1. 诗三百,思无邪。

1. Three hundred poems, thoughts are pure.

2. 子夏曰:“仕而优则学,学而优则仕。”译文 子夏说:“做官有余力时就去学习,学习能够游刃有余时就去做官。”

2. Zixia said, "When serving in office and have extra capacity, then engage in learning; when learning and excel, then take up office." Translation: Zixia said, "When one has surplus energy in serving the government, one should pursue learning; and when one excels in learning, one should take up a government post."

3. 日月逝矣,岁不我与。

4. 子曰:“岁寒,然后知松柏之后凋也。”译文 孔子说:“碰到了一年中最寒冷的季节,(我)才知道松柏是最后凋谢的。”

9. 子曰:“君子喻于义,小人喻于利。”译文 孔子说:“君子通晓道义,小人通晓私利。”

9. Confucius said, "The gentleman understands righteousness, while the mean man understands personal gain." Translation: Confucius said, "The gentleman is aware of moral principles, whereas the mean man is aware of personal interests."

10. 中人以上,可以语上也,中人以下,不可以语上也。

10. For those above the average, they can be spoken to about matters of higher status; for those below the average, they cannot be spoken to about matters of higher status.

11. 君子周而不比,小人比而不周。

Zengzi said, "I repeatedly reflect on myself every day: Am I loyal when advising others? Am I trustworthy in my friendships? Have I reviewed the knowledge taught by my teacher?"

17. 不仁者,不可以久处约,不可以长处乐。仁者安仁,知者利仁。

17. The unmerciful cannot maintain moderation for long, nor can they enjoy happiness for a long time. The benevolent find peace in being benevolent, and the wise find benefit in benevolence.

18. 何事于仁,必也圣乎!尧舜其犹病诸!夫仁者己欲立而立人,己欲达而达人。能近取譬,可谓仁之方也已。

18. What is more essential than benevolence, but holiness! Even Yao and Shun were troubled by it! The benevolent person desires to establish himself and establish others, desires to achieve success and help others achieve success. Those who can draw analogies from the near at hand can be said to be on the right path of benevolence.

19. 10子贡问曰:“有一言而可以终身行之者乎?”子曰:“其恕乎!己所不欲,勿施于人。”

19. Zi Gong asked, "Is there a single word that one can follow throughout one's life?" Confucius replied, "Perhaps it is the word 'restraint'! Do not impose on others what you would not want for yourself."

20. 见贤思齐焉,见不贤而内自省也。

20. When you see a virtuous person, think of becoming like him; when you see an unvirtuous person, examine yourself.

21. 子曰:“朝闻道,夕死可矣。”译文 孔子说:“早晨理解真理,晚上死也值得。”

21. Confucius said: "If one understands the truth in the morning, it is worthwhile to die at night." Translation: Confucius said, "If one comprehends the truth in the morning, even death in the evening is justified."

24. He is gentle yet strict, authoritative without being fierce, and respectful yet calm.

26. 质胜文则野,文胜质则史,文质彬彬,然后君子。

26. If substance prevails over style, it is primitive; if style prevails over substance, it is superficial. Only when both style and substance are harmonious can one be considered a gentleman.

27. 生而知之者上也;学而知之者次也;困而学之又其次也;困而不学,民斯为下矣。

27. Those who are born knowing it are the highest; those who learn and know it are the next best; those who struggle and then learn it are the next; and those who struggle but do not learn, the people are considered the lowest.

28. 自行束修以上,吾未尝无诲焉。

28. Regarding those who take upon themselves the responsibilities of self-discipline and修养, I have never failed to instruct them.

29. 子曰:“智者不惑,仁者不忧,勇者不惧。”译文 孔子说:“明智的人不会迷惑,仁爱的人不会忧愁,勇敢的人不会畏惧。”

29. Confucius said, "The wise are not perplexed, the benevolent are not anxious, the brave are not afraid." Translation: Confucius said, "The wise are not confused, the compassionate are not worried, and the brave are not fearful."

