穷则独善其身,死则安息无恸。在这纷扰尘世,唯愿心灵如水,澄澈宁静。

If one is poor, he should cultivate his own virtue; when he dies, he should rest in peace without any sorrow. In this turbulent world, may my soul be as clear and tranquil as water.

1. 夫人必自侮,然后人侮之;家必自毁,而后人毁之;国必自伐,而后人伐之。

1. A woman must first humiliate herself before others can humiliate her; a household must first destroy itself before others can destroy it; a nation must first boast before others can attack it.

2. 人有不为也,而后可以有为。人要有所不为,才能有所为。

2. There are things that people should not do, and only after not doing them can they have the ability to do things. People must refrain from certain actions in order to be able to accomplish others.

3. 有恒产者有恒心,无恒产者无恒心。苟无恒心,放辟邪侈,无不为已。

3. Those who own a stable property have a steadfast will, while those without a stable property lack a steadfast will. If one lacks a steadfast will, they will indulge in licentiousness and extravagance, doing whatever comes to mind.

To beckon from a high place, the arm is not actually longer, but those who see it are far away; to shout with the wind, the voice is not actually louder, but those who hear it are more prominent. Those who borrow a carriage and horse are not necessarily swift of foot, yet they can travel a thousand miles; those who borrow a boat and oar are not necessarily good swimmers, yet they can cross rivers and great waters. The essence of a gentleman's life is not different, as long as he knows how to make good use of external things.

A straight piece of wood conforms to the cord, and when it is turned into a wheel, its curvature is regular; even if it is dried and beaten, it does not return to its original straightness, for it is the turning that makes it so. Therefore, when wood is aligned with the cord, it becomes straight; when metal is sharpened on the whetstone, it becomes sharp. A gentleman, with extensive learning and daily self-examination, will have knowledge that is clear and actions that are without fault.

Therefore, if one does not climb high mountains, one does not know the height of the sky; if one does not stand by deep valleys, one does not know the depth of the earth; if one does not hear the words left by the ancient kings, one does not know the breadth of learning. The children of the Ganyue, Yi, and Mo people, are born with the same voice but grow up with different customs, which is due to education. The Book of Songs says: "Oh, you noble ones, do not constantly seek rest. Settle in your position, and prefer righteousness. The gods will hear you, and grant you prosperity." The greatest power of the gods is to embody the way, and the longest blessing is to be free from disasters.

A gentleman is easy to make friends with but difficult to seduce; he is prone to fear but hard to coerce; he fears misfortune but does not shrink from sacrificing for justice; he desires gain but does not do what he considers wrong; he has close friendships but does not conspire; he is eloquent in speech but does not indulge in empty rhetoric. How vast is his heart! He is different from the world.

43. 君子说:学习是不可以停止的。靛青,是从蓝草中提取的,却比蓝草的颜色还要青;冰,是水凝固而成的,却比水还要寒冷。木材笔直,合乎墨线,(如果)它把烤弯煨成车轮,(那么)木材的弯度(就)合乎圆的标准了,即使再干枯了,(木材)也不会再挺直,是因为经过加工,使它成为这样的。所以木材经过墨线量过就能取直,刀剑等金属制品在磨刀石上磨过就能变得锋利,君子广泛地学习,而且每天检查反省自己,那么他就会聪明多智,而行为就不会有过错了。

43. The gentleman says: Learning should never stop. Indigo, extracted from indigo plants, is even bluer than the plants themselves; ice, formed from water, is even colder than water. Wood that is straight and conforms to the ink line—(if) it is baked and curved into a wheel, (then) the curvature of the wood conforms to the standard of a circle. Even if it dries out, it will not become straight again, because it has been processed to become that way. Therefore, wood that has been measured with the ink line can be made straight, and metal products like swords and daggers that have been sharpened on a whetstone can become sharp. A gentleman who learns extensively and examines and reflects on himself every day will become wise and intelligent, and his actions will not be wrong.

47. No one can decide the length of their own life. Life is too unpredictable. We may encounter accidents at any time and in any place, and we may suddenly develop symptoms that are later diagnosed as severe or even catastrophic diseases. Or, to put it another way, no one knows whether tomorrow or an accident will come first.

