At the peak of life, self-discipline, resilience, and perseverance pave the way to success. Every launch of a dream is a challenge to oneself, and a hope for the future.

1. The highest level of self-discipline in life lies in refraining from lust, contention, and greed.

2. In one's youth, when the blood and qi have not yet matured, one should strictly avoid sexual desires. At this stage when the kidney qi is not yet full and the骨髓 has not filled, it is the key period for growing physically and intellectually. If one is not cautious and indulges in desire, it is as if cutting down the tree of life, either harming the body or destroying one's virtue, and also wasting the prime of one's life, which may lead to a lifetime of accomplishing nothing. "Desire" not only refers to sexual desire but also includes all kinds of human temptations.

3. On another day, when the donkey brayed, the tiger was greatly frightened and ran away, thinking that it was about to bite him, and was very scared. However, upon going back and forth to inspect it, it noticed no special abilities, and gradually became accustomed to its sound. It approached and retreated several times, but never dared to attack. As it grew closer, it became more familiar and even dared to lean against and charge at it. The donkey could not bear the anger any longer and kicked it with its hooves. The tiger was delighted and thought to itself, "Its skill is limited to this!" Then it leaped up and roared loudly, severed its throat, ate all its flesh, and then left.

4. Liu Zongyuan wrote an allegorical fable called "The Story of the Ant-like Insect". There is a small insect called the "ant-like insect" which is extremely greedy. Whenever it sees something, it will grab it and place it on its back. The things on its back have accumulated so much that it has become limping, yet it still continues to pile on more things.

5. One of the weaknesses of human nature is the inability to bear others being better than oneself. We always want to surpass others through our own efforts or other means.

6. The more things you own, the heavier the burden, and the more constraints your soul faces. Learning to let go, go with the flow, maintain a tranquil mind with few desires, not being bound by fame and wealth, and not seeking烦恼 in the midst of fear of loss and gain, is the most superior way of life.

7. People live for themselves; why should they live according to others' eyes? Constantly comparing oneself with others is essentially a struggle with oneself, leading to a downward spiral into the abyss of suffering.

8. This text mentions the whole life of a person. In the youth, one should refrain from being tempted by all kinds of things, learn to make choices, and not be easily deceived by objects. In the youth, with strong blood and vigor, one should not be eager to fight when facing things, but rather calm down and think about it, doing threefold consideration before acting. In old age, with abundant life experiences, one needs to immerse oneself in the present, refrain from greed. Often, it is the greed that ruins a person's whole life. Be content with what one has, accomplish what one is capable of, and do not overly pursue, nor be greedy for things that do not belong to you.

9. In old age, when one's vital energy has declined, it is more important for a person to maintain a calm and composed mind and to correctly treat gains and losses. Because the brilliant stage of a person's life has gradually passed, one cannot always live in the glory of the past. One should treat the gains and losses of life with a calm attitude, live a happy life, and enjoy the years of longevity.

10. The root of all unhappiness in life is due to too many desires. If there is a Peach Blossom Spring in one's heart, where is not a place of water and clouds. If one's heart is always filled with all sorts of desires, everywhere is an unending hell, unbearable in suffering.

11. Understanding the art of forbearance is the key to attaining. Only those who practice self-discipline can truly be free. Let us encourage each other.

12. Therefore, the rats informed each other, and they all came to the house of Mr. So, and they ate to their fill without any trouble. Mr. So's house had no complete utensils, and the racks were without a complete set of clothes; their food and drink were mostly leftovers from the rats. During the day, they would move about with people, but at night, they would stealthily gnaw and fight, making a myriad of sounds that made it impossible to sleep; yet, they never seemed to tire of it.

13. When it comes to the word "abstinence" and "sex," your first reaction might be the story of Zhu Bajie in "Journey to the West," who was named Bajie after teasing the Moon Goddess; or the scene in "Fist of Legend" starring Jet Li, where he couldn't stay with the shepherdess and eventually left a cautious scar. Confucius is talking about the meaning of "young" here, referring to us as spirited young people or longing young girls. We have ambiguous and beautiful daydreams about the opposite sex. This is a normal physiological phenomenon. But if you become overly immersed in imagining the opposite sex, you will make a big mistake, at least harming your body, and irreversibly altering the path of your life.

14. Human desires are endless, and the renunciation of "passion" in youth is actually a form of life attitude characterized by moderation. Because of moderation, one is calm; because of simplicity, one is happy. Therefore, we can finally understand Confucius' praise of Yan Hui: "With only a bowl of food and a scoop of drink, in a dilapidated alley, others cannot bear the distress, but Hui does not change his joy." A shabby little house, a bowl of food, a scoop of water...

15. As a result, the ant-like creature was overburdened and fell into the valley, where it breathed its last.

16. At 90, it's time to be hung on the wall.

17. After three years, the elk went out and saw a large number of wild dogs on the path, and wanted to play with them. The wild dogs saw this and were both happy and angry, and they all killed and ate the elk, leaving a mess on the path. The elk died without understanding what had happened.

18. As far as I know, "abstaining from lust" should refer to the fact that if one is overly indulged in daydreams about the opposite sex during youth, it can lead to great mistakes. The consequences can be mild, such as harming one's own body, or severe, with irreversible changes to the trajectory of one's life. Therefore, Confucius' three warnings for gentlemen: young men should abstain from lust, middle-aged men should abstain from disputes, and elderly men should abstain from greed, with abstaining from lust being the first on the list.

19. There was no donkey in Qiannan, but a well-intentioned person loaded one onto a boat to bring it in. When it arrived, it was of no use, so it was set free on the mountain. The tiger saw it and thought it was a divine creature. It hid in the woods to watch it, and gradually approached it, but neither of them knew each other well.

