Through Challenges, Forging an Endless River — Every bitter experience is a step on the ladder to success.

1. John Williams once told his graduate students studying writing, "Writers can't be taught; you have to find the knack for writing yourself." He then stacked a pile of books as tall as a person for the students to study carefully, including Henry James' "Daisy Miller" and "The Portrait of a Lady," Edith Wharton's "House of欢乐" and "The Age of Innocence," and so on. It is self-evident that he was deeply influenced by classic literature and inherited their excellent qualities; after writing, his works were exceptional.

2. [1] During the low point, gather strength.

3. 【3】All the suffering is part of the growth process.

4. Alternatively, the Creator may never have been aware of humanity's existence, allowing your existence without conscious neglect. However, since ancient times, humans have considered Earth as the center of the universe, and naturally instinctively refuse to acknowledge such a cruel ancient lesson. The young man, Andrew, is no exception: "... seeing the bison, once proud, noble, and full of dignity, suddenly becoming a lifeless mass of flesh, rigid and at the mercy of others. The original image of the bison was stripped away, or perhaps the image he imagined was stripped away, and it was bizarrely and mockingly swaying in front of him. He was extremely shocked, felt nausea, and fled." From the fate of the bison, which was arbitrarily slaughtered, and all the subsequent experiences, he associated his own irresistible powerlessness, and he was constantly lingering on the bed of the woman, Francine.

5. God closes a door for you while opening a window. There is opportunity in danger, and a way out in adversity. All the suffering is part of growth. Endure it, step through, climb up, walk out, and a brilliant future awaits your embrace.

6. Song Jiang, burdened with a murder charge, fled into the江湖, his prospects destroyed and his relatives scattered. But he did not collapse under the heavy blows of fate. Instead, he made friends with heroes along the way, showed generosity, and won the hearts of people. Later, he was sentenced to death in Jiangzhou, and a group of heroes stormed the execution ground. The Liangshan Uprising made its presence felt throughout the land.

7. Mr. Zhu Guangqian said: "Not all first-rate novelists are good at storytelling; most stories in first-rate novels are like flower racks made of withered trees, their purpose being merely to support a garden full of colorful, vibrant vines and flowers. What lies beyond these stories is the poetry within the novel. To read a novel and see only the story without its poetry is like looking at a flower rack and forgetting the flowers on it." Therefore, what needs to be done next is to constantly add branches and leaves, seamlessly integrating details and themes into the work, in order to delight the reader's senses and express the author's intention in writing this book. This is the "fleshy" richness of the work.

8. Of course, the meticulous arrangement of these details by the director or author is not without purpose, and it is not merely to please the senses of the audience and readers. One might ask, does it imply something else? It certainly does imply something, and the entire story symbolizes something even more profound. Everything depends on what you understand from it. The framework and details of the novel, the "withered tree constructed into a flower架子," and the "garden full of colorful, vibrant ivy flowers" all aim for the creator's theme, all in the pursuit of realizing the intention of creating this work. Some people may simply view "The Butcher's Crossroad" as a Western novel filled with a sense of failure, but I believe it is deeper, or much deeper, and is a richly symbolic allegorical poem. It indeed deserves to be deeply interpreted.

9. Falling into a low point is indeed unfortunate. But as long as you do not give up and strive forward, every direction is a step forward, every climb is upward, and every effort will be worthwhile.

10. The journey of life is long and winding; when smooth, one moves with ease and composure; when rugged, one is proactive and confident. Fear not hardship, fear not difficulties, for all thorns are trials, and all sufferings are growth!

11. But that's not all. Excellent works have a unique style, inherently possessing a vitality that resists being categorized into any specific genre of fiction. They often serve as allegories rich in symbolism and full of meaning, symbolizing the universe's oldest enmity towards humanity.

12. Therefore, he resolutely returned to the fierce wilderness, embracing the true existence of nature. He left behind a growth allegory poem about self-actualization, the understanding of the universe, and destiny for the world.

13. There is no free suffering in the world, no free path taken, no free suffering endured. Fate always seems to compensate you unexpectedly.

14. Standing atop the ruins of loneliness, despair, and failure, laugh at the low point, look down on the heavens, and bite down to climb the slope. Perseverance can endure and break through, and destiny will always have a turning point.

15. "Oedipus" carries a strong sense of fatalism, where the protagonist, Oedipus, despite his efforts, cannot avoid the tragic outcome of "killing his father and marrying his mother." Similarly, since the planning of the western journey began with Andrew, readers have been anticipating his failure. There are various ways for him to fail, but the author chose to let him experience a false sense of joy before coming to naught. This is the "oldest enmity of the universe or destiny towards humans."

16. The sea has high and low tides, mountains have high and low valleys, and life also has bright moments and the darkest times. When the hand of fate pushes you to endure the煎熬 of pain, if you persevere through it, spring will come and flowers will bloom. The ordeal is a trial, and once you overcome it, it is growth, a transformation, and you will welcome a new self.

