Years flow like a song, life like a dream. In this complicated world, everyone is pursuing their own piece of peace and satisfaction. However, there is a kind of life that does not require deliberate pursuit or acquisition; it naturally blooms effortlessly. This is what we call a life of ease.

1. "Time has subjected my heart to varying degrees of pressure amidst the changing cast of characters, and I have had to remain silent, to endure." Many things and people will change subtly under the scourge of time, and recently, I found a classmate from years ago. The excitement I felt at that moment was as if I had returned to the innocent days of childhood. I immediately got in touch and added him on WeChat, exchanged pleasantries about our current situations, and looked back on the past. During the process, I was actually at a loss for words several times. Yes, time has already left our friendship forever frozen at that moment. Up to this day, we have not been involved in each other's lives in this span of time, so how can we understand each other's joys and sorrows? Only when we meet again, how can it not make people nostalgic about where time has gone? Mr. Shen said, "Within ten months, four of my closest friends have passed away. Their deaths are worth commemorating, and the method of commemoration should not be tears, not rituals, nor words." As is the case with friendship, so is it with life, and so too with time.

2. The author particularly likes those sailors, who, every day, engage in a battle of wits and courage with the waves and rocks in the clear Xiangjiang River, wander through landscapes taking their boats as their homes, and treat every friend with complete sincerity. I especially like the story of that sailor friend, after finally stepping onto the shore in the midst of the dazzling world of colorful sights, he used all the money in his pocket to buy the author's favorite oranges.

3. Further on, from "A passionate sailor and a passionate woman" to "History is a river," you will learn that sailors and boatmen earn a meager income while engaging in a hard and life-threatening occupation of navigation. In the winter, when it's as cold as the coldest of the three nine days, they still jump into the water when the boat encounters danger. During the journey, if the boat meets a dangerous rapid and the river is raging, they must dive into the water, risking their lives to protect the boat, day in and day out for ten years. And even so, these sailors and boatmen never lost their due courage and diligence. As for the women on the hanging foot platform, most of them, due to the darkness of this society, still maintain their simplicity and charm, as well as their innocent hope for life.

4. I believe that I was wrong before as well, just as Shen said, we are not mere, pitiable lives, nor are we lives without purpose. Whether it be in nature or in our own lives, we each bear our own share of responsibilities.

5. Goethe once said, "Reading a good book is like conversing with a person of noble character." In my conversation with Mr. Shen Congwen, I seemed to see such a person: sincere in nature, fond of calligraphy and paintings, deeply attached and loving to the Xiangxi region, and carrying the spirit of diligence and industry of the working people. Gazing at Mr. Shen Congwen, I was curious: "In such a dark era, why could the people of Xiangxi maintain such an optimistic attitude towards life?" Mr. Shen Congwen's deep eyes seemed to blink, revealing the light of a wise person, as he said, "Because they possess the indomitable spirit of the working people, and that tenacity which belongs to the children of the Chinese nation!" Indeed, these fine qualities are so rare and so much needed to be learned and passed on by the people of the new era!

6. Zhuangzi's wife passed away, and his friend Hui Zi went to pay his respects. As he pushed open the door, he saw Zhuangzi sitting in the courtyard, joyfully striking a pot with a stick and singing. Hui Zi was extremely angry and accused Zhuangzi of having an iron and stone heart.

7. Faced with various difficulties in learning and life, do I need the perseverance, determination, and courage of the people of Western Hunan to enter Hainan High School and embark on a new learning journey? Initially, I was not adapted to it and encountered many difficulties: the reshuffling of interpersonal relationships, new teachers, new classmates, a new environment, and the surrounding classmates were all top-notch talents selected from a hundred. All of this unconsciously put a lot of pressure on me. However, I did not give up, but instead worked even harder. I believe that effort will not be in vain, and the day when flowers bloom will not be far off. Finally, during the final exam, my grades made a qualitative leap.

8. Looking at those prostitutes, before reading "Xiangxing Sandi", I thought they were shameless, even that their lives were not worth mentioning. But now, my perspective has changed, because in Shen Congwen's writing, their lives are incredibly strong. Do you think it's for money? No, it's not. They give up their precious chastity so that their children can grow up without worrying about food and clothing. Because, they are great mothers!

