天意赐福,巧取豪夺终自毁;天意薄幸,众心难违事难成。

Fate bestows blessings, and those who cunningly seize and arbitrarily take will ultimately destroy themselves; fate is unkind, and it is hard to succeed against the will of the masses.

1. 大意跟朋友相处时,必须抱着拔刀相助的侠义精神,而作人处事也要存着一颗天真无邪的赤子之心。

1. In dealing with friends, one must hold the spirit of being ready to lend a hand, with a sense of chivalry, and in dealing with matters and people, one should always maintain a pure, innocent heart.

2. 大意:一个心地善良的人,不论言行举止都极镇定安详,甚至就连睡梦的神情也都洋溢着一团和气;反之一个性情凶暴的人,不论做什么事都手段残忍狠毒,甚至就连在谈笑之间也充满了恐怖的杀气。

2. Summary: A kind-hearted person is extremely composed and tranquil in both words and actions, even in their sleep, exuding an aura of harmony; conversely, a violent person is残忍狠毒in everything they do, even in their jokes, brimming with a terrifying aura of murder.

3. 夜深人静独坐观心,始觉妄穷而真独露,每于此中得大机趣;既觉真现而妄难逃,又于此中得大惭忸。

3. When it's late at night and the world is quiet, sitting alone to observe one's mind, one begins to realize that illusions are exhausted and truth alone is revealed, often gaining great insight from this. Once the truth is realized and illusions are hard to escape, one also gains great humility from this.

4. 大意一个富贵家庭待人接物应宽大仁厚,而很多人却刻薄无理,这种人虽身为富贵之家,可他的行径却与贫贱人相同,这如何保持富贵的身分呢?一个才智出众的人,本应谦虚有礼不露锋芒,可许多人反而夸耀自己的本领如何高强,这种人虽表面聪明,其实他们的言行与无知的人并没有什么不同!那样,他的事业到头来又如何不败呢?

4. The meaning is that a wealthy family should treat people generously and kindly, but many are harsh and unreasonable. Such people, though they come from a wealthy family, behave like the poor and humble, and how can they maintain their status of wealth and rank? A person of exceptional intelligence should be modest and courteous, not showing off their abilities. Yet, many people boast about how excellent their skills are. Although they seem intelligent on the surface, their actions and words are not much different from those of the uneducated! In that case, how can their career not fail in the end?

5. 大意:追求名利时不要抢在他人之前,进修德业时不要落在他人之后;当享受物质生活时不要超过自己的身份地位;当修养品德时,不要达不到自己所能达到的标准。

5. Summary: When pursuing fame and wealth, do not seek to be ahead of others; when improving one's character and virtues, do not lag behind others; when enjoying material life, do not exceed your status and position; when cultivating one's character, do not fall short of the standards you are capable of reaching.

6. 处治世宜方,处乱世宜圆,处叔季之世当方圆并用;待善人宜宽,待恶人宜严,待庸众之人当宽严互存。

6. In times of peace, it is advisable to be straightforward; in times of chaos, it is better to be flexible; in the latter days of a dynasty, one should combine both straightness and flexibility. In dealing with good people, one should be lenient; with evil people, one should be strict; and with the common people, one should balance leniency and strictness.

7. 饱后思味,则浓淡之境都消;色后思*,则男女之见尽绝。故人常以事后之悔悟,破临事之痴迷,则性定而动无不正。

7. After eating, if one ponders the taste, then the distinction between strong and light flavors fades away; after seeing, if one contemplates, then the distinctions between men and women are completely eliminated. Therefore, people often use the regret and realization after an event to break through their infatuation in the face of events, thus stabilizing their nature and ensuring all their actions are proper.

8. 大意美酒佳肴和大鱼大肉都不是真正的美味,其实真正的美味只是那些精茶淡饭;标奇立异,超凡绝俗的人,都不算人间真正的伟人,其实真正的伟人只是那些平凡无奇的人。

8. Luxurious wine and sumptuous food, and big fish and meats, are not truly delicious. In fact, the real delicacies are just those refined tea and simple meals. People who seek to stand out and excel beyond the ordinary are not truly great men of the world. In reality, the truly great individuals are those who are ordinary and unremarkable.

