1. 无狎其所居,无厌其所生。夫唯不厌,是以不厌。是以圣人自知不自见;自爱不自贵。故去彼取此。
1. Do not crowd where they live, do not burden what they produce. It is only by not burdening that they are not burdensome. Therefore, the wise know themselves but do not exalt themselves; they love themselves but do not value themselves. Therefore, they discard the former and embrace the latter.
2. 其政闷闷,其民淳淳;其政察察,其民缺缺。是以圣人方而不割,廉而不刿,直而不肆,光而不耀。
2. When the government is oppressive, the people are sincere and simple; when the government is vigilant, the people are weary and dissatisfied. Therefore, the sage is straightforward without being harsh, honest without being abrasive, forthright without being arbitrary, and radiant without being dazzling.
3. 天下之至柔,驰骋天下之至坚。
3. The utmost gentleness in the world can gallop through the utmost hardness in the world.
4. 译文你不知道那个螳螂吗?舞起它那两把大刀式的胳臂,妄图挡住滚滚前进的车轮。它不了解自己的力量是根本无法胜任的,却自以为是地认为自己的本领很强大。成语"螳臂当车"的典故由此而来,用以比喻不自量力。
4. Translation: Do you not know that mantis? With its two big, scissor-like arms, it tries to block the rolling wheel of progress. It does not understand that its strength is completely inadequate, yet it mistakenly believes that its abilities are very strong. 10. 慎终如始,则无败事。

14. 金玉满堂,莫之能守;富贵而骄,自遗其咎。功成身退,天之道。
14. A house filled with gold and jade, no one can guard it; becoming wealthy and proud, one brings upon oneself misfortune. Achieving success and then stepping back, this is the way of heaven.
15. 不言之教,无为之益,天下希及之。
15. The unspoken teaching, the benefits of doing nothing, are rarely matched by the world.
16. 之棰,日取其半,万世不竭。?>
16. The rod, if taken in half each day, will never be exhausted for ten thousand generations.
17. 出自《淮南子·缪利训》。译文君子想的是义而不考虑利,小人贪的是利而不顾道义。这句话是说君子和小人在义、利方面的不同态度,前者舍利取义,后者舍义取利。

19. My words are very easy to understand, and very easy to practice. But in the world, no one can understand them, no one can practice them.
20. 是以圣人抱一为天下式。不自见,故明;不自是,故彰;不自伐,故有功;不自矜,故长。夫唯不争,故天下莫能与之争。
20. Therefore, the sage holds to the unity as the model for the world. Not seeing oneself as better, he is thus enlightened; not asserting his own correctness, he is thereby distinguished; not boasting, he achieves great accomplishments; not prideful, he endures. It is only by not engaging in conflict that the world cannot compete with him.
21. 小国寡民。使有什伯之器而不用;使民重死而不远徙。虽有舟舆,无所乘之,虽有甲兵,无所陈之。使民复结绳而用之。
21. Small nations with few people. Make them have the tools of ten and a hundred but not use them; make the people hold life dear and not migrate far. Even if they have boats and carriages, there will be nothing to ride in; even if they have armor and weapons, there will be nowhere to display them. Make the people go back to using knots in ropes.
22. 夫轻诺必寡信,多易必多难。是以圣人犹难之,故终无难矣。
22. One who makes light promises is likely to have few who trust them, and one who undertakes too much will encounter many difficulties. Therefore, the wise person regards even what seems easy as difficult, and thus they encounter no difficulties at all.
23. 太上,不知有之;其次,亲而誉之;其次,畏之;其次,侮之。信不足焉,有不信焉。
23. The highest excellence is not to be aware that there is such a thing; the next lower is to love it and praise it; the next lower is to fear it; the lowest is to despise it. Where there is insufficient faith, there is also disbelief.
24. 始制有名,名亦既有,夫亦将知止,知止可以不殆。
24. The origin of a thing has a name, and once the name is established, one should also know when to stop. Knowing when to stop can prevent danger.
25. 出自《淮南子·说山训》。译文沮舍,破败的房舍。倚墙,倾斜的墙壁。破败的房舍之下不能坐,倾斜的墙壁旁边不能站。对于危险的环境要有意识地规避,以防对生命有不必要的威胁。

26. Cherish everything you have, for every day you live is a blessing. When you cry and say you have no shoes to wear, think of those who have no feet; when you sigh that the world is too boring, think of those who have never seen this world at all; when you dislike your parents' nagging, think of those who are orphans. In a world without complaints, you will find that you are already very blessed.
27. 圣人无常心,以百姓心为心。善者,吾善之;不善者,吾亦善之;德善。
27. The sage has no fixed mind, taking the heart of the people as his own. To the good, I am good; to the not-good, I am also good; thus, I have virtue.
28. 难事必作于易,天下大事必作于细。
28. Difficult tasks must be tackled from the easy, and great matters in the world must be addressed in detail.
29. 译文让人民吃得香甜,穿得漂亮,住得安适,满意于他们的平凡生活。国与国之间相互得见,鸡犬之声相互听得见,而人民从生到死,也互不往来。
29. Translation: Make the people enjoy sweet food, beautiful clothes, comfortable housing, and be satisfied with their ordinary lives. Countries see each other, and the sounds of chickens and dogs can be heard from one another, but the people do not interact with each other from birth to death.
30. 飘风不终朝,骤雨不终日。
30. The gale does not last until morning, and the heavy rain does not last until night.
31. 译文最有智慧的人,总会表现出豁达大度之态;小有才气的人,总爱为微小的是非而斤斤计较。合乎大道的言论,其势如燎原烈火,既美好又盛大,让人听了心悦诚服。那些耍小聪明的言论,琐琐碎碎,废话连篇。
31. The wisest among us always exhibit a magnanimous demeanor; those with a bit of talent are often overly concerned with trivial matters. Words that conform to the great path are like raging fires that spread, both beautiful and grand, leaving those who hear them deeply convinced. Words that show off trivial cleverness are trivial, trivial, and filled with nonsense.
32. 福之所倚,福兮祸之所伏。