9. The author of the book frequently mentions "hanging foot houses," and I imagined that perhaps it was a building that was hung in the air. Indeed, the structure is beautiful and pleasing to the eye, with flying pavilions suspended halfway up the mountain, their reflections layered in the emerald waters below. It truly is a beautiful water tower in the Xiang River! How could one not be moved by the beauty, especially on this journey? Mr. Shen is returning to his hometown, and the people and landscapes along the way are bound to touch one's heart and evoke sentiment. Regardless of who lives in the pavilions, they must all possess pure souls, emitting a unique scent of unity with nature. The honest, brave, and hardworking sailors there have spent decades sailing, navigating through countless rapids and crossing numerous ponds. The stories of the affectionate sailors and the warm women in the hanging foot houses are thus naturally formed, as Mr. Shen said, "In my silence, I have tasted a little of the bitterness of 'life.' I feel that their desires and sorrows are sacred, and I am not worthy of using money or other methods to interfere with their fates, disturbing the哀乐 of their lives."

10. This collection of prose makes me feel that the pen is free and the words are delicious. It expresses the author's sentiments of returning to the past through numerous descriptions of landscapes, and also sighs over the change of people and things through letters and memories. By careful reading, it seems that I also understand some of the author's emotions, which is perhaps a sense of life and time. "To talk about the past with acquaintances from another environment and background, and to talk about the future with unfamiliar friends, when the current life is connected with the past and the future, life seems to regain a profound and rich meaning."

11. That year was 1934, the so-called golden age of the Republic of China. Shen Congwen hurried back to Western Hunan to visit his mother, and along the way, the scenery and water were as they always were, but the atmosphere and people were different. That year, carrying a copy of "The Records of the Grand Historian" and three months' salary of 27 yuan, Shen Congwen went north to Beijing for further studies, and in his impression, his hometown was beautiful, the young people were lively and vigorous like tigers, and the villagers were free, sincere, and composed. However, this time, facing the withered beauty of his hometown, Shen Congwen saw people's struggles and the despair of life: there, strong-bodied sailors and boatmen did everything for a meager bit of money, risking their lives - no matter how cold the weather, how dangerous the water, they would still jump into the water. Even so, people like Shen Congwen never complained, never slacked off because of the low pay, and still took on their share of courage and effort. And the women on the bamboo-leg houses often fell into the plight of becoming交际 women for the sake of the family, but they still retained a simplicity and loveliness, as well as a pure hope for life. In Shen Congwen's writing, there is both compassion and admiration for the solemnity of life.

12. Flipping through "Xiangxing Sandi," I was immediately drawn into the true yet fantastical, simple and beautiful world of western Hunan that Mr. Shen Congwen has constructed. This collection of essays was compiled from the author's two returns to western Hunan, and is a travelogue written when the author went back to his hometown in 1934. Amidst the dark times of the 1930s, "Xiangxing Sandi" still manages to bloom with flowers and thrive towards the sun, a truly astonishing sight.

13. The book "Xiangxing Sandi" serves as a mirror, revealing the low status of the working-class people such as sailors and prostitutes during that time, and even their lives are deemed worthless. All of this seems to narrate the sorrow of these individuals. However, when you reach the end, you will undoubtedly understand Shen Congwen's perspective—he is actually praising the noble qualities of these people. These sailors earn only 15 cents a day, and in the eyes of the world, they might appear humble and despicable. But through "Xiangxing Sandi," I see another side of them. Some are deeply emotional and loyal, like the sailor Niu Bao. Despite being with a prostitute, he develops genuine emotions, and even when they part, it is with reluctance.

14. Yang Shen was deeply saddened, his steps unsteady and tears flowing continuously along the way. When passing through Jiangling, Hubei, he looked at the surging and flowing Yangtze River in front of him and remembered the Battle of Red Cliffs and the related figures of the era. Now, they had all turned to dust, blending into the clouds of history and no longer existed. This brought him a sense of inner peace, and he felt deeply moved, writing a word called "Lingjiangxian":

15. Every time I read it, I always feel a sense of enlightenment, but I can't quite put my finger on what it is. Connecting it to real-life situations, I thought of the recent "suicide jumping incident" at Foxconn, as well as the countless groups from the grassroots level who are in the same park as me, and this should also include myself.