17. The author tells us step by step that this is a story of youthful growth, where the protagonist experiences challenges and trials, and all his sufferings and insights have symbolic meanings. The entire novel is about Andrews' growth, transformation, hardships, baptism, and rebirth, constantly writing about his survival after disasters. Before setting off, the woman Francine says to him, "I like your softness, while you are still soft... Yes, you will return, but you will be a different person. You will no longer be so young, you will be like others. The wind and the sun will make your face rough, and your hands will no longer be soft." Due to long hours of horse riding, his hands and buttocks got blisters and calluses, and then they became numb and no longer felt pain; the first time he peeled the wild牛皮, he was submerged in a belly full of cow intestines, resulting in his entire body being covered in blood, and then he jumped into the river to wash himself clean; when the blizzard came, he hid in the protective shell made of wild牛皮 to survive, buried under the snow for several days and nights, and finally broke through the snow. Symbolically speaking, he has undergone the baptism of blood, water, and snow, washed away the tender chrysalis from his body, "reborn from the flames" as a caterpillar, and ultimately realized himself. This is the entire process of "phoenix rebirth." Like "Stoner," this is an allegory about self-realization.

18. "The greatest pain in life is waking up with no way to go. Those who dream are blessed; if one has not yet seen a path to take, the most important thing is not to wake him." If Andrews had not yet embarked on the journey of self-discovery, and was still that naive young man living in the illusion of the city, he could have comfortably built dreams, musical dreams, academic dreams, within the ruins of human civilization. But he woke up, resolutely choosing to pierce through the illusion of survival and confront the powerlessness of humans in the world.

19. From "Stoners" to "The Cross of Snow," the reader's perspective extends from college life to the vast wilderness of the West. You'll find that writer John Williams often, whether intentionally or not, treads on the edge of novel categories, and careless readers are quick to label his works with genre tags. Throughout his life, he has written three excellent novels, and some believe that each one belongs to a specific genre—the Western novel "The Cross of Snow."

20. By removing the detailed descriptions and revealing the skeletal structure of the novel, you will find that the themes and essences of many literary works are interconnected: A young knight embarks on a perilous journey, enduring hardships and dangers in pursuit of the legendary "Grail," only to discover that the "Grail" does not exist in the world at all. In another version: A naive Hobbit sets out on the arduous journey of escorting the Ring, waging both intellect and courage against the Ringwraiths and his own inner demons, and finally delivers the Ring to the fiery熔岩 in the magical city to be destroyed. In yet another version: A Harvard student ventures into the unfamiliar wilderness, enduring scorching sun, thirst, blizzards, and other hardships on his way to the Colorado Mountains to hunt bison, finally returning richly laden, only to find that the hides on his full cart are washed away clean by the river. This is what Thomas Foster refers to as the "Quest Novel."

21. Lincoln repeatedly failed in his quest to become a member of Congress and was mocked. He endured the embarrassment and pain, continuously summed up his experiences, improved himself, and gained the ability to govern. In the end, he overcame obstacles and was elected as President.

22. On the path of establishing New Oriental, he has fallen into低谷 several times, but he has always endured the blows and tortures, slowly enduring and persisting in walking on, believing that sunshine always follows the storm.

23. Self-actualization is the process of continuously seeking and confirming one's existence in nature or the universe. Only when you have stood firm in your position can you understand the external world. How do humans seek their existence? You must reflect on yourself through external objects. Therefore, people look in the mirror to know the beauty and ugliness of their own appearance; believers understand the insignificance of humans through religious faith; young people choose to travel far and explore the outside world. So, after our Andrew achieves self-awareness, what does he truly understand?

24. Zeng Guofan said: "Nurture a heart full of spring, support two roots of poverty. During the low period of life, maintain an ideal of thriving, and accumulate the forward momentum from the soles of your feet. Leap out, and step onto a better landscape."

25. The conceited human race is eager to try to change something, while the universe stands calmly and calmly in front of the tiny human beings, happily eliminating all your "doings," just not to your liking. There is a very thought-provoking scene in the text: when the hunter Miller insists on slaughtering the last herd of wild buffaloes in the valley, they launched an attack, and then a sudden blizzard buried the valley recklessly. This brings to mind the writing style of poetry: poets are accustomed to placing things, objects, and principles in parallel columns, hoping to achieve the same effect or even enhance it. When humans are delusional about being able to control the lives and deaths in others' worlds, the Creator casually flips them all to the brink of death. In the original text, someone asked Andrew: "Look at Miller, he knows this land well and firmly believes that his ideas are all correct, but what is the use in the end? And Charlie Hogue with his Bible and whiskey. Can those things make your winter better? Or save your leather? And Schneider, is that his name? Even the name is not his. When he leaves this world, the name cannot be taken with him."

26. 【2】When climbing hills,

27. Throughout history, excellent works in various forms such as epics, novels, dramas, and poetry have expressed diverse themes, ranging from lush greenery to withered redness. Some are towering trees like "The Divine Comedy," "The Iliad," and "Paradise Lost," which not only shelter countless subsequent literary works but also profoundly influence human understanding of the cosmos and history. Others are small trees in the forest, like "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" and "The Picture of Dorian Gray," akin to trickling streams that may not concern grand purposes but tirelessly explore the human heart, achieving self-awareness. "Crossing to Bear" belongs to the latter category, fully equipped with the two characteristics of excellent works: "clear structure and lush branches." Structure, rhythm, language, theme, and character creation—you can hardly find any major flaws in John Williams' novels.

