On the journey to explore the silent power: opening the path of inner tranquility, we will embark on a dialogue between the soul and the self.
Professor Zeng Shiqiang said: "From childhood to adulthood, people who talk too much will first exhaust their vital energy, and their health will not be good; secondly, others will get tired of listening to them."
2. We spend two years learning to speak but a lifetime learning to be silent. People who talk endlessly and non-stop are not good at oratory, but rather have low IQ and EQ. Little do they know that others only like people who speak appropriately and are not fond of those who talk too much and say too much.
3. Learning to shut up is a lifelong practice for us.
4. Whether it is a master of Buddhism or Taoism, during their deep cultivation, they always keep their eyes tightly closed and do not utter a word. This is because both their bodies and minds require an absolute state of tranquility, where all sounds are hushed and all disturbances are absent.
5. Moreover, talking excessively can disrupt the vital energy of life, leading to obstructed flow of Qi and blood, thereby affecting physical health.
6. Do not say unnecessary things, and there is no need to say things that are not useful. Even if you do speak, it's best to just touch upon the subject and not dwell on it.
7. Learn to shut up, nourish your yang energy, and treat your body kindly.
8. When water is extremely still, its images become clear; when a person is extremely still, wisdom arises.
9. The stream makes a loud noise, while the still water runs deep. It is only when a person is in a state of tranquility that they can generate inspiration and find the wisdom to break through a deadlock.
10. If one is restless and eager to express themselves with words, they will lack in thoughtfulness and may feel at a loss.
11. When faced with a matter, do not rush to express yourself. Instead, take a moment to calm down and think deeply, which will make it easier to come up with the best method.
12. Zhuge Liang was stationed in Xicheng, with only a few hundred old and weak soldiers under his command. At this time, a scout reported that Sima Yi was leading hundreds of thousands of troops to launch another attack.
13. The city officials were in a state of chaos, frantically voicing their opinions: some advocated for abandoning the city and fleeing, others suggested opening the gates to surrender, and still others proposed closing the gates and fighting to the death.
14. Only Zhuge Liang remained as firm as a mountain, as still as a rock. He kept silent and thoughtful, until everyone had stopped arguing, then he spoke his countermeasure. This is the famous Empty City Strategy.
15. People who are always talking are often superficial, while those who remain silent are often holding back a big move, and there will always be something astonishing from them.
16. A wise person's words are few, while an impetuous person's words are many.
17. The fortunate are few in words, while the restless are many in words.
18. Throughout history, many misfortunes have arisen due to the inability to keep one's mouth shut, talking too much, revealing secrets, or offending others. By keeping silent, one can avoid misfortune and preserve one's own fortune.
19. 孔子的学生子张问:怎样才能做官?孔子答:多听别人说,对有疑虑的地方,不要妄加评论,其余有把握的要谨慎地说出,能少犯错误;
19. Confucius' student Zizhang asked: "How can one become an official?" Confucius replied: "Listen to others more, and do not rashly comment on things that you have doubts about. Speak cautiously about the rest that you are confident about, so as to minimize mistakes."
20. Observe others while they work; for the parts that you have doubts about, do not act impulsively. For the rest that you are confident about, act cautiously; this can reduce regret.
21. With fewer mistakes in speaking and fewer regrets in action, your official fortune and future prospects will be bright.
22. One who is restless and anxious will achieve nothing. One who is calm and composed will accumulate a hundred blessings.
23. Know when to shut up, and happiness will come.
24. Confucius' students noticed that he was not speaking and asked for the reason. Confucius said, "What does heaven say? The four seasons proceed, and all things are born, what does heaven say?"
25. The heavens never speak, but the seasons cycle, all things grow, and everything proceeds in order.
26. Just like humans, learning to shut up will make your life more orderly and better.
27. The Buddha resides within the heart, not on the face. The Buddha is living and possesses human nature. Since even birds possess the Buddha-nature, why can't there be more tolerance and love among people?