16. A man named Shi Chengqi traveled a long distance to visit Laozi. When he saw Laozi, he was particularly disappointed. Because Laozi was unshaven and disheveled, his attire was not in order, which was quite different from the image of a sage.

17. The text is brimming with the word "flower," symbolizing blooming sunflowers, embodying an ever-uplifting posture. The words are imbued with the aroma of fireworks, the scent of plants and trees, and the scholarly atmosphere, evoking joy upon the first reading. The fresh and easy-to-understand style reveals Master Shen Congwen's ardent love for life and life itself. A few strokes of vivid description bring the charming natural scenery and unique local customs of Western Hunan to the eyes of every reader. Take this excerpt from "Taoyuan and Chenzhou" as an example: "That endless, ink-black cliff, those clusters of fragrant, dazzling flowers, those tiny, swirling streams, all combine to form an indescribably captivating sacred land!" With just a few strokes, the beauty of this Shangri-La paradise spills out.

18. Picking up "Xiangxing Sandi" once again, looking back at those shining days, a surge of energy surges through my body like a sacred drink: facing difficulties, I have no reason to retreat or give up. I must be firm in my goal, put in effort, and only in this way can I await the blooming of flowers. In the darkness, what we most need is that unwavering determination, as well as confidence and courage.

19. Shen Congwen had a tumultuous life, and what impressed me most about him was his pursuit of his first wife. The simplicity of that campus love would have been perfectly blended with the clean and pure Xiangxi if he had pursued it. However, it is truly unfair of heaven that such a person with no desires or ambitions should have to go through so many hardships in life.

20. During the Jiajing era of the Ming Dynasty, the first scholar Yang Shen was demoted to Yongchang Garrison in Yunnan Province for offending the emperor and was never reemployed.

21. Immersed in the mirror-like Xiangjiang River, my heart ripples with thoughts...

22. Death is an inevitable festival that will eventually arrive, regardless of whether you are willing or unwilling, willing to let go or not, scared or not. In the end, you will have to submit to the baptism of the死神. It is better to accept the fact of death calmly and with peace of mind than to live in constant fear and uncertainty.

23. "A mountain journey, a river journey, I journey to the side of Yu Pass, where the lamps in a thousand tents light up at midnight." He was alone, immersed in the darkness, drifting, drifting, constantly moving forward, drawing ripples, lingering with a continuous stream of thoughts and gentle sighs for his homeland and society. These scattered letters, with their white paper and black ink, failed to form a coherent piece. In the brief span of twenty days, were they composing the freedom of history or the sorrow of human nature?

24. Shi Chengqi said to Laozi, "I thought you were a sage, but I didn't expect you to be so despicable and unworthy of my admiration."

25. The mighty Yangtze River flows eastward, its waves washing away heroes. Right and wrong, success and failure all turn to emptiness. The green mountains still stand, and the red sun sets over the land several times. The white-haired fisherman and woodcutter by the riverbank are accustomed to watching the autumn moon and the spring breeze. A cup of rough wine is delightful when met with an old friend. Throughout the ages, countless events are all just subjects of laughter and talk.

26. Look, it's not that he is far from the secular world, untainted by the dust of the world. His love for his home, his love for his hometown, and his love for his motherland is only somewhat reserved, only as he freely talks and laughs, not delving deep, only love that is silent and profound.

27. No matter what perilous situation you find yourself in, always face it bravely; no matter what darkness you are in, always keep hope in your heart! To cherish every single day of the present, to be grateful for everything you have now, to be content and happy, to embrace the world with love— isn't this a spirit that we also greatly need at this moment? Life is fleeting, living is not easy, and with a hundred years of life, what is there that cannot be let go of?

28. In every busy workshop, during the hurried commutes to and from work, I always see the monotonous, mechanical, and uninteresting work behind each young face, along with not particularly impressive income, and looking further, a series of easily shattered dreams. As for me, perhaps I am a little stronger than them, tending to my own dreams in this foreign land.

