The Chan Master gave him a merit book and told him to do enough of three thousand good deeds. For every good deed he did, he should record it in the merit book. Once the three thousand good deeds were completed, his destiny would necessarily be adorned with flowers and brocade.

33. 在“大漠三部曲”的第一部《大漠祭》中，我主要写了老百姓的生存状态，同时也写了一种灵魂的东西；第二部《猎原》中，我更是重点关注老百姓的灵魂和信仰；第三部《白虎关》中，我则偏重于寻找产生这种灵魂与信仰的文化土壤。因为灵魂是文化的产物——我所说的“灵魂”，是一种精神，是一种人们从心底里坚信与坚守的东西——有什么样的文化就有什么样的灵魂，究竟是什么样的文化土壤造就了这样的灵魂？这就比单纯的写人物灵魂更深层了一些。只是这种关注，对作家的要求比较高，它要求作家必须站得很高、看得很远，而且必须拥有一种智慧。智慧和知识、聪明不一样，它更是一种心灵的东西，不是靠算计或者死记硬背得来的。这意味着作家必须放下自己，融入生活，去悟一些东西，不仅仅是体验，更需要感悟。作品最终是作家人格的反映，艺术手法反倒是一种手段而已。在这一点上，西部的好多作家——甚至中国的好多作家——中间，做到的并不多，只有很少数的几人，比如张承志，他就做到了。这不是恭维，我不认识张承志，也没有迷过他的作品，但我迷过他这个人，我更喜欢隐在他文字背后的那种作家的人格。这是最难得的东西，我认为他是中国最优秀的作家。

In the second novel, "The Hunting Plains," I focused even more on the souls and beliefs of the common people. In the third novel, "White Tiger Pass," I leaned towards exploring the cultural soil that gave rise to such souls and beliefs. Because the soul is a product of culture—the "soul" I am referring to is a spirit, something that people deeply believe in and hold on to at the core—different cultures produce different souls; what kind of cultural soil fosters such souls? This goes deeper than simply writing about the souls of characters. However, this kind of attention requires a high standard from writers, demanding that they stand on a high pedestal, look far ahead, and possess wisdom. Wisdom is different from knowledge and intelligence; it is more of a spiritual quality, not something that can be achieved through calculation or rote memorization. This means that writers must put aside their egos, immerse themselves in life, and understand certain things, not just through experience but through insight. The work is ultimately a reflection of the writer's character, while the artistic techniques are merely a means. On this point, many writers in the west—and even many Chinese writers—have not achieved much, with only a few, such as Zhang Chengzhi, having done so. This is not flattery; I do not know Zhang Chengzhi and have never been captivated by his works, but I have been captivated by the person he is. I prefer the writer's character hidden behind his words. This is the most rare thing, and I believe he is one of China's most outstanding writers.

39. After the publication of "The Sacrifice of the Great Desert," I went to Shanghai. Some editors there told me that they found me very confident. Indeed, that's the case. I have never cared about what the world has to say, but I write with great confidence what I want to write. Part of the reason I can do this is because I have the treasure trove of Liangzhou culture. I don't need any artistic processing, nor do I need to fabricate stories to cater to public tastes. As long as I present the vast culture of my hometown to the world, this world will be shocked.

40. 所以，一个作家要是不注重人格修炼，仅仅是在技巧上玩弄花样，无论他玩得多么出色，都掩饰不住人格的小气和卑琐。老百姓对这样的作家很反感，这就是现在的文学作品被冷落的真正原因。因此，我很少在技巧方面下功夫，我更关注老百姓的灵魂。我喜欢透过一些表面现象，挖掘一些深层的东西。比如，当这个世界关注着某种现象本身的时候，我询问的却是它为什么会这样，导致这种现象产生的深层原因是什么，它是否与人类灵魂深处的某种东西有关。我关注的不是一个现象或者它的结果，而是它为什么会出现，促使它诞生的土壤是什么。

Therefore, if a writer does not pay attention to the cultivation of personality but merely plays around with techniques, no matter how excellent his performance may be, it cannot hide his small-mindedness and meanness of character. The people are very反感 towards such writers, and this is the true reason why literary works are now being neglected. Therefore, I seldom put effort into technique, instead, I am more concerned about the souls of the people. I like to dig into something profound through superficial phenomena. For example, when this world is focused on a certain phenomenon itself, I ask why it is like this, what are the deep-seated reasons behind the phenomenon, and whether it is related to something deep within the human soul. What I am concerned about is not the phenomenon itself or its result, but why it appears and what kind of soil it has emerged from.
