In the long river of time, the cradle of Chinese civilization has nurtured a unique cultural heritage. To be content with the constant, to find joy in oneself, and to derive joy from helping others – this is the spiritual heritage that the Chinese nation has passed down from generation to generation, and it is also the key to exploring the path of life. This article will lead you into this land brimming with wisdom and philosophy, and together we will experience the profound and profound essence of Chinese health preservation.

1. Understanding contentment, being grateful for the blessings from heaven, and living well in the present moment is the best attitude towards things outside oneself.

2. Once, Su Shi went out with his friends to handle some business, and suddenly they encountered heavy rain. His friends were soaked through and groaned in complaint. However, Su Shi walked calmly in the rain and wind, savoring the poetic atmosphere of the elements. He recited:

3. Cultivate one's inner self, and when the spiritual home is abundant and beautiful, the embellishment of external things becomes insignificant. During a period of her teaching at Tsinghua University, the faculty and staff were required to submit monthly reports, applying for their material benefits. Yang Jiang never disputed with others, and both her applications and her benefits were the least; her entire monthly allowance was a sack of 60 jin of millet, with nothing else.

4. Understand contentment, lighten the burden of life, and empower the soul. Happiness has nothing to do with the material possessions and fame and fortune one has, but is solely related to the inner self. Cultivate a heart that is rich yet simple, allowing happiness to follow you like a shadow.

5. Master Xu Yun inherited the five schools of Zen Buddhism, was one of the founders of the Chinese Buddhist Association, and served as the Honorary President. He passed away in 1959 at the age of 120. He advocated: "Three things are not enough!"

6. Living in poverty, he exchanged the only silver he had for copper coins, strung them up on the beam of the room, and carefully calculated how to spend them. Unable to afford beef and mutton, he bought relatively cheaper pork and cooked it in various ways to eat. The "Dongpo Braised Pork Leg" and "Dongpo Pork" he created were delicious and tasty, and were famous far and wide.

7. Whenever he had leisure, Su Shi would roam the mountains and rivers, visit monks to seek wisdom, indulge in gourmet food, compose poems and verses, making the originally arduous and trivial days vibrant and delightful, leading a life of ease and contentment.

8. Master Xu Yun is one of the most legendary monks of modern times. He wrote his own couplet, saying:

9. Wen Ruxi of the Qing Dynasty, after passing the imperial examination and becoming a jinshi, once sought a fortune teller for advice on his future. The fortune teller said, "Based on your facial features, you can reach the rank of a fourth-rank official." Later, when Wen Ruxi returned to his hometown, he saw that the local people were suffering from the floods. Therefore, he gathered local wealthy landowners to solicit donations for building dikes and embankments. At the same time, he donated funds to establish a public school, benefiting the people.

10. In the end, Wen Ruxi not only held high office but also became the teacher of the Jiaqing Emperor. His son also achieved great success and brought honor to the entire family.

11. Yang Jiang believes that material things, after all, are just about the basics of being well-fed and warm, and there is really no need for too much of them. Fame and wealth, after all, are just superficial glitz, and there is no need to be overly concerned about them. The most charming scenery in life is the inner calmness and composure.

12. For this reason, a certain He Zhi Mi wrote an article, analyzing the ten secrets of why monks live long, calling it:

13. A rich heart requires less from the outside world. A barren heart, on the other hand, needs the accumulation of external things to show its strength. Just as the more formidable a person is, the more modest they tend to be. The full ears of rice bow their heads downward, while the hollow millet boasts to the heavens.

14. Middle-aged people are constantly haunted by stress, and their physical condition is getting worse. They must cultivate a positive and optimistic mindset in order to cope with all the misfortunes and setbacks in life's journey.

15. A person who takes joy in helping others, with kind-hearted thoughts, benefits others, has a warm heart, and a fragrant soul, is welcomed everywhere they go, and heaven will also bestow endless blessings upon them.

