Amid the vast sea of humanity, loneliness and exploration coexist. Life philosophy, like a lighthouse in the dark, guides us in seeking the deepest mysteries of life. Let us unveil this mysterious veil and embark on this journey of profound contemplation together.
1. We are just a grain of dust in this universe, no different from an ant, an insect, or a mosquito. Giving our all does not equate to being outstanding, and indulging in food, drink, and entertainment does not mean wasting time. Life does not have a set goal to achieve or a distant destination to reach. Do as much as one's abilities allow and eat as much as one's appetite demands. Leading a plain, quiet life for a lifetime is also a kind of blessing.
2. Where crowds gather, people are typically engaged in three things: indirectly boasting about themselves, embellishing to belittle others, and whispering malicious rumors among themselves.
3. Among all things in the world, humans are the greatest mystery, and in the hearts of humans, eternity is the greatest mystery. It unfolds a vast field of exploration into the meaning of life, including birth and death, love and loneliness, nature and life, truth, beauty, and so on. All these are forms and experiences of communication and connection between humans and eternity. Humans are the only animals capable of questioning the meaning of their own existence, which is both the greatness and the tragic aspect of humans. Because there is no definitive standard for meaning, the value lies not in the meaning itself, but in the pursuit of it.
4. An excellent soul, even if forever lonely and forever misunderstood, can still find a sense of fulfillment in its own richness, and in a certain sense, it is self-sufficient.
5. Whether my life is plain or whether the path ahead is fraught with difficulties and obstacles, I will joyfully accept them. I will surely strive to experience the fullness and joy of that existence of vitality!
6. Happiness is hidden in the future, leading us to seek it, but when we hurry past, we find that happiness can only be found in memory. Is happiness really so difficult to attain? Or are we generally adept at letting go? Cherish the happiness around us, which is the greatest wealth we possess. The alternation of happiness and suffering is an indispensable part of our journey! No matter how easy or difficult my path ahead may be, I will strive to experience that fulfillment where happiness and suffering coexist!
7. The vast majority of people go through three stages in life. The first stage is when one believes they are the center of the world. The second stage is when, no matter how hard one struggles, one feels powerless. The third stage is when one finally accepts their own ordinariness and enjoys it.
8. The greatness of Tolstoy lies in his extraordinary simplicity and authenticity. After reading "The Most Beautiful Tomb in the World," I feel even more that his simplicity is what I aspire to, and I like the feeling of that simplicity. I don't like too much arguing; I prefer a peaceful life. Rather than wasting time arguing, it would be better to use that time to seek the truth.
9. Life is just a series of experiences. In the end, we all turn to dust and ashes. Why worry about gains and losses, or become obsessed with things outside of ourselves? Just live carefree as you wish, and enjoy life as you wish. What's the matter if you haven't achieved much, or if you feel lonely? As long as you don't suffer, and live a leisurely and carefree life, that is the most beautiful existence.
10. In spring, the warm air begins to embrace you, and the branches that are beginning to bud stretch endlessly into the vast sky. The willow catkins fluttering in the wind appear hazy and leisurely in the sunlight. The plan for the year lies in spring. You may be busy setting various goals to enrich your life, but do you know that a life cut off from nature is filled with loneliness and solitude? That is the loneliness and solitude that the heart cannot release in the natural life.
11. Mr. Zhou Guoping expressed his understanding and views of nature and life, as well as their relationship, through plain and simple narration. Although it is only a few paragraphs, it is enough to shake my soul and make me involuntarily reflect on my previous life. People long for simplicity, not because they truly like this somewhat boring life, nor do they reject a life of great drama. On the contrary, it is precisely because people yearn for a life filled with wonders that they develop fears of not obtaining it and fear of having to pay a huge price for it. So why not accept simplicity? At least, this way, there will be no so-called failure.
12. However, these pains are not unbearable, why not smile after enduring them? If you look closely, happiness is truly everywhere. The warmth brought by hot water on the table after braving the cold to return home, the joy of sitting together with classmates to contribute to our class, the happiness of chatting together after family reunions, and the smiles of everyone around me, aren't all these a form of happiness? I no longer yearn for more happiness, for I already possess much; and I no longer detest pain too much, for happiness will fill this void...
13. "Man and Eternity" is Zhou Guoping's spontaneous jotting down of his thoughts on everyday life. This is one of his early books, in which he scribbled his inner musings while studying Nietzsche. The writing style is free and the words simple. Upon careful contemplation, it feels profound. The wonderful arrangement and combination of the words emit such a pungent and refreshing essence of life's truth, just as "the philosopher lives in eternity, the poet in the moment, and neither grows old." I prefer philosophers who write in the form of essays, proverbs, notebooks, etc., and I enjoy wandering in the realm of philosophical prose. There is less dogmatic argumentation and didacticism here, with more simplicity and nature, more intuition and insight. There is no Procrustes' bed here; there is no need to elongate or shorten the feeling and thought for the sake of the system.