9. 一个人一旦傲慢,自满,就接纳不下任何东西。同时,也会招致别人的嫉恨。

9. Once a person becomes proud and complacent, they cannot accept anything. At the same time, it also attracts the envy of others.

10. 大意在狂风暴雨的天气中,连飞禽都感到哀伤忧虑;在晴空万里的日子里,连草木也呈现出欣欣向荣。由此可见,天地之间不可以一天没有和祥之气,而人间也不可以一天没有欢欣之气。

10. The great mind feels sorrow and anxiety amidst the raging storm; even the birds are somber. On days with clear skies, even the plants and trees show vitality and prosperity. This illustrates that there should not be a single day without harmonious and peaceful aura between heaven and earth, nor should there be a single day without joyous and festive atmosphere in human society.

11. 曾国藩说:“天道忌盈,天道忌巧,天道忌贰。”

Zeng Guofan said, "The heaven abhors complacency, the heaven abhors cunning, and the heaven abhors duplicity."

12. 处世让一步为高,退步即进步的张本;待人宽一分是福,利人实利己的根基。

12. The principle of dealing with others is that giving a step back is a sign of greatness, and stepping back is a form of progress; treating others with a degree of leniency brings happiness, and helping others is actually beneficial to oneself.

13. 曾国藩天资愚钝,性情木讷,做事往往慢半拍,跟不上别人的节奏。

13. Zeng Guofan was dull in nature and unexpressive in temperament. He often lagged half a step behind when it came to doing things, not keeping pace with others.

14. 曾国藩考中进士后,入朝为官,春风得意。

14. After passing the imperial examination and becoming a jinshi, Zeng Guofan entered the royal court and enjoyed great success and prosperity.

15. 大意一个刚踏入社会的青年人阅历虽然很短浅,但是所受各种社会不良习惯的感染也比较少;一个饱经事故而阅历很广的人,各种恶习也随着增加。所以一个有修养的君子,与其讲究做事的圆滑,倒不如保持朴实的个性;与其事事小心谨慎委曲求全,倒不如豁达一点才不会丧失纯真的本性。

15. A young person who has just stepped into society may have a shallow experience, but is less infected by various bad social habits; a person who has experienced many accidents and has a wide range of experiences will accumulate more bad habits. Therefore, a cultivated gentleman would rather maintain a simple personality than strive for smoothness in his actions; it is better to be more open-minded rather than overly cautious and compromising in everything, so as not to lose one's genuine nature.

16. 疾风怒雨,禽鸟戚戚;霁日光风,草木欣欣。可见天地不可一日无和气,人心不可一日无喜神。

16. In the midst of fierce winds and heavy rain, birds are mournful; in the clear and sunny days, plants and trees thrive. It is evident that the heavens and earth cannot do without harmony even for a single day, and people cannot do without joy for even a single day.

17. 君子之心事,天青日白;不可使人不知;君子之才华,玉韫珠藏,不可使人易知。

17. The heart of a gentleman is as clear as the azure sky and bright as the sun; it should not be kept from people's knowledge. The talents of a gentleman are like precious stones hidden in jade, and they should not be easily known by others.

18. 君子而诈善,无异小人之肆恶;君子而改节,不及小人之自新。

18. If a gentleman pretends to be good-natured, it is no different from a small man's indulgence in evil; if a gentleman changes his ways, it is not as commendable as a small man's self-improvement.

19. 完名美节不宜独任,分些与人可以远害全身;辱行污名,不宜全推,引些归己可以韬光养德。

19. It is not advisable to undertake the "Perfect Beauty Festival" alone; sharing some of the responsibilities can help avoid harm and ensure one's safety. As for disgraceful conduct and infamous reputation, it is not appropriate to shift the blame entirely; taking some responsibility for oneself can help cultivate modesty and virtue.

20. 重新审视自己的曾国藩,在理学上,拜倭仁,唐鉴为师,虚心请教;在官场上,善待同僚,礼贤下士。在生活上,谦虚谨慎,处事平和。

20. Re-examine his own Zeng Guofan: in terms of Neo-Confucianism, he respectfully learns from teachers like Wei Ren and Tang Jian; in official circles, he treats his colleagues kindly and respects the virtuous and the learned; in life, he is modest and cautious, and handles matters with composure.

