When Su Dongpo was stationed in Guazhou, his residence was only a river away from the famous Jinqian Temple. The abbot of the temple was a realized monk, the Chan master Foyin. Su Dongpo often discussed Chan and Tao with the master, and after a long time, their relationship became very close, and their feelings were very deep, almost like bosom friends! Su Dongpo was talented and proud, and believed that he had gained insights from practicing Chan. He wrote a poem: "Kowtow to the heaven above, the radiance of the hair shines over the great universe, the eight winds do not move me, I sit calmly on the lotus of gold." The eight winds in the poem refer to the eight kinds of situations in life, such as praise, defamation, satire, etc. He proudly sent the poem across the river to Master Foyin with a page boy. After reading the master's letter, Su Dongpo was very angry. He thought the master would give him a high evaluation, but he never expected that the master's reply was the offensive "fart" word. Su Dongpo, a great talent of his time, couldn't bear such disdain and humiliation. With a heart full of anger, he immediately went up the mountain to argue with the master. But the Chan master Foyin laughed and welcomed him at the temple gate. Su Dongpo went forward to ask why the master had insulted him. The master still smiled and looked at Su Dongpo for a long time, then said, "Aren't you saying that the eight winds do not move you? How come a fart can cross the river?" After a long time, Su Dongpo suddenly realized! He was so ashamed he didn't know where to hide. Indeed, hadn't he felt that he had already achieved a mind like still water? How could a small test from the master withstand it? It was sheer arrogance! Alas! A mind like still water is meant to warn people that in the face of honor, defamation, joy and sorrow, riches and poverty, loss, twists and turns, hatred, and fame and fortune... one should remain "unperturbed by either praise or blame" and have a mind like a dry well!
