In the torrent of fate, we may not be able to control everything, but we can choose to adapt to circumstances and be flexible in our approach.

1. Huali, most of the time, retreats to his home like a snail coiled up in its shell, reading and writing to while away the time.

2. On the contrary, some people prioritize their careers above all else, either tirelessly battling for months to write a long epic or striving for years to complete a scientific research project. When they work, they often forget to eat or sleep, forsaking day and night. It would be more accurate to say they are carelessly overextending their lives than to say they are betting on their health. Because the quality of one's health directly impacts the length of one's life. While Balzac was writing, he worked every day...

3. — Translation of "The Analects": Tell the facts, do not guess in the air; face issues without being arbitrary or capricious, and act only when feasible; be flexible in your actions, not rigid; do not make "I" the center of all things, do not be self-righteous, and work with the people around you to accomplish tasks together. Among three people walking, there must be someone I can learn from; I will follow their good qualities and correct their shortcomings.

4. "Excessive pride brings harm, while modesty brings benefit." — Shang Shu Translation: Being complacent about the achievements you have already made will invite loss and disaster; on the other hand, by being modest and always aware of one's own shortcomings, one can gain from it.

5. There is no need to search for such characters in books and newspapers, as they may very well be among us: they are in the prime of their youth, the affluent in life. Perhaps it is precisely because they are affluent that they do not take time seriously, or they may loaf around aimlessly, engage in idle chatter all day, play Mahjong all night, or dance and sing every night... When they really can't find anything to do with their time, they lie on their beds during the day, indulging in daydreams. When it comes to studying and learning, they are like what Lin Yutang先生's satirical poem says: "It's not the day for reading in spring, the summer is hot and perfect for sleeping, when summer goes, autumn comes, and winter arrives, pack up your schoolbag for the New Year." Or they may make grand promises: "I will definitely study hard next year." However, although they sound resolute and sincere, in reality, it's just "year after year." Some people cannot bear the slightest solitude, eagerly welcoming and sending others off, making friends and networking; some people follow the philosophy of "enjoying life as it comes," indulging in pleasures, seeking joy without end. The result of all this squandering of life is only to "turn white the hair of youth, to feel nothing but sadness." And the cause of this sadness, of course, is that after spending most of their lives, they have nothing to show for it.

6. When encountering evil people or bad things, it is as if touching boiling hot water; one should immediately leave and keep a great distance away. 4. If one is self-critical and less critical of others, then grievances will be kept at a distance.

7. In February, sell the new silk; in May, thresh the new grain. Treat the wound in front of your eyes, but scar the flesh in your heart. I wish the king's heart could become a bright candle, not lighting up the luxurious banquet, but illuminating the houses of the fugitives. Do not regret the fading of the fragrant flowers, for the summer trees, with their sun and shade, are just delightful. Build a power station on the tomb hill, and every household will have electric lights installed.

8. The beauty strides with pride, draped in luxurious silk, with a golden bell hanging around her neck and a jade ring hanging at her waist. Her delicate features, described as "a smile can captivate a hundred beauties, leaving the palace women in no color," have her hair cascading down her shoulders, truly embodying the essence of "crystal water revealing the lotus, nature without any embellishment." Listen to the night rain of Bashan pouring its grievances, the zither's palace music notes at midnight, and admire the exquisite red feathered robes.

9. — Translation of "The Zuo Commentary": Everyone is capable of making mistakes. If one makes a mistake in hunting, as long as it is corrected, one can still be the best person. Do not cover up a person's great virtues because of one minor fault.

10. — "The Analects" translation: A mean person is bound to cover up his own mistakes. To commit errors and not correct them is to truly commit an error.

11. As Bing Xin said, "If life is dull, I fear another life; if life is interesting, this life is enough." Therefore, we often remind ourselves not to cry over spilled milk, not to worry about falling leaves, and the only thing we can do is to grasp the present and cherish what we have. Because only in this way, when facing the past, we will not feel regret, and when facing the future, we can be at ease in our hearts.

12. Is it that time has buried your great aspirations, leaving only the endless melancholy of "The grand festival's name remains for eternity, but the world has lost the dew-dripping silk bag."

13. Interpretation: I advise you not to cherish the luxurious golden brocade robe, but I urge you to cherish your youth and youthfulness.