28. Everyone has desires, but desires that exceed one's own capacity for bearing will only lead oneself into the quagmire of pain. Learning to be content is the key to opening the door to happiness. Cultivating a calm mind will make suffering fade away little by little and happiness become increasingly intense. Calmness is as still as water. The tranquility of the mind is nourished by the depth of the mind. Whether it's joy or sorrow, the stories of yesterday are best left in the dreams of yesterday.
29. A good teacher and a good friend can nourish your life and warm your journey. The number of friends is not what matters; high-quality friendship always occurs between two excellent independent personalities, its essence being mutual sincere appreciation and respect for each other...
30. Life's path always has a few ups and downs; the taste of life always has a bit of bitterness. There are some things that we cannot change, so we should go with the flow; there are some paths that we cannot avoid, so we should proceed without hesitation. Without sunlight, learn to enjoy the coolness of the wind and rain; without flowers, learn to appreciate the fragrance of the earth; the eyes that smile can see beautiful scenery; and a simple heart can have a happy mood.
31. Traveling alone, free from束缚 and constraints. One day, pack up your bag, take yourself along, and walk as far as you can. Time is always young, and we grow old slowly. There are some people who never come, and then we have to leave. There are some things we cannot obtain, and then we have to let them go. There are some past experiences, whether about happiness or pain, that can only be buried deep within our hearts. There are some expectations, about the present or the future, that can only be chosen to forget.
32. We each have a time cost to our living, as life is limited and every second spent is gone forever. However, the preciousness of time should prompt us to cherish every day and every minute, rather than becoming a shackle that confines us to doing certain things at certain ages. Our lives are rich and varied, and there is no reason why we cannot pursue different things at this age.
33. The essence of human life lies in simple joys, and all things that are reserved, subtle, profound, and reserved are just for better sedimentation and to wash away all superficiality. If one day, after wandering through the mountains and rivers of time, and tasting all the flavors of life's hardships, you can still return to the original clarity and purity, then that is true simplicity, true joy.
34. Fu Dashi's verse says: Every night I sleep with the Buddha, every morning we rise together, sitting and standing, we are always by each other's side, never separated by a single hair, like a shadow following its body. If you want to know where the Buddha goes, just listen to this voice.
35. Uttering words to harm oneself, adhere to moderation and do more: "The best thing in the world is the tongue, and the worst thing is still the tongue." "Those who speak ill of me behind my back are afraid of me; those who praise me to my face look down on me." Therefore, one must understand the principle that "disaster originates from the mouth" and control one's own tongue.
36. In the vast world, there are countless sentient beings, where it can be said that every matter has its corresponding cause, such as joyous cause, fortunate cause, interpersonal cause, wealth cause, good cause, and evil cause, etc. Everything follows its cause, and goes with the natural flow. This is not only the attitude of Zen practitioners, but also a kind of spirit needed for a happy life. Following causes is a peaceful survival attitude, as well as a Zen state of existence. "Stay unshaken by favor and disgrace, leisurely watch the flowers bloom and fall in front of the courtyard; leave without intention, carelessly follow the clouds as they roll and unfold beyond." If one can let go of favor and disgrace, that is to be tranquil and at ease.
37. Buddhism teaches us that when we are happy and joyful, we should remember that these happiness and joy are not real and eternal, just like the rainbow that appears in the sky, which is both brief and ephemeral. Similarly, when we are in pain and worry, we should also think that these sufferings and worries are impermanent and illusionary, just like the loss of children in a dream. Whether we are happy or suffering, we should not overly attach ourselves to or be obsessed with them, but should regard them as illusions and dreams, as transformations without reality.
38. A fulfilling life lies in giving love, achieving a sense of accomplishment, and experiencing joy and ease.
39. [Everyday Zen Sayings] What people in today's era lack is not knowledge and theory of Buddhism, but rather, the genuine lack of unwavering faith in the Dharma and deep belief in causality. This is the fundamental reason why we cannot achieve success.
