In the long river of history, the self-discipline spirit of the Chinese nation shines like a brilliant pearl, radiating with luster. It is manifested in the love for life, the inheritance of culture, and the loyalty to the country and home. This article will explore the specific manifestations of this spirit in the aspects of "courtesy," "frugality," and "warfare," in order to reveal the path of self-discipline.

1. What are the benefits of self-discipline? What does it mean for our lives?

2. The Lengyan Sutra states: 'All beings who seek samadhi should refrain from consuming the five pungent foods of the world. These five pungents, when eaten cooked, cause inflammation, and when eaten raw, increase anger.' The taste of the five pungents is foul and can easily stir up people's desires. The pungent sensation also tends to increase people's wrath. Even if one can expound on the Dharma, the celestial beings from all directions would be repelled by the stench, and they would all keep their distance. As a result, the person's blessings and causes gradually diminish, and it becomes difficult to accomplish their spiritual path. Therefore, if people wish to cleanse their hearts and desires, and to rid themselves of rebelliousness, in addition to abstaining from alcohol and meat, they should also refrain from consuming the five pungent foods.

3. Abstain from alcohol, never allow reason to be absent, and never give any opportunity for disasters.

4. The "Agama Sutras" mentioned that in order to nourish the lives of sentient beings, there are four types of food: the food of the senses, the food of contact, the food of thought, and the food of consciousness. Only by consuming these foods to maintain health and vitality can one truly understand the essence of Buddhism. Therefore, the "Five Observations of the Buddha's Door" says that if one can contemplate the difficulty of obtaining this meal while eating, one can cultivate a heart of gratitude; to have a heart of humility, to constantly guard oneself, and not to indulge in the deliciousness of food, which can foster greed; to eat is for healing, not for satisfying the desires of the palate; in order to accomplish the path of the Dharma, one must rely on this physical body for practice, even taking meditation joy as food, and being filled with the joy of the Dharma every day.

5. Abandon laziness, create a better life with both hands, and realize life's dreams through diligence.

6. Zeng Guofan was slow in his reactions and clumsy in his thinking from a young age, often mocked by his teachers and classmates. However, he firmly believed that diligence could make up for his deficiencies and that a slow bird would fly first. He would wake up early and go to bed late every day, striving to make the most of every second and improving his studies. In the end, he surpassed everyone else, passed the imperial examination, and was appointed to the Hanlin Academy.

7. Diligence overcomes all difficulties in the world, laziness brings an end to all things in life.

8. During his tenure as a government official in the capital, Zeng Guofan often frequented brothels and pleasure houses with his colleague-friends, wasting his years amidst the pursuit of sensual pleasures. Sometimes, when he saw his friend's attractive concubine, he would be tempted by her beauty and his thoughts would wander aimlessly.

9.3 In fact, we are all familiar with the content mentioned earlier, yet we often still fail to maintain self-discipline. Why is that?

10. Abandon laziness, strive diligently, roll up your sleeves and work hard, take one step at a time and move steadily forward, and you can accumulate small victories into great victories, and change the trajectory of your destiny.

11. Wine is a poison that runs through the intestines, color is a steel knife that scrapes the bones, and laziness is a demon hindrance in life. By giving up these three things, one's life will experience less wear and tear, leading to a healthier, lighter, and more successful life.

12. As the saying goes, "Alcohol can cloud one's judgment." When one drinks too much, they are more prone to impulsiveness, irritability, losing their sense of decorum, and losing their reason. They might say things they wouldn't normally dare to say or do things they wouldn't normally dare to do, and it could be detrimental to themselves.

13. Eileen Chang once said, "When middle-aged people open their eyes, they find that everyone around them depends on them, but there is no one they can depend on themselves."

14. As an old saying goes: "A gentleman is cautious with wine, and abstinence is virtuous." Abstaining from drinking and keeping away from harm is a form of self-love.

15. Abstain from sexual indulgence to preserve the vital yang energy of the body, which will enhance health and attract good fortune.

16. Skillful work is achieved through diligence, while things are ruined by laziness. Learn self-discipline, be a diligent person, and only then will life have hope, direction, and the power to achieve one's own success.

17. Literally speaking, self-discipline first means being able to control one's own behavior and emotions (self-discipline is divided into physical and psychological aspects, just a personal opinion), and secondly, it means forming a routine of actions and emotions that one considers to be correct. Of course, everyone has a different understanding of self-discipline. For example, a game streamer's self-discipline might be to continue streaming games every day, but in some people's eyes, this does not qualify as self-discipline. Some say that self-discipline is about making every second of your life meaningful. So, as long as you think something is meaningful for yourself, just do it and don't worry too much about others.

18. When Zhang Fei awoke from his drunken dream, the city was ablaze with flames, and the sounds of battle were shaking the ground. His own army had collapsed into disarray. Zhang Fei had no choice but to abandon Liu Bei's family and flee alone on a horse.

19. Middle-aged people should control themselves, not harm their bodies, not slacken their minds, maintain a pure heart and have few desires, and strive forward. For themselves, for their families, bear the responsibility of a better life.

20. Some people believe that the degree of self-discipline determines the height of one's life. There are many benefits that self-discipline can bring, such as: a graceful physique (which involves exercising weekly, though it's quite painful), high-quality skin (daily skincare with suitable beauty products), and it can make our lives more meaningful. As we all know, the famous NBA player Kobe Bryant's success is greatly related to self-discipline, which cannot be separated from his decades-long routine of early morning training sessions at 4 a.m.