20. No matter how formidable a person may be, they must let go of their greed in order to live a free and beautiful life.

21. By giving up the desire for possession, we can live a better life.

22. It is merely to show off their sense of superiority that they are willing to be extravagant, luxurious, and licentious to an intolerable degree.

23. A man living by the river once hunted a fawn and kept it. Upon entering the house, the dogs drooled with longing, wagging their tails and coming towards him. The man was angry and scared, but from that day on, he held the fawn close to the dogs, teaching them and gradually letting them play together. Over time, the dogs became as the man wished. As the fawn grew older, it forgot that it was a fawn, thinking that the dogs were good friends to it, and it became more intimate with them, often pushing and falling. The dogs, however, respected the master and played with the fawn very well. But sometimes the fawn would bite its own tongue.

24. The Analects says: "A gentleman does not seek to be well-fed, nor does he seek comfort in his dwelling." The clothing and food should not be luxurious, as long as they meet the basic needs for a normal life, that is enough. Confucius lost his father at the age of three and his mother at the age of seventeen. He also had an older brother who was disabled and needed his care. Although life was hard, the young boy was determined to pursue knowledge and was content with poverty and the path of righteousness: "Eat vegetables, drink water, lean on the crooked arm and rest my head on it, and joy is found within. Wealth and honor gained through injustice are as fleeting as clouds to me."

25. At 60 years old, once retired, your political career comes to an end. People will no longer call you by your title, but instead by your personal name, like Old Zhao or Old Li. You should learn to accept this.

26. After several years, a certain family moved to another province. When later generations moved in, the rats continued to act as they had before. The person said, "These are evil creatures of the shadowy kind, they are especially greedy and violent, and how have they come to be so numerous?" They borrowed five or six cats, closed the doors, removed the tiles to pour water into the holes, and hired a boy to catch them. They killed the rats by the heap, and discarded them in a hidden place, and the smell (from the dead above) lasted for several months before it subsided.

27. At 70 years old, you no longer have a circle of friends, loneliness is the norm of life, you need to learn to embrace it.

28. To others, such a life seems dull and unremarkable. However, this is the entirety of Yan Hui's life. Days lived like a mendicant did not bring him sorrow; instead, he faced them with a positive and sunny attitude, leading a happier and more carefree life. Pursuit of pleasure only strengthens desires continuously, and the mind can easily become lost.

29. In the prime of life after the age of thirty, when one is full of vigor and blood, they are prone to disputes over emotions, reputation, wealth, face, and women (or men). Most of these disputes are emotional rather than rational, and one should endeavor to avoid such conflicts. If one is overly bold and aggressive, they might meet an untimely death due to a moment of anger, or even lead to social unrest through resorting to weapons.

30. There was a person named Yong You, who was extremely afraid of the sun and had numerous taboos. He believed that his year of birth was the sign of the son, which is represented by the rat, and therefore revered the rat. As a result, he did not keep cats or dogs, and he forbade the servants to kill rats. He allowed the rats to roam freely in granaries, storehouses, and kitchens without any interference.

31. As I grow older, I suddenly realize that the辟邪剑谱 is an allegory. One must strictly control one's desires, free oneself from the obsession with sensual pleasures, in order to connect with the powerful energy of the universe and the cosmos, and achieve great undertakings. If one is always preoccupied with trivial matters below the waist, with one's mind wandering and restless, how can one concentrate and overcome difficulties?

32. At 80 years old, even your family doesn't want to bother with you anymore, and you've also learned to let go.

33. This must be about the specific method of celibacy. Confucian thought emphasizes self-discipline and peace. After cultivating one's self and refining one's character, the next step is to manage the household and then govern the country and maintain peace in the world. Therefore, the color of the ring here differs from that of the rings in Buddhism, as it does not indicate the gender of women. Generally speaking, celibacy indeed means that men need to control their seminal fluids after they reach maturity. They should adhere to the physiological laws and never overexert. Otherwise, it will have very negative effects on the body. Confucius also hopes that the majority of young people can invest their energy in studying and working. Once entering a virtuous cycle, there will be abundant fruits of life waiting for you to harvest in the near future.

34. In my youth, while watching "The Smiling, Proud Wanderer," I mocked those who were desperately searching for the辟邪剑谱 (Bi Xie Sword Manual), because it was said, "To practice this skill, one must first castrate oneself." It was believed that without cutting off the root of one's life and completely renouncing sexual desires, it was impossible to master such an extraordinary martial art skill.

35. Alas, the grandeur of its form resembles that of a noble, and the loudness of its voice suggests a powerful presence. If it had not displayed its prowess, even though the tiger is ferocious, it would have been suspicious and fearful and would not have dared to take it on. Now, however, this is what has happened. What a tragedy!

36. Abstaining from lust is the beginning of a person's path to success.

38. During the Western Jin Dynasty, the minister Shi Chong and his mother-in-law's brother Wang Kai engaged in a competition of wealth. After dinner, Wang Kai used sugar water to wash his pots, and Shi Chong responded by burning candles as firewood; Wang Kai made a purple silk curtain barrier for forty miles, and Shi Chong made a brocade curtain barrier for fifty miles; Shi Chong painted the walls with red stone wax, and Wang Kai replied by using Sichuan pepper.

39. Everyone has a sense of comparison.

40. When we talk about youth, it generally refers to the period from childhood to the middle of youth. During this time, the physical and mental development of a person will show secondary characteristics, with these secondary signs gradually emerging, and accompanied by adolescent restlessness. When he is young, his blood and qi are not yet stable, so he should beware of indulging in desires; 2. When he is strong, his blood and qi are vigorous, so he should beware of fighting; 3. When he is old, his blood and qi have declined, so he should beware of greed.