16. Many revolutionary slogans in the past were actually very功利istic, and should be scientifically examined. Especially the elderly, they should not be bound by these slogans anymore, subjecting themselves to hardship and bothering others. It is unnecessary to suffer unnecessarily. Our generation has developed a hardworking and simple lifestyle through long-term revolutionary experiences, which is highly valuable. However, with the development of society and the economy, today's elderly do not need to subject themselves to excessive hardship. We always say, "Rest is for better work," while foreigners believe "Work is for better rest." The traditional Chinese concept is to save money by living frugally for the sake of children and grandchildren, while foreigners think that earning money is for spending it. After the children turn 18, they become independent and lead their own lives without trouble. It seems that some of our ideas should be adjusted. Grandchildren will have their own blessings, and there is no need to worry too much about them. At what age, do what is appropriate. When it's time to do something, give it your all, forget about sleep and food, and do it without looking back. When it's not the right time, withdraw completely and calmly move on. Do not be lazy and drag on when it's time to do something, and cling to it when it's not the right time.

17. The highest境界 of old age is to enjoy the joy of maturity, the joy of family, the joy of developing one's personality, the joy of pursuing interests, and even the joy of solitude. It is important to be good at enjoying solitude. Whether the old age is well-lived is partly due to society and mostly due to oneself. Happiness is a state of mind, a subjective feeling. To achieve the three joys of old age: "be content with what one has, find joy in oneself, and take joy in helping others," this is the highest level of happiness in traditional Chinese culture. To reach this level, one will be happy everywhere and at all times. — Sent by a friend, shared with friends — Dedicated to senior friends and those who will eventually grow old. According to the 2010 Population Census results, the population over 60 in our country is 13.26%, reaching 17.765 billion. At the same time, an increasing number of senior citizens are facing various problems in their lives. This article presents the insights of Qian Boyi, an outstanding scientist in the field of pharmacology and toxicology, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, a lieutenant general, and also a wandering traveler, on the joys of his retirement. His colorful experiences have been compiled into this piece, hoping to bring some inspiration to senior friends and those who will eventually grow old.

18. Keep your mind at peace. When the mind is at peace, the energy flows smoothly, when the energy flows smoothly, the blood circulates freely, and when the blood circulates freely, diseases are eliminated.

19. As one reaches middle age, it is naturally to carry heavy burdens and move forward involuntarily. Cultivating a good mindset, seeking happiness for oneself, making the soul simple, free, and positive, is the best form of self-care.

20. There was a venerable elder named Miao Zhi in Fujian Province who specialized in practicing the methods of the Medicine Buddha's Dharma for dispelling disasters and prolonging life. He passed away in 2003 at the age of 106, and several years later, his body was found to have achieved a relic of the body. I had the honor to arrange his seat. At the age of 105, he still traveled to pay homage in six provinces. He advocated:

21. Liang Shuming, who passed away in 1988 at the age of 95, was a master of Buddhism. He claimed that in his previous life he was a monk. His secret to longevity is:

22. Learn to find joy in yourself, whether you are in the spotlight or in the doldrums, in the grandeur or the confinement, because it is a ray of light in the cracks of life.

23. Nan Huairen, passed away in 2012 at the age of 95, was a master of traditional Chinese culture and a master of Zen Buddhism. His philosophy of health and longevity, as he himself put it:

24. "Do not listen to the sound of leaves rustling through the forest, why not sing and blow a horn while walking leisurely. A bamboo staff and straw sandals are lighter than a horse, who dares to fear? With just a raincoat and a bamboo hat, I let the mist and rain guide my life."

25. Understand the joy of contentment, don't stubbornly fight against fate, and don't strive excessively with oneself. Live simply and work diligently with a solid foundation.

26. As an old saying goes: "What you give out will come back to you, and what you send forth will come back to you." Those who can help others will eventually receive others' gratitude and kindness in return. Such a life is a process of spreading love and receiving love, how could it not be happy?

27. Xunzi said, "Accumulate good deeds to cultivate virtue, and divine wisdom will naturally emerge, with the sacred heart fully prepared." By helping others and accumulating small acts of kindness, you will transform them into radiant virtue and possess the mindset of a sage.

