In the embrace of nature, the path of the highest enlightenment is to follow the Tao, harmonizing with its naturalness.
1. In dealing with people and the world, a lifetime of cultivation, we must adhere to the laws and regulations of the universe and the heavens. To comply with them leads to a mind free of worries and ease; to go against them results in a heart burdened with great mountains, enduring constant pain.
2. The thought of non-action runs throughout the entire "Tao Te Ching". Laozi transfers the natural non-action of the Tao to humans, requiring people to act naturally and without action as the Tao does. He points out that "When one acts without action, there is nothing that cannot be governed." As long as people adhere to the principle of non-action, they can handle any matter well.
3. Fear not mediocrity; in the face of nature, all life is ordinary.
4. Historically, those who have been extremely wealthy and powerful have always pursued immortality and eternal life as their greatest desire. Qin Shi Huang, Tang Taizong, and Emperor Chengzu of the Ming Dynasty—how intelligent and formidable these individuals were—yet, because of their fear of death, they were willing to believe in the false promise of immortality and eternal life.
5. Suffering is the norm of life. We should cultivate a wise heart, develop a wise eye, use wisdom to alleviate suffering, use optimism to dispel suffering, and use positivity to conquer suffering.
6. No matter how hard life may be, if one maintains an optimistic attitude and has no desires or ambitions, one can still find a lot of joy.
7. Humans are the embodiment of the harmony between heaven and earth. This means incorporating the natural principles and meanings of heaven and earth into the heart, achieving the harmony and beauty of the natural world, encompassing both the brightness and abundance and the subtle states. Therefore, the "Rites of the Rites of the Universe" says: "Humans are the virtues of heaven and earth, the intersection of yin and yang, the convergence of ghosts and spirits, and the most excellent qi of the five elements." In this way, humans naturally align with the natural world, taking the laws and conventions of the natural world as their model and image. The meaning of "the path of humans" here is thus: "The harmony of heaven and earth is also manifested in this way of brightness and abundance, as well as in the subtle states."
8. "Great" refers to the ceaseless operation and transformation, meaning it is everywhere and reaches all places. It traverses the ancient and the modern, the eight directions and the six poles, reaching the extreme distant and returning to the essence of things. Because the Tao is infinite and boundless, it is said that the Tao is great, and thus heaven, earth, and humans who follow the Tao are also great. The universe has four "greats."
9. Cultivate a strong heart, let everything come as fate wills, go with the flow, remain undisturbed by waves, and undisturbed by all things.
10. Oh my, it is a part of nature. The natural principles of the heavens and the earth are naturally the principles of the heavens and the earth. The meaning of the heavens as the ultimate, beyond which there is nothing greater, signifies brightness and abundance, being clear and distinct. This is completely identical to the principles of the Tao. In this way, heaven naturally expresses itself in the manner of the principles of the natural heavens and the earth. The "Tao of heaven" here refers to expressing what kind of principle state in what kind of principle manner. Thus, the meaning of "Tao of heaven" is: "Brightness and abundance is expressed in a way that is harmonious and beautifully integrated."
11. Humans are also among them. Humans must follow the law and characteristics of the land. The principle of the land is to submit to the heavens, and the heavens operate based on the Tao, which is the natural way, without any artificial exertion.
12. All self-righteousness is a joke!
13. No matter how sweet life may be, if one is overly concerned with trivial matters and gets entangled in everything, one may still feel a sense of sorrow and resentment, and feel lifeless.
14. The Tao Te Ching says: "Man follows the Earth, the Earth follows the Heaven, the Heaven follows the Tao, and the Tao follows the Way of Nature."
15. The laws governing the operation of all things and beings are in accordance with the laws of nature. The most expressive word for "Dao" is the law of nature, and conversely, the character that is closest to the natural law we are talking about here is also "Dao". This includes the way of nature, the way of society, and the way of human endeavor.
16. No matter who we encounter or what happens, we can keep our cool, detach ourselves, see through it, let go, and there is no need to hold onto it, remember it endlessly, or be tormented and anxious.
17. The heavens follow the Tao, and the Tao follows nature: the heavens imitate the Tao, and the Tao imitates nature. The Tao is vast and mysterious, giving rise to the heavens and the earth, and all things within them. Through the phrase "the Tao follows nature," we understand that the Tao is naturally generated. The Tao learns from nature, imitates, and conforms to nature. The Tao is supreme, even it must conform and imitate nature, let alone humans.
18. People follow the Earth: It means that people should take the Earth as the law. Spring birth, summer growth, autumn harvest, winter storage, health is to follow this law. In spring, the Earth's Yang energy rises, the land's vitality recovers, and people should go to till the land, to follow the growth of all flowers. In summer, all things thrive, lush, and prosperous, the human body and the entire Earth are in a state of "vigor."
19. Buddha said, "The essence of life is suffering. Birth, old age, illness, and death; meeting with those one dislikes; parting from those one loves; not getting what one desires; and being unable to let go. Each one of these can make people anxious and纠结, or feel heartbroken."
20. "Autumn harvest, winter storage" – in autumn, fruits ripen, marking the season of harvest. The term "pasting autumn fat" that we use refers to the idea of cultivating one's body and mind in a timely manner during this season of maturity. In winter, a heavy snowfall covers the earth, and the entire land enters a state of nourishment and rest, preparing for the recovery of the following year.