14. Master Nan Huairen once said, "If one can have a period of tranquil and effortless time in life, it is also a great blessing. And if a person chooses a simple life, as light as water, it is even more likely to approach the true essence of tranquil and effortless living, because there is no chaos of musical instruments in the ears, no exhaustion from writing documents, and what one has is the flowing and winding of time as smooth as water."
15. Young people have nothing to reminisce about, so they look forward. The elderly have nothing to look forward to, so they reminisce.
16. The greatness of Tolstoy lies in his extraordinary simplicity and authenticity. The plainness that is reflected in his "The Most Beautiful Cemetery in the World" is exactly what I aspire to, and I like the feeling of this plainness. I don't like too much bickering, I prefer a peaceful life, and instead of wasting time arguing, I would rather spend that time seeking the truth during arguments.
17. What is the meaning of life?
18. "Suffering and joy are the self-enjoyment of vitality. The most tragic thing about vitality is its weakness, devoid of both joy and suffering." In my view, being integrated into life is to incorporate the life of nature into the life of humans, and the life of humans is a synthesis that must embrace both suffering and joy. The cycle of the four seasons constitutes life; humans do not have eternal life, but they can contemplate life and take the lead in it. As Zhou Guoping said, "When I feel that my limbs and veins are filled with fresh and vigorous vitality, I truly believe that at this moment, I am the happiest person in the world."
19. People who enjoy solitude prefer environments that are free from noise, a feeling like a still heart. Because only then can they become more calm. They are not really reclusive; they also often gather with friends to chat and have a good time, but that is just occasionally, and most of the time, they still prefer quietness.
20. "Man and Eternity" is a collection of casual thoughts on life written by Zhou Guoping, but to my utmost surprise, the clever arrangement and combination of words have actually permeated such astonishing life philosophies.
21. To entrust the mayfly to the heavens and the earth, to be a mere grain of sand in the boundless sea. To mourn the fleeting nature of my life, and to envy the endless flow of the Yangtze River.
22. When you've endured a time when you're the only one to drink tea, walk alone, shop by yourself, travel alone, read, sing, with no phone calls, no invitations, no gatherings, no social engagements, no distractions from the complexities of social interactions, and you also don't want to disturb anyone else, without entanglements of interpersonal relationships, and you don't want to mingle in crowds, go to bed early and wake up early, exercise your body, please yourself, lead a regular life, don't pursue any material possessions beyond yourself, don't worry about gain or loss, be natural in the world of others, and be self-cultivated in your own world, then you have already reached the highest realm of life.
23. I may not possess the wisdom of Mr. Zhou Guoping, but I still strive to comprehend life and ponder on the meaning of life. This is the greatest benefit this book has brought to me.
24. The word "life" has been pursued by countless people. However, it has always been shrouded in a veil of mystery. Different people's understanding of life will draw different masks for him. And the face that is now in front of your eyes is telling you: "Suffering and joy are the self-enjoyment of vitality. The most tragic thing is the weakness of vitality, with neither joy nor suffering. When I feel that my limbs and blood vessels are full of fresh, vibrant life, I truly believe that at this moment, I am the happiest person in the world!"
25. From birth to death, the starting point and endpoint for humans are the same. People will encounter different landscapes along the way, but their emotions are mostly similar: joy and sorrow. The difference in intensity lies only in the distinction between the two, thus forming two types of people: optimists and pessimists. For us young people, both ends of life and death are far away, and we cannot feel the sacredness of life's beginning nor the fear of death's verdict. We are just walking, searching and walking all the way, "life" continues under our feet, "meaning" may be in our hearts, in our footprints, but we have always been unable to find it. But I always believe that self-awareness and spiritual grade are enough.
26. Humans are the only creatures capable of questioning the meaning of their own existence, which is both the greatness and the tragic aspect of humanity. Since there is no definitive standard for meaning, the value lies not in the meaning itself but in the pursuit of it! Life and death, love and solitude, nature and life, truth, beauty, and so on, are the eternal pursuits of human beings. "Man and Eternity" uses the wonderful arrangement and combination of words to permeate such profound truths about life.
27. Happiness is something that everyone initially believes they can attain, yet no one dares to claim that they have truly possessed it.
28. I remember there were many topics in the book, but the one that left the deepest impression on me was still about love.