21. 大意人情冷暖是变化无常的,人生道路是崎岖不平的。因此,当你遇到走不通的路时,必须明白退一步的作人方法;当你事业一帆风顺时,一定要有把好处让三分给他人的胸襟和美德。

21. People's feelings towards others are changeable and unpredictable, and the path of life is rugged and uneven. Therefore, when you encounter a dead-end road, you must understand the art of stepping back in your approach to people; and when your career is going smoothly, you must cultivate the virtue of sharing the benefits with others and giving a third of it.

22. 身居政职的人,要保持一种隐居山林淡泊名利的思想;身为平民居住在田园中的人,必须要胸怀治理国家的雄心壮志。

22. Those in political positions should maintain an ascetic mindset, embracing seclusion in the mountains and rivers, and a detachment from fame and fortune; while common folk living in rural areas must harbor ambitions and aspirations for governing the state.

23. 一个人的幸福莫过于无事牵挂的了,一个人的灾祸没有比疑神疑鬼更可怕的了。只有那些整天忙忙碌碌的人,才知道没有事是最大的幸福,只有那些经常心如止水的人,才知道多心病是最大的灾祸。

23. The greatest happiness for a person is to have nothing to worry about, and the greatest disaster for a person is to be overly suspicious. Only those who are busy all day long know that having nothing to do is the greatest happiness, and only those who often have a tranquil heart know that the greatest disaster is the anxiety of illness and death.

24. 大意要想成为一个很会作人的人,并不是要懂得什么高深的大道理,只要能摆脱世俗的利欲就可跻身名流;要想求到很高深的学问,并不需要特殊的秘诀,只要能排除干扰、宁静心情的杂念就可超凡入圣。

24. To become a very adept at socializing, one does not need to understand any profound great principles; merely by shedding worldly desires, one can ascend to the ranks of the elite. To seek very profound knowledge, there is no need for any special secrets; it is enough to exclude distractions and quiet one's mind of impure thoughts in order to transcend ordinary beings.

25. 奢者富而不足,何如俭者贫而有余;能者劳而府怨,何如拙者逸而全真。

25. The rich are opulent yet lack something, how much better it is for the thrifty who are poor yet have enough; the capable are toil and court resentment, how much better it is for the clumsy who are at ease and preserve their integrity.

26. 大意:每个人的心灵深处都有一部好文章,可惜却被内容不健全的杂乱文章给封闭了;每个人的心灵深处都有一首美妙的乐曲,可惜却被一些妖邪的歌声和艳丽的舞蹈所埋没了。所以一个有学问的读书人,必须排除一切外来物欲的引诱,直接用自己的智慧寻求本性,如此才能求得一生受用不尽的真学问。

26. Summary: Deep within each person's soul lies a good article, but it is unfortunately blocked by chaotic writings with incomplete content; deep within each person's soul lies a wonderful melody, but it is buried by some evil songs and dazzling dances. Therefore, a scholarly reader must reject all external desires and temptations, directly seeking the essence of their nature with their own wisdom, in order to gain an unending true knowledge that is beneficial throughout their life.

27. 蔾口苋肠者,多冰清玉洁;衮衣玉食者,甘婢膝奴颜。盖志以澹泊明,而节从肥甘丧也。

27. Those who eat grass and are pure, are often described as having the clarity of ice and the purity of jade; while those who live in luxury and dine on delicacies, are willing to bow down and adopt the demeanor of a servant or slave. It is because the will is clarified through simplicity and moderation, while the spirit is lost in indulgence and sweetness.

28. 大意一个有高深修养的君子,他的心地像青天白日一般光明,没有一点不可告人之事;一个有高深修养的君子,他的才学像珍珠美玉一般珍藏,绝对不轻易让人知道。

28. A gentleman with profound cultivation has a heart as bright as the blue sky and white sun, with no hidden matters that cannot be disclosed; a gentleman with profound cultivation has his talents and knowledge as treasured as pearls and jade, and he never readily lets others know them.