29. In these brief twenty days, the author has traversed a path... Although from the cradle to the grave we are all on a single path, the scenery along the way is incredibly interesting and worth appreciating and contemplating. Of course, there are many hardships and toils along this journey, but what is important is not to close our eyes and live a life in obscurity. Otherwise, you will never see this world.

30. And these sailors share a common trait – that is, their courage and fearlessness. Despite their humble status, they regard the dignity of being a sailor as more important than their own lives. Even in the harsh cold of the Triple Nine winter, if the ship gets stuck, they would jump into the river without hesitation, stripping to their bare skin to pull the boat free; and even amidst towering waves, upon the captain's order, they would jump into the chilling river without a second thought. Isn't this a noble spirit of dauntless bravery?

31. In my view, such a person who has been politically marginalized is merely expressing freedom in his own way, and this freedom is a harbinger of people's expectations for a better life and a brighter future. It is a sincere hope, brimming with a heartfelt passion.

32. Life is a journey about experiences; give yourself more joy and less pain. The strongest mindset is to be indifferent. When you care about nothing, nothing unfriendly can affect you. You will live a carefree, unrestrained, and happy life.

33. When death has not yet come, cherish life and live well. If death descends, then accept whatever comes with ease and let fate decide.

34. The author's transformation is significant, so significant that it could be described as "nothing extraordinary, nothing surprising" when it comes to his hometown experiences. Yet, his transformation is also minute, so minute that he steadfastly clings to his "superstition" in believing in his own hands, writing novels that "no one wants to read." Therefore, his inner self has always been like those sailors, from youth to old age, even when adrift in a small boat, wandering east and west, aimless and drifting, amidst storms and waves, enduring countless blows, maintaining his composure while steering, swimming, laughing, and scolding. The marks of time are like the gentle ripples caused by a long pole stirring the clear water, slightly wrinkling the surface, and then gradually returning to calm.

35. Reading "Xiang" will make you feel that your emotions flow along with Shen, ultimately becoming as pure and clear as the waves, free of any杂质. Although Shen presents before us the悲惨fate of the poor and the sorrowful lives that are easily overlooked by the "social elite," he does not immerse himself in deep sorrow, nor does he indulge in boundless sympathy, nor does he impart a despondent and gloomy mood. What remains consistent is his warm love for the river, for the boatmen and their companions, and for the region. Because he knows that for the heavy lives of these people, we who read books are not worthy of expressing sympathy, and he is also powerless to do anything about their fates. Thinking about these thoughts, I can't help but recall the words in the book, which reads:

36. Journeying through the vast Xiang River, the traveler walks, walks, for a thousand miles, and then looks back, the Peach Blossom Paradise remains true to my original heart.

37. Remember when he saw Nuo You, he couldn't bear to disturb "their complacency towards the status quo." When he saw his former classmates, he was disappointed by their "insufficient spiritual nourishment," and so he quickly left, without casting another glance, leaving only a faint image in our minds. However, those sailors were with him throughout his entire journey, their images were the most vivid. They blended with nature, speaking freely and in a somewhat rough and simple manner, struggling against the winds and waves, their inner hearts as clear as water. Each of them was truly real. For example, that handsome old sailor with the ancient Roman warrior's physique and Tolstoy's white beard was, in the eyes of ordinary boatmen, "just an old and cunning thing." There's nothing "unwilling" to be said here, nor any spiritual "deficiency." It was the presence of these sailors that brought the journey to western Hunan to life, making it vibrant and full of vitality.

38. The most wonderful thing about this book is that the author is quite down-to-earth, without any sense of superiority. The thoughts expressed in the work are compassionate but not despondent, and everywhere it reveals a true love for this piece of land and the simple way of life. I am amazed at how perceptive the author can be at this age, and I can't help but be curious about the author's life experiences.

39. To be honest, reading this book was like wandering in a fog. While reading, I could still see the scenes described by the author, but as soon as I put the book down, my mind was instantly blank, making it difficult to comprehend the author's state of mind and emotions at the time. I suddenly found the book to be somewhat dull and tasteless. It wasn't until the later part titled "Occasional Reminiscence" that I began to feel a sense of resonance with the author. By then, I might have understood a fraction of a percent of the author's thoughts.