40. The heart should be like the Bag of乾坤, open and unobstructed, and be present when it enters.
41. If there is illness, not to recite Buddha's name but to call a sorcerer, consult divination, invite evil spirits, the divine spirits will distance themselves, unable to protect well, evil spirits will increase day by day, evil ghosts will gather at the gate, causing decay and depletion, and everything will not go smoothly. Such sinners in the present world are not disciples of the Buddha! - From the Sutra on Serving the Buddha
42. The bodhisattva sees non-Buddhist sects and evil people, their words slandering the Buddha sound like the piercing of the heart with three hundred spears. How much more so if they slander the Buddha with their own mouths! - From Volume Two of the "Sutra of the Great Virtue of Manjushri".
43. Reaching such a level of cultivation, my heart is filled with confusion and I feel ashamed. In reality, no matter how prosperous the world is, it is merely for the sake of meeting the demands of life. Just as the moon may be beautiful, it remains cold and cannot be transformed into compassion to save people. Therefore, instead of struggling and striving for material things, it is better to break free from the bondage of external objects, and live a joyful life with a peaceful mind that is at ease with the gentle breeze and floating clouds.
44. All sentient beings are the supporting factors for cultivation, indispensable objects for cultivation on the path. In the "Treatise on the Conduct of People," the Bodhisattva寂天 says: "The factors on which the practice depends, the sentient beings are like all the Buddhas, respecting the Buddha but not respecting the crowd, is there such a teaching?" From the perspective of the supporting factors for cultivation, the role of sentient beings is equal to that of the Buddha. Both the Buddha and the sentient beings are of equal importance. Then, why do we only respect the Buddha but not the sentient beings?
45. The concept of "karma" is not exclusive to Buddhism; it is a belief that is necessarily present in every country and every nation. In Hollywood blockbusters, the bad guys always suffer in the end; in a 20-episode TV series, the bad guys can be smug for 19 episodes, but they are sure to face retribution in the last episode.
46. Being a calm, composed, resolute, and宽容 opponent is a virtue on the playing field.
47. The wisdom of Zen is boundless, and both its breadth and measure are the wisdom of Zen. With a broad mind, one can let go of all the烦恼 caused by self-attachment; with a generous heart, one can embrace everything about others, thus achieving true freedom, practicing true compassion, and gaining true wisdom.
48. For instance, a person attains enlightenment and saves all beings in a dream, yet this is without any path or beings. The nature of the Buddha-dharma is also the same; sitting in the Dharma hall, there is no attainment. If there is no attainment, then there is no existence. Clarity and ignorance are the same. Knowing this is to be revered as the Honored One. The nature of beings is enlightenment, and the nature of enlightenment is beings. The assembly of bodhisattvas is also not twofold. Knowing this is to be revered as the Honored One. The Sutra on the Non-Action of All Dharmas.
49. What people often need to change is not the environment, but their own hearts. Life is imperfect, life is very limited, and life is composed of a series of causes and conditions. To experience a more profound life and discover inner spirituality, we cannot solely pursue the external material life.
50. If a monk who is pretending to be sick has no disciples, he should be assigned by the assembly to visit the sick in a sequential order. The reason for this is that, having left this, one will not see where one's offerings are being used, and the merit is greater than that of visiting the sick. As for those who visit the sick, they visit me without any distinction. If there is an offering to me, as well as to past Buddhas, and they bestow merit on me, then there is no difference in visiting the sick. In the "Ekottara Agama Sutra," Volume forty, the Buddha said in the chapter on the nine realms of existence.
51. Belief is a capability, an energy, and more importantly, a healthy mindset.
52. Since I have become a Buddha, through various causes and conditions, various parables, I have widely propagated teachings, countless expedient means, guiding sentient beings to脱离 all attachments.
53. In order to live a harmonious life, to create a better world, and to survive in a better environment, everyone must learn the true meaning of "tolerance."
54. Now it is the era of computers, where people are accustomed to using their brains but have lost touch with their hearts. The heart triumphs over the brain. The heart is extremely agile and wondrous; the brain, however, is dull and obtuse.