28. Why is it necessary to differentiate between "stated" and "true" reasons for going to the destination? Because Andrews himself is also unaware of what he truly seeks. Of course, hunting bison in the Colorado mountainous area is the most straightforward and superficial explanation given in the book. Going further, Andrews is drawn to the wilderness and desires to connect more deeply with the legendary Western nature. "What does he want to say to Mr. MacDonald? It's a feeling, an irresistible urge to express. But whatever he says, he knows it's just a synonym for the vast wilderness he has been so desperately seeking." If it were just like that, then John Williams wouldn't be John Williams. What Andrews is desperately seeking is himself.

29. In times of低谷, do not lie down and lose heart. Hold onto the belief in success, gather the strength for a breakthrough, and wait for the right moment to break the deadlock. Like a dragon confined to the beach waiting for the tide, or a tiger storing its strength to break free from the cage, as long as one does not give up, the tide of fortune will always turn in one's favor.

30. Only those who have undergone the refining of hell possess the power to create heaven. Only fingers that have bled can play the most beautiful and profound melody in the world.

31. Pak Geun-hye lived her childhood in the shadow of her father's assassination and lost her mother at an early age, leaving her without any support. However, the unfriendly environment also shaped her independent, strong, and stubborn character, making her more mature and wise than her peers, which later led her to become South Korea's first female president.

32. When it comes to details, Williams' scene descriptions are full of imagery: "They set up their tents by a small spring that sparkles in the fading light of the sunset. A gentle stream flows over smooth stones and into a small pool at the bottom of the mountain, overflowing and turning into a narrow stream, hidden in the lush grass of the valley." Such beautiful words are scattered throughout the book, reminding you of Tolstoy's series of works on the Caucasus Mountains, or recalling the stark lyrical expressions of Ang Lee's** work between light and shadow: In "The Wedding Banquet," the parents arrive in the United States to find Wei Tong, and in the backyard, the warm afternoons are interwoven with light and shadow, gently resting on them, serene yet warm; in "Brokeback Mountain," Ennis watches Jack riding a horse on the mountainside from afar, the sun spreading over there,** not explaining to the audience what it means, but letting the image unfold before you. The narrative lacks dramatic twists and turns, and many details subtly express a sentiment, yet it inadvertently builds a full-hearted lyricism.

33. Thomas Foster proposes a stunning statement in "How to Read a Literary Book" (translated in Taiwan as "27 Lessons to Teach You How to Understand Literature"): "Every journey is a pursuit (of course, there are exceptions to everything)."

34. The framework of "The Butcher's Crossing" is simple and clear: "What would happen to a young man from Harvard, brimming with Emersonian ideals, if he saw true nature in the West? This is the starting point of this novel (i.e., 'The Butcher's Crossing')." The author said so. With the help of the hunter Miller, the剥皮高手Schneider, and Charlie Hog, the Harvard student Andrews finally set out on his desired wilderness journey. The four set off from The Butcher's Crossing, heading west through the prairie and into the Colorado mountain range to hunt bison, but were blocked by heavy snow. The following spring, they returned laden with spoils, but all the bison hides were swept away in a flood during their journey, and they also lost their companion Schneider. This is merely a newly constructed novel structure, stable and strong, with a strong "skeletal" feel.

35. Which immortal does not undergo tribulation, and which achievement does not come with suffering? In the vast ocean of life, all pain is part of growth. Every life has its own reason for being strong.

36. Yu Minhong was a rural child, who was at a loss for both of his college entrance examinations. However, he was unwilling to return to the land and live a life of seclusion like his parents. With more diligence and perseverance in his studies, he finally opened the door to Peking University during his third college entrance examination.

37. After struggling to reach the peak of the industry with New Oriental, the company suffered a cliff-diving loss due to policy adjustments and the transformation of the education market. Yu Minhong did not give up and led the team to develop new businesses, shifting to agricultural product live streaming.

38. After twenty centuries of human changes, the ancient Greek tragedy "Oedipus Rex" remains evergreen and constantly triggers a strong sense of resonance in readers. In contrast, the political satire in Aristophanes' comedies is so obscure that it is almost unreadable without annotation. Even if one勉强 understands the content of the annotations, the thoughts conveyed by the playwright still seem distant. In Chinese folklore, it is the stories of牛郎织女 (Niulang and Zhinu), 白蛇传说 (The Legend of the White Snake), (Meng Jiangnu's Tears at the Great Wall), (Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai) that are the most widely spread and legendary. So why do tragedies tend to last longer than comedies? Because the content explored in tragedies often delves into the most essential human condition: the powerlessness and helplessness of human souls in the face of destiny.

39. Through hardship and adversity comes your success. All success is inseparable from the perseverance through pain, especially during the critical periods of life and career. If one gives up, all the previous efforts will be wasted, and it will be a fruitless endeavor.