40. "My little boat stopped, stopping at Duck Nest Perimeter. The 'Small阜PingGang' mentioned in the letter during the middle period should be named 'Dongting Creek'. Duck Nest Perimeter is a deep pool, with the lush greenery of the two mountains being particularly charming, just like the hometown I wrote about for Cui Cui. The hanging foot tower is especially astonishing, towering on both banks, truly a miracle. The two mountains are deep green, but only the tiles of the hanging foot tower are white. In the river's long pool, there are about twenty rafts moored, with a light yellow color. There are little lambs bleating, and women shouting loudly for 'Elder Two' and 'Little Bull', and one can also hear the sound of firecrackers and small gongs from a distance. It is so touching to be in such a place."

41. I originally thought of Shen Congwen as just an academic, but later learned that he had joined the military at the age of 15 after graduating from elementary school. His childhood was prematurely exposed to too much bloodshed, so he early on experienced the impermanence of life. Mature and intelligent, he did not accept his fate and went to Beijing on his own at the age of 19, where he embarked on another wonderful chapter of his life. Many of his works are inspired by life. A person with rich experiences, strong and unpretentious in nature, their life itself is like an extraordinary book.

42. I've heard about this book for a long time, but never made up my mind to buy it. Seeing such a cute and beautiful new book, this time, I was both moved and took action.

43. The world praises him without urging, and the world criticizes him without discouraging him.

44. Li Ruiwan once said, "Xiangxing Sanji" is a work that is half factual and half fictional. When Shen Congwen wrote "Xiangxing Sanji," he often admitted that what he relied on during the writing process was not the things he had seen with his own eyes, but the things he had imagined. This kind of personal experience-based writing opened the prelude of travel literature, and the hometown, in the hearts of every wanderer, is always the purest utopia. Shen Congwen sprinkled the sacred warmth of his memory of the hometown into the words, hoping that these romantic words could soothe the homesickness of every wanderer.

45. There is a very good life attitude called "Living towards Death."

46. In the endless river of time, countless lives have come and gone, through the vicissitudes of the ages, different individuals have performed similar lives in the same scenes. "The green mountains remain the same, the setting sun has changed many times." Perhaps we are unable to change anything, but we can remember them well and deeply reflect on ourselves.

47. There was also the small school on the mountain, where everyone believed that the little friends who played soccer on the mountain would grow up to be extraordinary. War destroyed it, fortunately, everyone had escaped and scattered to different places. Now, the protagonist cannot return, and those companions who have been running on their life journeys for seventeen years, when they meet again, they are no different from the boring and vulgar middle-aged men that can be seen anywhere; they can't return either.

48. Whether in poverty or wealth, success or failure, under the gaze of the masses or in obscurity, in the end, everything returns to dust and earth; nothing is left behind, and nothing can be taken away.

49. Perhaps the protagonist is the author, perhaps not, but that doesn't matter, because what this journey through Xiang leaves behind is an intangible trace of the heart, not footprints. I read about the prototype of Zhenzhen in the first part of "The Border Town," who is the daughter of a woolen shop owner, and the prototype of Nuo Song is the author's comrade-in-arms from his military days, Nuo You. Seventeen years later, the author returned to the woolen shop and saw a girl who looked exactly like Zhenzhen working there; she was their daughter. Nuo You had aged so much that he could barely recognize him.

50. On your first read of "Xiang", you will find that there is clear and pure river water without any sediment, there are boat songs that you will never forget after hearing them, and there are sailors who love to speak in rustic language but are brave and strong. But there is more than that. From "Laowan" to "The Past and Present of Teng Hui Sheng Tang," you will understand that in that era of war and disorder, within the perspective of Shen alone, there were so many people who wandered and漂泊, so many ordinary people who quietly died in the war without their families knowing, so many couples who were separated from their families, waiting and then growing old in a mundane way, and so many ordinary people who lived in the cracks of fate in a mundane manner, only to meet unexpectedly on an ordinary day sixteen years later, but no longer recognize each other. On the first read, it seemed like reading a novel, but upon careful consideration, you realize that it is a series of true and genuine reflections of Shen's life experiences, which, when deeply reflected upon, cannot help but bring tears to one's eyes.