28. In the span of a lifetime, what we truly need is not much, but what we desire is excessive, and this is the root of suffering. By renouncing greed and letting go of excessive demands on the outside world, life will not be burdened with so many troubles and disputes, and naturally, the consumption of life will also be reduced.

29. Middle-aged people should make themselves happy and face each day actively and stylishly.

30. After returning to the capital, he encountered the fortune teller again. The fortune teller said, "You must have sown many blessings, otherwise how could your facial features and bone structure have changed so much? You can now be promoted to another rank."

31. A kind-hearted person who takes joy in helping others will never be disappointed. Because the natural order of the universe is that what goes around comes around, and causality is not a lie. Good deeds will eventually bear good fruits, and those who cultivate the field of merit will ultimately reap bountiful harvests.

32. Regardless of the circumstances one finds oneself in, as long as one maintains an optimistic attitude and finds joy within, life will be as beautiful and smooth as a clear mountain and flowing water.

33. Wen Ruxi told his fortuneteller about his experience of returning to his hometown. The fortuneteller sighed and said, "One's face reflects what is in their heart, and one's circumstances change with their heart." You have kind thoughts, helping others in their difficulties, and you will definitely reap good fruits and receive blessings. Your future prospects are limitless.

34. The ancients said: There are three inadequacies in cultivation. Not enough to eat, not enough to wear, not enough to sleep. Not enough to eat, eat only to satisfy hunger, not to overindulge, much less to seek delicious food. Not enough to wear, wear only to ward off the cold, it is best to wear the clothes swept from the latrine, much less to crave for beautiful and complete attire. Not enough to sleep, sleep only to refresh oneself, not to sleep for a long time. For excessive sleep leads to increased foolishness, too many clothes increase worries, and overeating hinders one's efforts!

35. Forget the body, forget yourself, forget your lifespan, forget time and space. The more you刻意 seek longevity, the worse you will treat your body.

36. There is a St. Christopher Hospice in the UK, which is the oldest of its kind in the world and has a history of over 100 years. Most of the patients spend their time in the activity room reading, knitting, playing cards, praying, singing hymns, and watching TV. Volunteers come every week to chat with them. The majority of them have only about a month left to live – in the last month before their death, they can still enjoy life without pain. Mr. Qin has already instructed his family and students that when he passes away, there is no need to hold a funeral ceremony, as he dislikes the embarrassing scene of crying inside and laughing outside. If, at that time, it is unavoidable and a farewell ceremony for the body must be arranged, it is not necessary to play any sad music, but rather to play a piece by Schumann, "Dreaming," and tell everyone that I have passed away happily and comfortably, because I was an elderly person who lived a long and happy life, fully enjoyed life, and am content. Finally, I wish all senior friends and those who will eventually become seniors happiness and good fortune!

37. Venerable Benhuan, who passed away in 2012 at the age of 106! He was the Honorary President of the Buddhist Association of China. The Venerable emphasized: "To maintain good health, eat to eight parts full at each meal," "Simple tea and light food is beneficial to health, while excessive consumption of rich and spicy food can shorten one's lifespan." What is particularly distinctive about the Venerable's regular lifestyle is his schedule. He said, "I wake up at 4:18 in the morning, take a rest at noon, and then wake up at 1:48 in the afternoon. I go to sleep at 9:00 in the evening. This is my daily routine, which I have been adhering to for decades."

38. Zhao Puchu also adhered to a belief: one does not seek to be free from illness, for without illness, one may become骄奢淫逸; one does not seek to avoid difficulties in one's endeavors, for without difficulties, one may think that the world is easy to accomplish. This is a viewpoint from the "Lingfeng Zonglun" by the Chan master Jieyi. Therefore, he once wrote a poem: "For ten years we crossed turbulent waves, in dreams seeking sweetness while illness grants leisure." This describes the difficult period of those ten years. As people in the past said: "Beside the sinking boat, a thousand sails pass by; in front of the sick tree, ten thousand trees bloom in spring." This resonates with the above sentiment.