14. The power of encouragement is most evident when the encouraged person is in a困境, and adding material assistance to spiritual support can even more effectively help the encouraged person overcome difficulties, firmly move towards the established goals, and ultimately achieve success. Xu Beihong left his hometown for Shanghai in his youth to pursue his ambitions. However, due to his temporary inability to secure a job, he couldn't afford the hotel fees, and his luggage was seized by the hotel owner, who threw him out of the door. At a time of despondency and disappointment, Xu Beihong said goodbye to Mr. Huang Jingwan, who had once tried to help him find a job but failed, and went alone to the banks of the Huangpu River. While he was wandering by the river, Mr. Huang caught up with him, rushed to his back, and embraced him. Mr. Huang advised him not to lose heart or despair, and even more so not to resort to self-harm. He then took him to the dormitory of the Commercial Press and tried to find him a job. Mr. Huang highly appreciated Xu Beihong's artistic talent in painting, and later also recommended him to the silk merchant Huang Zhenzhi... 15. Even a small success can be a form of encouragement. Such encouragement often determines a person's choice of career. A writer said that he chose the path of literature because, when he was in junior high school, a city-level small newspaper published his short article and sent him a six-yuan稿费; a wealthy individual said that he chose to go into business because, in his early years, he used the pocket money given to him by his parents to buy some small toys, which he then sold to some children and easily earned eight yuan...

16. Chernyshevsky once said, "A person who lives well should divide his time into three parts: labor, leisure, and rest or entertainment." This Russian writer not only tells us how to live but also instructs us on how to spend our life.

17. The series of numbers on this bill surprised me greatly, and I secretly calculated a time account for myself. When I was young, I had experienced heavy drinking, and it was rare for me not to be drunk when gathering with others, and once drunk, I would sleep for several hours. Upon waking up, my brain was still foggy and dazed, and I couldn't engage in work normally. I calculated the time wasted by heavy drinking: at least 8 hours were spent on drinking and sleeping (the state of confusion upon waking up is not included), which amounts to one workday. If I drink 8 times a month, that's 96 workdays a year. If I've been drinking for 30 years, it would be 2,880 workdays. Fortunately, I later changed my environment and no longer immersed myself in alcohol, which reduced this completely unnecessary expenditure on my life's account. I am a smoker, and I calculated the time wasted by smoking: it takes about 5 minutes to smoke a cigarette, and I need to stop working or delay doing something because of smoking. I smoke a pack of cigarettes a day, which takes 100 minutes, amounting to 36,000 minutes a year, or 600 hours. If I do...

18. Not being able to sleep for two nights is not considered a disease. Mr. Liang Shiqiu said, "If one has fear in the heart, concerns in the heart, and desires in the heart, one can only toss and turn when lying down..." Conversely, if a person has neither fear nor concerns, and does not harbor enmity or desires, why would they not be able to fall soundly asleep? Those with a serene mind and open-heartedness rarely suffer from insomnia; whereas those who work hard all day, earning their own living, are even more adept at sleeping without any preference for the bed, and most of them have no idea what sleeping pills or tranquilizers are.

19. — Translation of The Spring and Autumn Annals: Doing too many bad things will eventually lead to self-destruction. Who among the 28 people does not make mistakes? To correct one's mistakes is the greatest virtue.

20. After a fresh rain in the empty mountains, the weather heralds the coming of autumn. Bright moonlight shines between the pines, clear springs flow over the stones. The bamboo grove echoes with washing women returning, the lotus leaves sway as fishing boats glide by. With spring flowers fading at will, the noble young man can linger here forever.

24. Some people are powerful, well-established, and extremely wealthy, surrounded by opulence and grandeur, but they live under the shackles of secular values, tirelessly exhausted, weary, and enduring great suffering.

25. There is a difference in the length of human life, but on average, there is a roughly fixed number. How we spend this fixed life span is something that should not be overlooked. It is certainly not advisable to waste or squander life carelessly, nor is it worth advocating to sacrifice health for the sake of a career and arbitrarily overdraw on life. I believe that spending a part of one's life for survival and for a career is necessary; spending a part of one's life for rest, entertainment, and physical fitness is also necessary. Because this part of the expenditure concerns our health, and health is the basic guarantee of life.

