12. Traditional classics and modern civilization are perfectly integrated here. When we go up to the rooftop, we ride an elevator. Stepping out of the elevator, perhaps due to the height, we suddenly have the feeling of "standing on the peak to survey all the mountains below"! To the southeast, there is a distinctly visible grey-tiled tower. Brother Cao, with his wide knowledge and profound learning, says that it is the Shaolin Temple Relic Tower, which collapsed once in the 1980s. The one we see now should be the reconstructed one. The original name of the Shaolin Temple was Ayutthaya Temple. After the cremation of the body of Sakyamuni, the ashes formed relics. In the 3rd century AD, King Ashoka unified India and, to promote Buddhism, divided the relics into several parts and sent them to various parts of the world to build towers for worship. In China, there are a total of nineteen such places, and the Shaolin Temple is the fifth. The original Shaolin Temple Tower was a four-story wooden tower with an underground palace, which not only contained the relics but also had gold and silver, utensils, robes, and brocades bestowed by the Tang emperor. The newly built tower is a brick-built pavilion with a flat octagonal structure, thirteen stories high, over sixty meters tall. The images on the tower are solemn and majestic, with exquisite craftsmanship, making it a rare highlight of this Shaolin Buddhist sacred site!

14. ❷ An intense storm raged within my heart, yet my face remained as clear as a blue sky.
15. Winding paths through flower-bedecked gardens, with the ethereal sound of Buddhist chants; the stream of people like shuttlecocks, corridors winding around the hall. Following the trace of the monk in a green robe, we walked a distance and arrived at the underground palace beneath the Temple of Manjushri. A group of tourists were gathered around a hole, with a young man dressed like a tour guide explaining to them, and I joined them as well. The entrance to the cave was sealed with sturdy plexiglass. In 873 AD, Emperor Yi Zong of the Tang Dynasty prayed to the Buddha for protection, and it was from here that the Buddha's relic was retrieved to be worshipped in Chang'an. Unfortunately, the ritual had not yet concluded when the emperor fell ill and passed away! The first thing that Emperor Xie Zong, who succeeded him, did was to respectfully escort the Buddha's relic back to the Temple of Manjushri. In 874 AD, along with the sound of reciting scriptures, the Buddha's bone relic and thousands of rare treasures were sealed into the underground palace, and offered by the Tang Dynasty's esoteric Mandala ceremony. From then on, the Tang Dynasty's 242-year-old practice of welcoming and sending the Buddha's relic came to an end with the locking of the iron chain. That moment, the rare treasures and the Buddha's bone relic were sealed away in the earth for a long time! It was not until 1987 that, during the restoration of the pagoda, workers accidentally discovered a slab of white jade under the loose earth. After meticulous and in-depth excavation by the cultural relics department, the secret of 1000 years ago finally had the chance to see the light of day! Through the glass, it was clearly visible that the cave entrance was only large enough for one person to bend down and pass through, inside there were a series of small doors. Near the exit lay a square brick of green color, worn and chipped. The guide explained that it was used to seal the cave entrance in those days.

17. "The Flowers of Shanghai" from 1998 is a lavish yet decadent work, rumored to have been entirely filmed on location in a brothel in Taiwan. The art department went to great lengths to find "useless things" that could reflect the traces of life. "The Flowers of Shanghai," or "Shanghai flowers," refer to the famous courtesans who eke out a living in the Shanghai International Settlement. Unfortunately, they are locked away in the flower room, left to wait for the most beautiful blooming season to pass by, even though they are courted and doted upon, they are still solitary; luxurious, yet decadent. It's truly unimaginable that Hou Hsiao-hsien, filming the story of old Shanghai, could be so calm and reserved. It is also rumored that Hou Hsiao-hsien's response to a journalist's question about the temporal and spatial limitations of "The Flowers of Shanghai" was: "...Viewing the lives of the prostitutes from a calm and objective perspective, so I deliberately did not shoot any exterior scenes, because they are trapped in this situation and cannot escape. In fact, everyone is, they are born into this society and cannot escape." Such a statement is really cool.

24. By the gate of the famous tourist attraction, the Mahayana Temple, it was already past noon. At that time, the wind was clear, the clouds were light, the sun was warm, and the trees in the parking lot had already turned a light yellow-green. At first glance, it seemed as if the branches were wrapped in a light green downy fabric. The flowers in the green belt were blooming beautifully, and the willow branches fluttered gently. Standing still, everything within sight was a scene full of spring vitality!
25. At the northernmost end of the Buddha Light Avenue stands the world-famous "Famen Temple Hand-in-Hand Sutra Tower." The tower is 148 meters tall, shaped like the classic hands-together gesture of Buddhist disciples, with the tips of the fingers pointing towards the sky, and a precious tower containing the Buddha's finger relics resting between the palms. It is said that this massive structure was not cheap in cost and took many years to complete, designed by the famous Taiwanese engineer Master Li Zuyuan. We climbed the steps and entered the grand hall beneath the tower, where the Maitreya Buddha statue was carved from granite, adorned with platinum, resplendent with gold and magnificent in its grandeur! What is even more astonishing is that every inch of its "skin" is carved with small Buddha figures, with intricate patterns and lifelike depictions, countless in number! Not far from the left side is the "Transcription Hall," where there are about five or six children around ten years old, kneeling and crawling on stools writing something. Upon learning more, we found out that these were some devout Buddhist believers who sent their children who were fond of playing and disliked studying here, forcing them to copy traditional classics such as "Three Characters Classic" and "Disciple's Code" in the hope of making them "regain their focus," ultimately reforming and achieving the purpose of education! Whether it is effective or not is another matter. While I silently sighed in my heart at the "pitiful hearts of all parents in the world," I also marveled at the profound and profound traditional culture of our Chinese nation!