34. Don't overfill your life with activities, and don't overly crowd your plans for life. Whatever you do, always leave yourself some room to turn around with ease. Leave some benefits for others to enjoy, some paths for others to walk, and some time for yourself to think. At any time, remember to leave some room for life, not to be overly aggressive, not to be despondent, not to be overly anxious, not to be lenient, not to be overly pleased when you gain, and not to be overly despondent when you lose, maintaining composure and calmness between gains and losses.
35. 译文最上乘的统治者没有个人主观成见,总是习惯于把百姓的意向作为自己的意向。善良的人我用善良的心去对待,不善良的人我也用善良的心去对待,就会让所有的人一心向善。
35. The highest-class rulers have no personal subjective biases and are always accustomed to treating the will of the people as their own. I treat the good-hearted people with a kind heart, and I also treat the unkind-hearted people with a kind heart, thus leading everyone to pursue goodness with one heart.
36. 译文天下没有比水更柔弱的了。然而能攻坚克强的力量没有能胜过水的。没有别的东西能改变它、代替它。弱能胜强,柔能胜刚,天下没有不懂,却不能实现。
36. Translation: There is nothing in the world softer than water. However, there is no force stronger than water in breaking through obstacles and overcoming strength. There is nothing else that can change it or replace it. Weakness can overcome strength, and softness can overcome hardness. The world understands this, yet it is not realized.
37. 有物混成,先天地生。寂兮寥兮,独立而不改,周行而不殆,可以为天地母。吾不知其名,强字之曰道,强为之名曰大。大曰逝,逝曰远,远曰反。
37. There is a thing that is mixed and formed, and it exists before heaven and earth. It is silent and vast, standing independently and unchanging, and moving around without danger. It can be regarded as the mother of heaven and earth. I do not know its name, so I arbitrarily call it 'the Way,' and arbitrarily name it 'the Great.' The Great is ever moving, the moving is ever distant, and the distant returns.
38. “得”是一种本事,“舍”是一门学问。没有能力的人得不到,没有悟性的人舍不得。舍得金钱,才能赢得自己,主宰生活;舍得功名,才能静下心来,顺其自然品味人生。痛苦是因为舍不得,幸福是因为舍得;忧郁是因为舍不得,快乐是因为舍得。舍得之妙,妙在微言大义;舍得之精,精在有舍有得。
38. "Gain" is a skill, "letting go" is a discipline. Those without the ability cannot gain, and those without insight will not let go. Only by letting go of money can one win oneself and master life; only by letting go of fame and fortune can one settle down and naturally savor life. Suffering comes from not letting go, and happiness comes from letting go; melancholy comes from not letting go, and joy comes from letting go. The wonder of letting go lies in its profound meaning in a few words; the subtlety of letting go lies in having both giving and receiving.

46. Do not exalt the wise, so that the people will not compete; do not value rare goods, so that the people will not steal; do not show things that are desirable, so that the hearts of the people will not be confused.
47. 译文用火来救火,用水来救水,这样做不但不能匡正,反而会增加(卫君的)过错。假借孔子教导颜回的话,来阐明一种处世之道。成语以火救火、以水救水出此。

50. Don't rely on others, there are no free shoulders; don't retreat, there are many who will kick you when you're down; don't bow your head, for there is no gold on the ground, only garbage. Accept your imperfect self, comfort yourself in solitude; warm yourself in loneliness. On the bumpy journey, offer warmth to those around you; in the stormy life, give yourself a smile. The world is vast, there's no need to twist yourself into a corner. If you can't fit into a world, don't force yourself; change your perspective, and you'll be able to achieve more.
51. 甚爱大费, 多藏厚亡。
51. The more one loves great expenditure, the more they will accumulate and the greater the loss.
52. 道生之,德畜之,物形之,势成之。是以万物莫不尊道而贵德。
52. The Tao gives birth to it, De nourishes it, matter shapes it, and circumstances bring it to completion. Therefore, all things reverence the Tao and value De.

Hence, the Way gives birth to it, virtue accumulates it; it nourishes and educates it; ripens and perfects it; nurtures and protects it. 56. 谷神不死,是谓玄牝。玄牝之门,是谓天地根。绵绵若存,用之不勤。
56. The God of grain does not die, which is called the mysterious vulva. The gate of the mysterious vulva is called the root of heaven and earth. It exists continuously as if it is always present, yet it is not used tirelessly.
57. 居善地,心善渊,与善仁,言善信,政善治,事善能,动善时。夫唯不争,故无尤。
57. Live in a good place, have a profound heart, be benevolent with those who are good, speak with sincerity, govern with good governance, perform duties with ability, and act at the right time. Only by not competing does one avoid blame.
58. 为无为,事无事,味无味。大小多少,报怨以德。图难于其易,为大于其细。天下难事,必作于易;天下大事,必作于细。
58. Act without action, manage without doing, savor without taste. Embrace simplicity in both the great and the small, and respond to resentment with virtue. Plan for the difficult in the midst of the easy, and achieve the great through the small. The most difficult things in the world must be done by starting with the easy, and the greatest tasks must be accomplished by paying attention to the details.
59. 静胜躁,寒胜热。清静为天下正。
59. Tranquility prevails over restlessness, cold over heat. Serenity is the standard for the world.