31. 子曰:“吾十有五而志于学,三十而立,四十而不惑,五十而知天命,六十而耳顺,七十而从心所欲,不逾矩。”译文 孔子说:“我十五岁时立志于学习;三十岁时做事符合礼仪;四十岁时(掌握了各种知识,)不受迷惑;五十岁时了解自然的规律;六十岁时一听别人言语,不用多想,便能明白;到了七十岁时便随心所欲,任何念头都不会越出规矩。”

31. Confucius said, "At the age of fifteen, I set my heart on learning; at thirty, I stood firm in my affairs; at forty, I was no longer confused; at fifty, I understood the mandates of heaven; at sixty, I could listen to others without contradiction; at seventy, I could do as I pleased without exceeding the bounds." Translation: Confucius said, "When I was fifteen, I made a resolve to study; by the age of thirty, I had established myself in my duties; at forty, I had gained understanding of various knowledge and was no longer deceived; at fifty, I knew the natural order of things; at sixty, I could hear others speak and understand without much thought; by the time I was seventy, I could do as I pleased, and none of my thoughts would go beyond the bounds."

32. 子曰:“质胜文则野,文胜质则史。文质彬彬,然后君子。”译文 孔子说:“一个人的内在质朴胜过外在的文采就会粗野,文采胜过质朴就会浮华。只有文采和质朴配合恰当,才是君子。”

32. Confucius said, "If a person's inner simplicity surpasses their outer elegance, they will seem uncouth. If their elegance surpasses their simplicity, they will appear insincere. Only when elegance and simplicity are properly balanced can one be a gentleman."

33. 学而不思则罔,思而不学则殆。

33. If one studies but does not think, one will be confused. If one thinks but does not study, one will be in danger.

34. 后生可畏,焉知来者之不如今也。

34. The young generation is formidable; how can one know that those to come will not be as good as, or even better than, those of today?

35. 君子无终食之间违仁,造次必于是,颠沛必于是。

35. A gentleman never betrays benevolence for even a meal's time, and in every moment of urgency he adheres to it, as in times of distress he must also adhere to it.

36. 莫春者,春服既成,冠者五六人,童子六七人,浴乎沂,风乎舞雩,咏而归。夫子喟然叹曰:吾与点也!

36. "It was in the early spring when the spring clothes were ready, and there were five or six young gentlemen, along with six or seven young boys, bathing in the Yi River, enjoying the breeze at the dance altar, and then singing their way back. The Master sighed deeply and said: 'I am with Dian!' "

37. 夫人不言,言必有中。

37. The lady speaks rarely, but when she does, she hits the nail on the head.

38. 子曰:“后生可畏,焉知来者之不如今也?”译文 孔子说:“年轻人是值得敬畏的,怎么就知道后一代不如前一代呢?”

38. Confucius said, "The youth are formidable to be feared; how can one know that those coming after will not be as good as those before?" Translation: Confucius said, "The young people are worthy of awe; how can one be certain that the younger generation will not be as good as the older one?"

39. 逝者如斯夫,不舍昼夜。

39. Such is the passage of the departed, ever ceaseless in day and night.

40. 视其所以,观其所由,察其所安,人焉廋哉!人焉廋哉!

40. Look at what he does, observe the path he takes, and examine the comfort he seeks; where can one hide? Where can one hide?

41. 孔子谓季氏:“八佾舞于庭,是可忍也,孰不可忍也?”译文 孔子说季氏:“他用天子的舞蹈阵容在自己的宗庙里舞蹈,这样的事可以容忍,什么事不能容忍?”

41. Confucius said to Ji Shi: "If the dance of the eight sets can be tolerated in the courtyard of the ancestral temple, what cannot be tolerated?" Translation: Confucius said to Ji Shi, "If using the dance formation of the天子 (emperor) in his own ancestral temple is tolerable, then what is not tolerable?"

42. 不知也。知其说者之于天下也,其如示诸斯乎?