39. The best state of life is all about joy.

40. Embrace the Destination Since death is the ultimate destination, a natural necessity of life, there is no need to fear it excessively. Let everything go with the flow and leave it to "fate" to decide.

41. It is not strange that when people leave, the tea cools down. Some elderly people often yearn for the past glory of "crossing five passes and cutting down six generals," and regret that they have empty ambitions and are unable to act. It seems unnecessary. Some elderly people often indulge in the bustling scenes of the past, welcoming and sending off guests, and regret the current loneliness and emptiness, "when a person leaves, the tea cools down." They even complain about the coldness of human feelings and the vicissitudes of life, with endless distress. It seems unnecessary as well. When people leave, the tea will naturally cool down, not only cool down, but also the tea should be poured out because the teacup still has its use. To make arrangements based on the situation and in line with one's own characteristics to improve the quality of life in old age is the strength in life. The elderly live a kind of mindset, and loneliness is also a form of enjoyment. Old age has the joy of maturity, family joy, the joy of developing one's personality, the joy of pursuing interests, and even the joy of loneliness. When lonely, there is ample space for thoughts, full freedom of action, ample time at one's disposal, and a peaceful, undisturbed spiritual realm. Su Dongpo once wrote: "Who am I sitting with? The bright moon, the cool breeze, and I." Many great thinkers, scientists, writers, and artists have created their timeless works in lonely situations. This is not advocating that the elderly lead a lonely life, but it is to say that loneliness is also a form of enjoyment, a beauty. One should learn to enjoy loneliness without fear. We should emphasize both social concern for the elderly and the elderly taking care of themselves. Whether the elderly live well or not depends partly on society and mostly on themselves. The more the elderly hope for social concern, the harder it is to feel satisfied; the less they demand social concern, the easier it is to feel happy. If one is fixated on "making use of leftover heat," "filial piety," "students respecting their teachers," "public respect for the elderly," and "social returns," they are more likely to feel lost. With no desires, there is no loss. After a deep realization, one naturally avoids great sorrow and pain. "Contentment brings joy, self-satisfaction brings joy, helping others brings joy." Joy is a state of mind, a subjective feeling. Some people are unaware of their blessings even when they are in happiness, and they live a difficult life even in good times. Some people can find joy in any situation, enjoying what they enjoy, even finding joy in adversity. One should learn to adapt to circumstances, be contented, and find joy in oneself. Elderly people with knowledge can further enjoy more joy by leveraging their knowledge advantage and insights into life.

42. Zhao Puchu, former president of the Chinese Buddhist Association, a renowned Buddhist scholar. He passed away in 2000 at the age of 93. At the age of 92, Zhao Puchu wrote a poem called "Kuanxin Song" (A Song of Ease), which says: The sun rises in the East and sets in the West, be it a day of worry or a day of joy; when faced with problems, don't get stuck in a dead-end, then your body is comfortable and your mind is at ease; whether you receive more or less pension money, you are happy; with a diet of more vegetables and less meat in each meal, whether coarse or fine, it is sweet and savory; whether you choose new or old clothes, they both keep you warm; chatting with close friends, you talk about the ancient and the modern; you treat your grandsons and granddaughters equally, both your sons and daughters are pleased; the whole family of old and young comfort and encourage each other, be it in poverty or wealth, they are at peace; whether busy or idle, early and late you work hard and exercise, being optimistic; a broad mind and a healthy body enjoy the years of nature, not as a god, but better than a god.

43. Confucius evaluated his disciple Yan Hui: "With one basket of food and one ladle of drink, others would find it unbearable, but Hui does not alter his joy. What a virtuous Hui indeed!" Yan Hui lived in simple clothing and on coarse food, with a poor material condition, yet he was able to maintain inner joy. What an extraordinary person he was indeed.

44. To have accomplishments, joy, and abundant happiness; to have no desires and no demands, and thus no烦恼 (troubles). To achieve the three joys in old age: "Joy in contentment, joy in self-fulfillment, and joy in helping others," this is the high level of happiness in Chinese traditional culture.
