The person who is overly restless will lack profound resolve, the person who is overly fearful will lack exceptional vision, the person who is overly greedy will lack generosity, the person who talks too much will lack a sincere heart, and the person who is overly brave will lack literary elegance.
4. 10从人可羞,刚愎自用可恶。不执不阿,是为中道。寻常不见得,能立于波流风靡之中,最为雅操。—— 曾国藩
4. It is deplorable for a person to be conceited and stubborn. Not being dogmatic or yielding to flattery is the path of moderation. It is not common to see this, and being able to stand amidst waves and winds is the most noble of virtues. — Zeng Guofan
5. 9古之人修身以避名,今之人饰己以要誉。所以古人临大节而不夺,今人见小利而易守。
5. In ancient times, people cultivated themselves to avoid fame, while in modern times, people adorn themselves to seek praise. This is why the ancients remained steadfast in their principles when faced with great crises, whereas the moderns easily compromise when presented with minor gains.

14. 2凡办一事,必有许多艰难波折,吾辈总以试心求之,虚心处之。心诚则志专而气足,千磨百折,而不改其常废,终有顺理成章之一日。心虚则不动客气,不挟私见,终可为人共亮。
14. 2 In handling any matter, there will always be many difficulties and twists and turns. We should always try to seek the truth with an open heart and deal with it humbly. With sincerity, one's resolve is focused and one's spirit is full. After countless trials and tribulations, one does not deviate from their usual path and eventually, there will come a day when things fall into place naturally. With an open mind, one does not indulge in arrogance or carry personal biases, and in the end, can be a beacon for others to follow.
15. 24百种弊病,皆从懒生。—— 曾国藩

16. 17凡事留余地,雅量能容人。—— 曾国藩
16. 17 Leave room for others in everything, and a generous heart can tolerate people. —— Zeng Guofan
17. 17受挫受辱之时,务须咬牙励志,蓄其气而长其智。
忍耐挫折与屈辱之时,必须咬紧牙关,激发斗志,积蓄力量并增长智慧。
18. 12天下事无所为而成者极少,有所贪有所利而成者居其半,有所激有所逼而成者居其半。
18. Very few things in the world are achieved without any effort, half of them are achieved due to greed and benefits, and the other half are achieved through being stimulated or pressured.
19. 4君子之立志也,有民胞物与之量,有内圣外王之业,而后不忝于父母之所生,不愧为天地之完人。

When the four gentlemen set their resolve, they have the breadth of mind to share with all people and things, the accomplishment of both inner sainthood and outer kingship, and then they will not be a shame to their parents who gave them life, nor will they feel ashamed to be considered as perfect individuals by the heavens and the earth.

21. 行事不可任心,说话不可任口。

23. 1受挫受辱之时,务须咬牙励志,蓄其气而长其智。

24. 坚其志,苦其心,劳其力,事无大小,必有所成。
24. Persevere in your resolve, endure hardships, exert your efforts, and in any undertaking, big or small, you will surely achieve success.
25. 6天地之道,刚柔互用,不可偏废。太柔则靡,太刚则折。刚非暴戾之谓也,强矫而已;柔非卑弱之谓也,谦退而已。趋事赴公,则当强矫;争名逐利,则当谦退。
25. The way of heaven and earth is the mutual use of the strong and the soft, which cannot be neglected. Too soft and it becomes decadent, too strong and it will break. The strong is not a reference to brute force, but rather to being robust and resilient; the soft is not a reference to weakness, but rather to humility and retreat. When engaging in public affairs, one should be robust and resilient; when vying for fame and wealth, one should be humble and retreat.
26. 18凡一家之中,勤敬二字能守得几分,未有不兴
26. In any family, if one can maintain a degree of diligence and respect, there is none that will not thrive.
27. 少年经不得顺境,中年经不得闲境,晚年经不得逆境。曾国藩人生三境说。
27. Young men cannot endure prosperity, middle-aged men cannot endure idleness, and elderly men cannot endure adversity. This is Zeng Guofan's theory of the three stages of life.

32. In 16 days, it is rare for things to be accomplished without any intention or desire, and half of the things are achieved due to desires and benefits, while the other half are achieved due to being stimulated or pressured.
33. 9凡畏人,不敢妄议论者,谦谨者也;凡好讥评人短者,骄傲者也
33.9 Those who fear people and dare not make arbitrary comments are humble and cautious; those who like to make fun of others' shortcomings are proud.
34. 既往不恋,当下不杂,未来不迎。
34. Do not dwell on the past, do not be entangled in the present, and do not anticipate the future.
35. 8居有恶邻,坐有损友,借以检点自慎,亦是进德之资。
35. Living next to a bad neighbor and having harmful friends, one can use this as a means to be vigilant and cautious, which is also beneficial for cultivating virtue.

46. To govern one's heart and body, the principles do not need to be too many, and knowledge should not be too diverse. The things that are useful in daily life are just one or two sentences, which is what is meant by 'keeping to the essentials'.
47. 26一生之成败,皆关乎朋友之贤否,不可不慎也。
47. The success or failure in one's life is all related to whether one's friends are wise or not, and it cannot be taken lightly.
48. 13失意事来,治之以忍,方不为失意所苦。快心事来,处之以淡,方不为快心所惑。
48. When unfortunate events occur, deal with them by enduring patience, then you will not be distressed by your setbacks. When pleasant events come, treat them with indifference, then you will not be confused by your happiness.

49. Only the utmost sincerity in the world can overcome the utmost hypocrisy; only the utmost simplicity in the world can overcome the utmost cunning.

58. 13轻财足以聚人,律己足以服人,量宽足以得人,身先足以率人。
58. 13 Modesty in wealth is enough to gather people, self-discipline is enough to win people's respect, generosity is enough to win people's support, and leading by example is enough to lead people.
59. 17居有恶邻,坐有损友,借以检点自慎,亦是进德之资。—— 曾国藩
59. To have a bad neighbor and an unprofitable friend is a way to self-examine and be cautious; it is also a resource for improving one's character. — Zeng Guofan
60. 人该省事,不该怕事。人该脱俗,不可矫俗。不该顺时,不可趋时。
60. People should be easygoing and not afraid of troubles. They should transcend the mundane and not imitate the customs. They should not simply follow the times, nor should they blindly chase after trends.
61. 8利可共而不可独,谋可寡而不可众。独利则败,众谋则泄。
61. The benefits of 8 can be shared but not enjoyed alone; plans can be made by a few but not by many. Acting alone leads to failure, while too many plans can lead to a leak of secrets.