29. People say that the value of impromptu remarks lies in their authenticity and the precision of their language, like pearls on a string, yet with a profound sense of expression. In this sense, Zhou Guoping's impromptu remarks are always characterized by their simplicity and sophistication, their straightforwardness and expressiveness, displaying a delicate beauty. There are no difficult terms in this book; instead, it is written in very accessible language, allowing us to read it easily and leave us with endless thoughts.
30. Solitude is the best kind of spiritual practice in life. Only those who can enjoy solitude are able to observe the world with a broader perspective and use a longer-term vision to judge the people and things around them. Enjoying solitude will also lead to a more vibrant life.
31. "Do not judge life by success or failure, nor love by success or failure." In the world of love, there is no right or wrong between any two people. Even if, in the end, the two go their separate ways and part ways, that is not a failure of love. To have loved, to have existed, that is the most beautiful thing. Even if there are only memories left, they are still worth cherishing.
32. Some say that from the perspective of ancient times, humans are inherently social animals, and once separated from the group, an individual's strength is truly limited. Moreover, they become more lonely. However, it is precisely because the world is too noisy that people always need a world of their own, a state of solitude, to find the most authentic version of themselves.
33. To me, both ends of life and death are remote, beyond the reach of feeling the sanctity of life's beginning or the terror of death's judgment. I am just walking, searching and proceeding along the way, and the end is nothing but a termination, yet I continue to seek, in search of the happiness that belongs to me in life. Of course, I sometimes get lost and knock on the door of the house of pain. In my senior year of high school, I would burst into an unspoken anger late at night, hating the urging of time and the scrutiny of the college entrance examination. I would worry for a week because of a poor exam score. I would complain about having to go to school early in the morning, feeling drowsy and braving the cold.
34. A self-sufficient person in spirit will not envy others' good luck, especially not the good luck of the intellectually challenged.
35. The greatness of the author lies in his simplicity. After reading "Man and Eternity," I feel even more that his simplicity is what I aspire to pursue; everyone would appreciate such a simple and unadorned feeling. I have always longed for a tranquil and peaceful life, not needing too much joy, nor too much pain; I have always feared encountering difficulties and obstacles, fearing the ups and downs, the tumultuous sea that would engulf me completely. It was after reading "Man and Eternity" that I realized the most tragic thing in life is not the loss of something, but that vitality can be so weak!
36. "Man and Eternity" is one of Zhou Guoping's representative works, in which he expounds on his lifelong concerns and reflections on life issues in the form of essays and short phrases, covering a variety of topics such as humanity, nature and life, love, loneliness, happiness and suffering, time, and eternity, with profound and incisive content. The chapter "Nature and Life" not only brings a breath of fresh air to me who is dealing with the earth, but also makes me start to contemplate the meaning of life's existence.
37. All external deficiencies or losses, including reputation, status, property, etc., as long as they do not affect basic survival, should not bring pain in essence. If they do, it's only because you care; the more you care, the more pain you will experience. As long as you don't care, nothing can harm you.
38. The title of the entire book is derived from the combination of the last title of the first topic and the last title of the book. Among all things in the world, humans are the greatest mystery. In the hearts of humans, eternity is the greatest mystery. The endless mysteries of life between the poles present a vast field for the exploration of the meaning of life. Birth and death, love and loneliness, reality, beauty, philosophy and art, writing, genius, women and men, all are forms and experiences of communication between humans and eternity. Or perhaps it is these beautiful and simple thoughts that have allowed me to have a deeper reflection and repositioning of human nature and life. It has made my worldview, outlook on life, and values more perfect and improved through continuous exploration and learning. Perhaps for me, this is already quite satisfying, and this is also the more appropriate reason why I deeply love this book and greatly appreciate the author's thoughts.
39. "Loving someone is about caring for them... Every normal person has both the need to care for others and to be cared for. Amidst this boundless universe, who isn't longing to be cherished like an orphan..." I particularly like this passage. Everyone has their own vulnerable side, and no one can remain strong forever. We all need to be cherished, to feel the care and protection from others, we are just ordinary people...
40. I am naturally not suited for socializing. In most situations, I either find the other person boring or fear that they might find me boring. Yet, I am not willing to endure the other person's boredom, nor am I willing to go to the trouble of appearing interesting, as both are too tiring. I find solitude to be the most relaxing, because I don't feel boring in my own company, and even if I do, it's something I bear myself, not something that burdens others or makes me feel uneasy.
41. Vulgar people fill their emptiness in the midst of hustle and bustle, while formidable people perfect themselves in solitude.
42. "The wise man mocks happiness as a dream, while the fool seeks happiness in the dream. Both deny the existence of happiness in reality. It seems that one must not be too wise nor too foolish to attain real happiness. People call this state between wisdom and foolishness the wisdom of life."