29. "Suddenly, as if a spring breeze had come overnight, trees and trees of pear blossoms have bloomed," my hair is not yet like the poem praising snow, reaching the extent of a blooming pear blossom. However, some of the pear blossoms have already begun to bloom, proudly displaying their grace against the dark backdrop. I have been amazed, disliked, and struggled, but the particular imagination that comes with my profession has already allowed me to foresee the outcome of this struggle. Therefore, I have adopted a natural attitude towards the appearance of this new color on my head -- knowing that the tide of black will inevitably be replaced by white, why not face it calmly! Just to face it calmly is a passive attitude, but in my view, gray hair is a striking notice, telling me that autumn of life has already arrived; gray hair is a silent alarm, warning me that my years are not abundant and my strength will be diminishing; gray hair is an epitaph on my temples, reminding me to strive and be diligent every time I look into the mirror. The words of the great Ouyang Wenzhong say, 'Although my hair has changed, my heart has not changed, let's raise the golden cup and listen to the old melody again.' I may not have a golden cup to hold, but a porcelain cup is also good for 'drinking wine, do not stop the cup.' As for the old melody, I not only enjoy listening to it again but also like to sing it, and when I sing the old melodies, I secretly take pleasure in the fact that although my hair has changed, my childlike heart remains the same.

34. Cherish the youth you possess, treat every day of life kindly, and you will cherish it without any regrets. Treasure the connections you have, hold onto every bit of love in your hands, and you will receive warmth. 39. The Red Flag Canal water flows into the fields, the rice seedlings grow lush and green. The lake's glow and autumn moon blend harmoniously, the pond surface windless, like a mirror not yet polished.

40. "Where this heart finds peace, that is my hometown," which is still taken as a self-description and self-comforting phrase by countless wanderers to this day. How many people who are "strangers in a foreign land" can find peace with whatever comes their way, so that no matter what kind of environment they are in, they can remain calm and composed. Only by being able to remain calm and composed can one have a peaceful mind, focusing solely on what one should or loves to do. During the War of Resistance Against Japan, Mr. Liang Shiqiu, who had lived in Beijing for many years and enjoyed a comfortable life, moved south to Chongqing to avoid the war, renting two small, dilapidated rooms in the suburbs. The desolation of these temporary dwellings was described by Mr. Liang in his article "Yaxue," not only because "there are windows without glass, so when the wind blows, it feels like a pavilion; there are tiles with gaps, so when it rains, it leaks like a dripping faucet," but also because at night, rats were rampant, and in summer, swarms of mosquitoes formed thunderstorms, yet this did not hinder Mr. Liang from living peacefully, contentedly, and focusing on writing his articles. He even named his works from this humble abode "The Little Essays of Yaxue." I dare not compare my scholarly talent with Mr. Liang, but if we talk about adapting to different situations, it seems worth mentioning. I have lived in Beijing for six years, moving seven times. Although for the last three and a half years, I rented a two-bedroom apartment that was still decent, for the first two and a half years, I lived in a 7-square-meter room and a dilapidated rural courtyard, and once had ghosts as neighbors (there were tombs in front and behind the house, and the graveyard was just dozens of meters away). But every time I moved into a "new home," I would have dreams while sleeping, but wake up without any worries. After arranging the necessary household items and organizing the daily杂物, I would set up my computer, read and write, or say, "start business." And the articles I wrote were either forceful and passionate, or humorous and relaxed, with both sharp criticism and poetic beauty, writing as I thought, without any restrictions. Why? Because my mind was not disturbed by the environment. "I have a table, a chair, and a bed, where I can sleep, write, and read, and that's all I need," which Mr. Liang said in "Yaxue," truly resonates with me.

42. 3 When seeing goodness, one fears not catching up; when seeing badness, one fears touching it. — From the Analects Translation: When one sees a good person, one fears not being able to learn from them in time; when one sees a good deed, one fears being too late to do it.

43. — Commentary on the Spring and Autumn Annals: When evaluating a person, one should not negate their achievements because of a single mistake. If someone can do something well in 30 attempts, I can do it in 100; if someone can do it well in 10 attempts, I can do it in 1,000.

44. Like a mayfly, we entrust our brief lives between heaven and earth, tiny as a grain of sand in the ocean. We lament the brevity of our lives, envying the endless waters of the Yangtze River. (But I) know that these aspirations cannot be easily realized, and I can only entrust the lingering sound of the bamboo flute to the melancholic autumn breeze.