48. 三里之城,七里之郭,环而攻之而不胜。夫环而攻之,必有得天时者矣,然而不胜者,是天时不如地利也。

When a city is surrounded and attacked, it must have an advantage in the celestial timing. However, the fact that it was not conquered indicates that the celestial timing was not as favorable as the geographical advantage.

50. 积土成山,风雨兴焉;积水成渊,蛟龙生焉;积善成德,而神明自得,圣心备焉。故不积跬步,无以至千里;不积小流,无以成江海。骐骥一跃,不能十步;驽马十驾,功在不舍。锲而舍之,朽木不折;锲而不舍,金石可镂。蚓无爪牙之利,筋骨之强,上食埃土,下饮黄泉,用心一也。蟹八跪而二螯,非蛇鳝之穴无可寄托者,用心躁也。是故无冥冥之志者,无昭昭之明;无惛惛之事者,无赫赫之功。行衢道者不至,事两君者不容。目不能两视而明,耳不能两听而聪。螣蛇无足而飞,鼫鼠五技而穷。《诗》曰:“尸鸠在桑,其子七兮。淑人君子,其仪一兮。其仪一兮,心如结兮!”故君子结于一也。

Accumulated earth becomes a mountain, and with the rise of wind and rain, so does its formation; accumulated water becomes a deep pool, and from it, the dragon is born; accumulated good deeds become virtue, and the divine and bright spirit is naturally acquired, with the sacred heart being fully prepared. Therefore, without accumulating every small step, one cannot reach a thousand miles; without accumulating the tiny streams, one cannot form rivers and seas. A spirited horse can leap just a few steps; a slow horse can travel ten miles, its success lies in not giving up. If one carves and gives up, even rotten wood cannot be broken; but if one carves and does not give up, gold and stone can be carved. The worm has no sharp claws or strong bones, it feeds on dust at the top and drinks from the underworld beneath, all due to its single-minded focus. The crab, with its eight legs and two claws, can find no place to rely on except in the holes of snakes and eels, all because of its restless mind. Therefore, without a resolute and determined will, one cannot have a brilliant and clear understanding; without diligence and perseverance, one cannot achieve great achievements. One who walks a crossroads will not reach his destination, and one who serves two lords will not be tolerated. The eyes cannot see two things at once and remain clear, nor can the ears hear two sounds at once and be sharp. The flying snake has no legs but can soar, and the mole has five skills but is limited. The Book of Songs says: "The magpie perches on the mulberry tree, with seven chicks. The noble and upright person, their demeanor is unified. Their demeanor is unified, their heart is firm!" Thus, the gentleman focuses and unifies their thoughts.

51. 罗慧娟说,上帝藉着那些苦难,把我彻底地打碎,让我去寻求生命的意义到底是什麽。死并不可怕,最怕的是死了你不知道生命的意义为何。

51. Lao Huijuan said, "God completely shattered me through those sufferings, making me seek the true meaning of life. Death is not可怕的, the worst is when you die and you don't know why life has meaning."

61. I used to spend the whole day in contemplation, but the knowledge I learned in a moment is more; I used to stretch my neck to look far, but it is not as broad as the view from a high place. When I wave my hand from a high place, my arm is not longer than before, but others can see it from a distance; when I call with the wind, my voice is not louder than before, but the listeners can hear it clearly. Those who rely on horses and carriages are not necessarily those who can walk fast, but they can travel a thousand miles; those who rely on boats and ships are not necessarily good swimmers, but they can cross rivers. The nature of a gentleman is not much different from that of an ordinary person; it is just that gentlemen are good at utilizing external things.

62. 小病自我诊断,大病自我了断,生亦何欢,死亦何苦。祝我早亡,走得安详,切勿来生。人间再好,下辈子不来了。

62. Self-diagnose minor illnesses and end major ones by oneself; what joy in life, what sorrow in death. May I die young, go away in peace, and never come back in a future life. No matter how good the world is, I won't come back in the next life.

63. 自暴者,不可与有言也;自弃者,不可与有为也。

63. He who is self-destructive cannot be talked to; he who is self-abandoning cannot be worked with.