21. The "Vinaya Sutra" also has very strict regulations regarding the戒 against alcohol, even if one does not drink themselves, selling alcohol and teaching others to drink are considered transgressions. The戒 text explains that selling alcohol is a very serious Pāramārthasāṃkara offense, as the sutra says: 'If a bhikṣu sells alcohol, or teaches others to sell alcohol, no alcohol should be sold, for this alcohol is the cause of sin. And a bodhisattva should cultivate wisdom that enlightens all beings, but instead, they foster confusion in all beings, which is an offense of Pāramārthasāṃkara.' Because the act of selling alcohol can lead beings to become confused and disoriented when they have access to alcohol, causing them to act impulsively and harm others.

22. Little did they know that just as Liu Bei left, Zhang Fei gathered the officers on the city tower and indulged in a feast. He not only got himself drunk but also强迫 everyone else to drink excessively. As a result, a general named Cao Bao, unable to bear Zhang Fei's coercion, conspired with Lü Bu and launched a surprise attack on Xuzhou that very night.

23. The Lancet published an authoritative medical paper. The paper states that every drop of alcohol consumed by the body is harmful and has no benefits. The claims that moderate drinking can relax the meridians, promote blood circulation, and enhance health are entirely unfounded. Abstaining from alcohol can not only bring us health, but also prevent us from losing control due to the numbing effect of alcohol, thus avoiding irreparable losses.

In the novel "Romance of the Three Kingdoms," when Liu Bei went to campaign against Yuan Shu, Zhang Fei volunteered to stay behind and defend Xu State. Liu Bei said, "You have a weakness for wine and are not fit for this responsibility." Zhang Fei solemnly vowed that he would never drink alcohol, and so Liu Bei entrusted him with the task of guarding the city.

25. Moreover, the Buddhist concept of vegetarianism in a broad sense includes abstaining from the consumption of meat, pungent vegetables, and alcohol. The reason the Buddhist teachings advocate against drinking alcohol is that it is said to lead to confusion of the mind, as the verse in the Lengjia Jing (Sutra of the Lotus) states: 'Like the excessive desire, it obstructs the saint's liberation; alcohol, meat, scallions, chives, and garlic, all obstruct the path.' Drinking alcohol is thus listed alongside the consumption of meat and spicy vegetables as causes of obstruction on the path.

26. Human instinctive actions have two main sources: 1) pursuing happiness and 2) avoiding pain. However, people tend to choose the second option more often. For example: if you decide to run in the morning every day, you know it's beneficial for your body, but every morning when you wake up, looking at the outside world, you might still crawl back into your cozy bed and tell yourself, "Let's start tomorrow, it's not that big of a deal to wait a day." (So real, right?) I personally believe that self-discipline is about stepping out of your comfort zone. The first step of self-discipline is very important; it's about setting reasonable goals and not forcing yourself. For instance, if you are currently a 200+ pound person and you decide to become 120 pounds through self-discipline, and you set a time limit for it, you will find it hard to keep going. But if you first set a small goal to lose weight to 170 pounds, and after you weigh yourself every day, I guarantee you will be happy, because you will find that you have made progress towards your goal.

27. What is self-discipline, what are the benefits of self-discipline, and what steps are needed to achieve true self-discipline?

28. Behind every success lies the ascetic-like self-discipline. Make yourself better, and the world will make way for you.

29. The "Extended Collection of Virtuous Proverbs" says: "The plan for a year lies in spring, and the plan for a lifetime lies in diligence." A diligent person, sows in spring, reaps in autumn, and stores in winter, and there will always be a harvest. However, a lazy person who does not strive for progress and seeks comfort will eventually end up with nothing but barrenness.

30. It was this diligence that allowed Zeng Guofan to improve his abilities, strengthen the power of the Xiang Army, and ultimately defeat the Taiping Rebellion, establishing not just a meritorious achievement.

31. Such a life greatly exhausted himself, and Zeng Guofan decided to renounce his desires. He filled his daily schedule to the brim, and besides official duties, he read, wrote, composed essays, played chess, with no time for anything else. Sometimes when his desires stirred, he would write in his diary and severely scold himself, erasing his desires in the process of self-reproach.

32. First and foremost, we must have an attitude of facing difficulties head-on. The beginning of self-discipline is often quite painful because it requires the development of habits, and it takes 26 days to form a habit. So, young people, please hold on. Secondly, you should combine your own actual situation to set appropriate goals. Naturally, if you find that your goals are too big and too far from your current situation, it's easy to give up. Everyone knows that when doing anything, you will encounter a bottleneck period, and self-discipline is no exception. However, once you break through, the benefits are numerous. So please don't give up. Maybe you just need to hold on for one more day, one more hour, or even one more second, and you might succeed. Keep going!

33. A person who is entangled by lust will excessively consume their physical and mental energy, resulting in a significant loss of vitality. Their vitality and creativity will be weakened. Over time, this not only endangers one's health but also leads to the failure to accomplish anything.

34. Zeng Guofan said, "All the common people throughout history have been defeated by laziness." There was a young man who was extremely lazy, always waiting for food to be served and clothes to be handed to him, completely unable to take care of himself. One day, his parents were going on a long trip, and before leaving, they baked a large pancake and hung it around the young man's neck, telling him to bite a few pieces when he was hungry. When the parents returned, the young man was already dead, and only half of the pancake was left. It turned out that the young man would only eat the part within his reach and was too lazy to move for the parts he couldn't reach.