42. I do not know. But for those who know the principle, does it not seem like showing it to them?

43. 子曰:“默而识之,学而不厌,诲人不倦,何有于我哉?”译文 孔子说:“将知识默记在心,学习时,不感到满足;教人时,不感到疲倦,这些我做到了哪些呢?”

43. Confucius said, "To memorize knowledge silently, to never be satisfied with learning, and to never tire of teaching others, which of these have I achieved?"

44. 子曰:“君子食无求饱,居无求安,敏于事而慎于言,就有道而正焉,可谓好学也已。”译文 孔子说:“君子,饮食不求饱足,居住不要求舒适,对工作勤劳敏捷,说话却小心谨慎,到有道的人那里去匡正自己,这样可以说是好学了。”

44. Confucius said, "A gentleman does not seek to be sated with food, nor to be comfortable in his residence. He is diligent and quick in his work, and cautious in his speech. He seeks guidance from those who follow the Way and corrects himself accordingly. This can be said to be a sign of a love of learning."

45. 先行其言而后从之。

45. Act according to what is spoken first, and then follow through with it.

46. 子曰:“由,诲汝知之乎? 知之为知之,不知为不知,是知也。”译文 孔子说:“仲由,教导你的道理都知道了吗?知道的就是知道的,不知道的就是不知道的,这种态度是聪明的啊!”

46. Confucius said, "You, Yu, have you learned the principles I have taught you? To know is to know, and to not know is to not know; this is wisdom." Translation: Confucius said, "Zizhou, have you grasped the teachings I have imparted to you? Knowing is knowing, and not knowing is not knowing; such an attitude is truly wise!"

47. 子曰:“见贤思齐焉,见不贤而内自省也。”译文 孔子说:“见到贤人,要向他看齐;见到不贤的人,要反省自己。”

47. Confucius said, "When you see a virtuous person, strive to be like him; when you see an unvirtuous person, reflect upon yourself."

48. 吾十有五而志于学,三十而立,四十而不惑,五十而知天命,六十而耳顺,七十而从心所欲,不逾矩。

48. At the age of fifteen, I set my heart on learning; at thirty, I stood firm in my life; at forty, I was no longer confused; at fifty, I understood my destiny; at sixty, I accepted what was said to me; at seventy, I did what I wanted without going beyond the bounds.

49. 8曾子曰:“士不可以不弘毅,任重而道远。仁以为己任,不亦重乎?死而后已,不亦远乎?”

49. Zengzi said, "A scholar cannot be without fortitude and determination, as the burden is heavy and the path is long. To take benevolence as one's responsibility is not it heavy? To achieve it only after death is not it far?"

50. 不患人之不己知,患不知人也。

50. Do not worry about people not knowing you; worry about not knowing people.

51. 不愤不启,不悱不发,举一隅,不以三隅反,则不复也。

51. If one is not moved to anger, then he will not be aroused to action; if one is not troubled, then he will not express his thoughts. If one gives an example but does not allow the understanding to be applied to other analogous situations, then he will not be enlightened.

52. 子曰:“巧言令色,鲜矣仁。”译文 孔子说:“花言巧语、满脸堆笑的,这种人是很少有仁德的。”

52. Confucius said, "Those who speak eloquently and have a pleasant appearance are rarely benevolent." Translation: Confucius said, "People who are skilled in using flowery language and have a constantly smiling face are seldom benevolent."

53. 已矣乎!吾未见好德如好色者也!

53. Alas! I have never seen anyone who loves virtue as much as they love beauty!

54. 知者乐水,仁者乐山;知者动,仁者静;知者乐,仁者寿。

54. The wise delight in water, the benevolent in mountains; the wise are active, the benevolent are tranquil; the wise are joyful, and the benevolent are long-lived.

55. 富而可求也,虽执鞭之士,吾亦为之,如不可求,从吾所好。

55. If wealth can be sought, even if I have to hold a horsewhip, I will do it. If it cannot be sought, I will follow my own inclinations.