31. Hou Hsiao-hsien, from Meizhou, Guangdong. In 1948, Hou Hsiao-hsien, who was less than half a year old, moved to Hualien, Taiwan with his family from Meizhou, Guangdong. Originally, his family intended to stay temporarily, but unfortunately, due to political reasons, they were unable to return to their homeland, thus it can be said that Hou Hsiao-hsien grew up in Taiwan: "The following summer after his father passed away at the age of twelve, after lunch, young Hou Hsiao-hsien, as usual, went barefoot through the back door to the front hall of the magistrate's residence, sitting on the wall to stealthily pick mangoes. Outside the wall was the street. Usually, children would run away after picking the mangoes, but young Hou Hsiao-hsien chose to stay calmly at the spot to enjoy his spoils. The entire street was very desolate. From a distance, the sound of a bicycle struggling to turn its wheels came, so faint that it was impossible to tell where the bicycle was coming from and where it was going. The young Hou Hsiao-hsien sitting on the tree clearly felt the slightly warm wind, the quiet cicada sounds, and human activities. Suddenly, he felt lonely. It seemed as if time and space had all solidified there. This impression remained with him until he grew up and began to create, becoming the most important tone in his works: a旁观者 looking down upon the world. Warm, but with a sense of distance, thus absolutely清醒."
32. After hearing the神奇 history of the treasure cave, take a few steps forward and turn a corner to reach the exhibition hall. The inside is quite dim, perhaps to highlight the exquisite beauty of the exhibits. There is a small candle lamp installed in the glass case of each artifact, which includes bracelets, cups, hairpins, jade articles, basins, as well as everyday utensils like bowls, plates, and dishes, as well as silk, brocade, silk, and paper, etc. The variety is overwhelming, leaving one's eyes unable to take in all at once. The most striking are the seven boxes containing the relics of the Buddha's finger, which are variegated in paint and arranged from largest to smallest in a row, placed inside a trapezoidal large glass case. It is said that when they were unearthed, the relics were placed in the smallest box, with the larger ones containing the smaller ones, and each was locked. I really can't imagine anything more precious that would be so meticulously wrapped, locked, and buried underground for over a thousand years, and then worshipped by later generations with such reverence.

54. After passing through the "Yuanrong Gate," the view suddenly opened up, revealing the core of the Famen Temple tourist attraction - the Buddha Light Avenue. It is an extremely spacious pedestrian path! The outermost part is lush with pines and cypresses, and buildings that are faintly visible. To the right, near the Yuanrong Gate, there are sculptures of the Eighteen Arhats, which have rich expressions and diverse forms, some with angry eyes and fierce expressions, while others are laughing mysteriously! Regarding the various teachings of Buddhism, I have always maintained a distant attitude, neither worshiping nor believing blindly, and have always harbored a grudge against the Eighteen Arhats: They possess an appearance that is repulsive to the eyes, so why do the believers still worship them? At the foot of the statues is a large incense burner, where some people are paying their respects with smoke rising, creating a solemn and solemn atmosphere! Further inside, there are ten statues of bodhisattvas arranged in a row, symmetrically on both sides, each with its own form, dignified and graceful, with kind and benevolent eyes! In front of each statue, there is a long incense burner, next to which is the "merit box." The front of the base of the statues is inscribed with Chinese, English, and Japanese explanations. Remember when I was a child, watching "Journey to the West," whenever Sun Wukong encountered demons he couldn't defeat, the Goddess of Mercy would always appear in time. Based on this youthful sentiment, I became interested in the fifth statue of the "Goddess of Mercy (Great Compassion)" on the eastern side! Upon closer inspection, it is inscribed: "Received the mercy of the Goddess of Mercy, in the next life, will be reborn into the Pure Land of Bliss." Is it true? I am not sure! When I was a child, I thought that Sun Wukong had great magic powers, defeated demons and monsters on the journey to retrieve the scriptures, and eventually achieved enlightenment, becoming the Buddha of Victory. Now that I am nearly fifty years old, I have just learned that "Journey to the West" was just a novel made up by Mr. Wu!
55. After a silence of two years, he finally showcased to the world his masterpiece of extraordinary talent, "A City of Sadness." He successfully transitioned from focusing on the growth process of Taiwan's people's livelihood to addressing social historical issues in a natural way. However, "people" remains the eternal focus of Hou Hsiao-hsien. When it comes to "A City of Sadness," I believe that too many people appreciate and savor it in their own way, and many of its shots have become familiar classics. The elegance and bitterness of "A City of Sadness" leave all who have seen it unable to let go. This is a grand production with historical events as the backdrop, where the camera is still placed on one side of the frame, with a casual and indifferent voice-over, and with a warm, soft, and vivid glow. It's so familiar; everyone in their hearts says, it's still Hou Hsiao-hsien! The sadness in "A City of Sadness" comes from the love that Li Wenqing and Kuanmei hold on to on the edge of time and space, from the tolerance and enthusiasm of the masses as they sing the "Exile Trilogy" with passion, and from the letter that reads, "You must live with dignity, even though my father died in prison, please believe that he was innocent." It also comes from the trampling and neglect of human dignity under the backdrop of history. "A City of Sadness" has become the most painful memory of long-held taboos and fears in the hearts of Taiwanese, where both the official narrative represented by Chen Yi and Kuanmei's diary reveal that the so-called history of Taiwan's liberation is so full of discontinuity and sadness. As for Hou Hsiao-hsien himself, when interviewed, he said, "The aim of this production is not so much to try to annotate the history of Taiwan over the past few decades as it is to sing an old Taiwanese song, whose lyrics are simple and the emotions are direct. Both the singers and the listeners find their own space for self-fulfillment in the song, not as a means of escape, but only as a testament to human resilience."