29. 大意:人情冷暖是变化无常的,人生道路是崎岖不平的。因此,当你遇到走不通的路时,必须明白退一步的作人方法;当你事业一帆风顺时,一定要有把好处让三分给他人的胸襟和美德。

29. Translation: The warmth and coldness of human relationships are ever-changing, and the path of life is uneven and rugged. Therefore, when you encounter a dead-end road, you must understand the method of stepping back in your approach to people; when your career goes smoothly, you must always have the breadth of mind and virtue to let three parts of the benefits to others.

30. 大意:豪奢的人财富再多也感到不够用,这如何比得上贫穷节俭而有赢余的人呢;有才干之人心力交瘁反而招致大众怨恨,如何比得上愚笨的人安闲无事而能保全纯真本性呢。

30. Translation: The wealthy and luxurious may feel that their wealth is never enough, how can they compare to the poor and thrifty who have a surplus? The talented may be exhausted and instead attract public resentment, how can they be compared to the foolish who are carefree and can preserve their genuine nature?

31. 大意:假如要问我们的祖先是否给我们留下有恩德,就要看看我们现在生活所享受的程度是否高,假如确实高,那就算祖先累积下了恩德,我们就要感谢祖先当年留下这些德泽的不易;假如我们要问我们的子孙将来是否能生活幸福,就必须先看看自己给子孙留下的德泽究竟有多少,假如我们给子孙留下的恩惠很少,就要想到子孙势将无法守成而容易使家业衰败。

31. Translation: If we were to ask whether our ancestors have left us with benefits, we should look at the extent to which we currently enjoy a high standard of living. If indeed it is high, then we can attribute it to the accumulated benefits from our ancestors, and we should be grateful for the difficulties our ancestors faced in leaving behind such virtuousness. If we were to inquire about whether our descendants will be able to live a happy life in the future, we must first consider how much virtuousness we have left for our descendants. If the benefits we leave behind are few, we should think that our descendants may not be able to maintain what they inherit and are more likely to see the decline of the family business.

32. 大意:一个真正廉洁的人不与人争名,反而建立不起廉洁之名,那些到处树立名望的人,正是为了贪图虚名才这样做。一个真正聪明的人不炫耀自己的才华,所以看上去反而很笨拙,那些卖弄自己聪明智慧的人,正是为了掩饰自己的愚蠢才这样做。

32. Translation: A truly upright person does not vie for fame, and thus cannot establish a reputation for uprightness; those who seek fame everywhere do so out of a desire for empty glory. A truly intelligent person does not炫耀 their talents, which makes them seem rather clumsy; those who show off their cleverness and wisdom are actually trying to cover up their own foolishness.

33. 别人富有我坚守仁德,别人有爵禄我坚守正义,所以一个有守有为的君子决不会为统治者的高官厚禄所收买。人的智慧一定能胜大自然,意念可转变受到蒙蔽的气质,所以一个有才德的君子决不会向命运低头。

33. While others are rich, I hold fast to benevolence; while others have titles and rewards, I hold fast to justice. Thus, a gentleman who is both steadfast and active will never be bought over by the ruler's high positions and great wealth. Human wisdom is sure to overcome nature, and intention can transform the obscured temperament. Therefore, a gentleman with talent and virtue will never bow to fate.

34. 大意当责备别人的过错时,不可太严厉,要顾及到对方是否能接受,不要伤害对方的自尊心。当教诲别人行善时,不可以希望太高,要顾及到对方是否能做到。

34. When blaming others for their faults, one should not be too severe, and consideration should be given to whether the other person can accept it, so as not to hurt their self-esteem. When teaching others to do good, one should not have too high expectations, and consideration should be given to whether the other person can actually accomplish it.

35. 立身不高一步立,如尘里振衣,泥中灌足,如何超远;处世不退一步处,如飞鹅投烛,羝羊触藩,如何安乐。

35. If one does not elevate oneself a step higher, then it's like shaking one's clothes in the dust or washing one's feet in mud, how can one transcend to a distant place? If one does not retreat a step in dealing with the world, then it's like a wild goose throwing itself at a candle or a ram butting against a fence, how can one find peace and comfort?