21. Therefore, humans should merge with the heavens and the earth, learn to embrace the great way's包容万物 broadmindedness, and live in harmony with nature. Only in this way will humans live a carefree and joyous life, doing what is right without any intention and not doing what is wrong without any intention.
22. Since the recognition of death, humans have lived in fear of death. When we see others die suddenly or suffer from incurable diseases, in pain waiting to die, we become anxious and uneasy.
23. Every thing has its own nature and essence, and every person has their own unique way of thinking and personality traits. What people should be aware of is that the effect of transforming a person is limited.
24. Fearlessness towards death, as death is a natural law.
25. Fear not hardship; hardship is a natural law.
26. The King of Hell has decreed your death at the third watch, and I will not let you survive until the fifth watch.
27. Humans are always too small, no matter how hard you try, you cannot withstand the power of nature.
28. The concepts of heaven and earth, reason and qi, and so on, all originate from this kind of understanding. The "Tao" becomes a path, or a principle, or a form of qi, and this Tao represents the network structure or the weaving state of things. In philosophy, the network structure of things is referred to as logic, law, and principle. Logic, law, and principle are also what we commonly refer to as "rules" in philosophy. Because of this method or approach, each thing is interconnected, and each thing is integrated into a single, homogenous substitute state. The meaning of the Tao is simultaneously one and also easy. Of course, because it brings together each thing, making things clear and transparent, and connects all influences and effects, this state is known as being comprehensive and harmonious, or good, beautiful, and abundant. Being comprehensive and harmonious, or good, beautiful, and abundant, means there are no defects left, and there is no need for filling in the gaps, which is why it is referred to as the ultimate or supreme.
29. "The way of man is based on the earth, the way of the earth is based on the heaven, the way of heaven is based on the Tao, and the way of the Tao is based on nature." Laozi uses a seamless technique to succinctly summarize and elucidate the life laws of heaven, earth, humanity, and even the entire universe. "The Tao follows its own nature" reveals the characteristics of the entire universe, encompasses the attributes of all things between heaven and earth, and all things in the universe and the heavens follow or adhere to the "natural" law of the Tao. The Tao takes itself as its own rule.
30. Do not fear mediocrity, for the essence of life is mediocrity, and the universe's instruction to us is to lead a life of mediocrity.
31. Accept mediocrity, be content with mediocrity, and enjoy mediocrity; let us pass through life in the ordinary hustle and bustle of the world without haste and worry.
32. When people contemplate the "Tao," it spawns endlessly from a vast nest, thus giving rise to all things. When people feel it, there is a harmony between heaven and man, and thus all things come to rest.
33. Some people think they are very capable, changing the sky and the earth, stirring up the clouds and the wind, but in the face of the universe and the heavens and the earth, they are as unremarkable as ants to us.
34. The Earth follows the sky: the earth follows the sky's will. The spring sees all flowers blooming due to the rain from the heavens; the summer sees all things lush and green because of the most scorching sunlight; the autumn sees fruits ripe due to the growth from spring and summer, and it is naturally the time for harvest; the winter sees all things in repose because of the snow from the heavens, which covers the earth.
35. In nature, the Tao is the principle of the natural heaven and earth, the logic in the natural heaven and earth, and the law in the natural heaven and earth. Of course, the Tao is formed according to the development or change of the natural heaven and earth. Therefore, the Tao is governed by the laws or principles of nature. That is to say, the Tao takes the development or change of nature as its image, as the constant state of movement and change. In the interpretation of Chinese, law is described as constant, long-lasting, regulating, and symbolic, all of which are talking about this. As for nature, there is no need to say much about it; it is the foundation, the original state, and the basis of everything. Therefore, nature is naturally appropriate and appropriate. The meaning of "the Tao follows nature" here is naturally: "The principles of the natural heaven and earth are based on the original state that cannot be said, and take it as the norm and the law."
36. In this world, regardless of your achievements or how you live, you are a可怜 wretch who is utterly ordinary.
37. Life is indeed bitter; one can only save oneself.
38. All those who think themselves invincible are merely that restless ant. A child's urine can bring you to ruin. An unintentional urine from the Creator can turn us into ashes and smoke.
39. Therefore, humans should not rely on their clever minds and independent thinking to dominate all things in the world, but should conform to nature and respect it. If one destroys the harmony of nature, engages in massive slaughtering of livestock, and arbitrarily cuts down forests, then the Tao and the heavens and earth will punish humanity at any time.
40. Su Shi said, "To cast a mayfly into the universe, it is but a grain of sand in the boundless sea." This means that in the span of a lifetime, humans are as fleeting as mayflies, existing briefly, and as insignificant as a grain of sand in the great ocean.
41. "The 'Tao' refers to the principle and rationale of the natural heavens and earth. What is the principle and rationale of the natural heavens and earth? The principle and rationale of the natural heavens and earth refers to the boundaries or divisions between every kind of thing in nature. This kind of boundary or division, by separating each thing from the other, also clearly presents the relationships or connections between each thing, thereby making it clear how each thing influences or interacts with others. Thus, it becomes easy to understand the development or change of any thing; hence, it allows one to judge, choose, or exert force to act accordingly. This forms a method or approach to judge and understand things. In Chinese, this is called 'Tao'. The Chinese character for 'wen' (text), is also trained to mean 'Tao'. 'Wen' means 'arranged lines', and 'wen' is also 'Tao'. In the Chinese interpretation of 'Tao', it is said to refer to roads, principles, and rationale."
42. To follow the Tao and conform to nature, to live naturally as nature does, is the best way of life for us.