56. 士不可以不弘毅,任重道远。仁以为已任,不亦重乎?死而后已,不亦远乎?

56. A gentleman cannot do without being magnanimous and resolute, for he carries a heavy burden and a long journey lies ahead. To consider benevolence as one's own responsibility, is it not heavy? To strive until death, is it not far?

57. 子曰:“不在其位,不谋其政。”译文 孔子说:“不在那个位置上,就不要想那个位置上的事。”

57. Confucius said, "If you are not in that position, do not concern yourself with the affairs of that position."

58. 不义而富且贵,于我如浮云。

58. Rich and honored through injustice, to me it is like a passing cloud.

59. 君子泰而不骄,小人骄而不泰。

59. A gentleman is calm and not proud, while a small person is proud and not calm.

60. 天何言哉!四时行焉,百物生焉,天何言哉!

60. What can heaven say? The four seasons proceed, and all things are born, yet what can heaven say?

61. 曾子曰:“士不可以不弘毅,任重而道远。仁以为己任,不亦重乎?死而后已,不亦远乎?”译文 曾子说:“士不可不志向远大,意志坚强,因为他肩负重任,路途遥远。以实行仁道为已任,不是也很重大吗?直到死才能罢休,不是也很遥远吗? 奋斗终身,死而后已,难道路程还不遥远吗?”

61. Zengzi said, "A scholar cannot do without ambition and determination, for he bears a heavy responsibility and the path is long. Isn't it heavy to take the practice of benevolence as one's own responsibility? Isn't it distant to think of death as the end? To strive throughout one's life and then stop only after death, isn't the journey still distant?" Translation: Zengzi said, "A scholar must have grand ambitions and strong will, as he carries a heavy burden and the road ahead is long. Isn't it significant to take the realization of benevolence as one's own mission? Isn't it far-off to think of death as the final end? To strive throughout one's life and to cease only after death – isn't that journey still distant?"

62. 色难。有事,弟子服其劳,有酒食,先生馔,曾是以为孝乎?

62. The difficulty in expressing gratitude. When there is something to do, the disciples should bear the labor; when there is wine and food, the senior should be served. Is this what is considered filial piety?

63. 躬自厚而薄责于人,则远怨矣。

63. If one is self-righteous and harsh in blaming others, one will accumulate much resentment.

64. 7子曰:“三人行,必有我师焉。择其善者而从之,其不善者而改之。”

64. Confucius said, "When three people walk together, there must be someone I can learn from. I choose to follow the good in them, and correct the bad in myself."

65. 学而时习之,不亦说乎?

65. Is it not pleasant to learn and practice what one has learned?

66. 三年无改于父之道,可谓孝矣。

66. To remain steadfast in one's father's teachings for three years is truly filial piety.

67. 礼之用,和为贵。

67. The use of propriety is to seek harmony, and harmony is of the utmost importance.

68. 信近于义,言可复也。恭近于礼,远耻辱也。因不失其亲,亦可宗也。

69. 学而时习之,不亦乐乎!

70. 可与言而不言,失人;不可与言而与之言,失言。知者不失人,亦不失言。

70. If you can speak but do not, you lose people; if you cannot speak but you do, you lose your words. The wise do not lose people, nor do they lose their words.

72. 毋意,毋必,毋固,毋我。

73. 子曰:“智者乐水,仁者乐山;智者动,仁者静;智者乐,仁者寿。”译文 孔子说:“明智的人喜欢水,仁慈的人喜欢山;明智的人好动,仁慈的人好静;明智的人快乐,仁慈的人长寿。”

Confucius said: "The wise are delighted by water, the benevolent by mountains; the wise are active, the benevolent are tranquil; the wise are joyful, the benevolent are long-lived."

74. 子曰:“朽木不可雕也,粪土之墙不可圬也,于予与何诛?”译文 孔子说:“朽木无法雕琢,粪土的墙壁无法粉刷,我能拿他怎样?”

74. Confucius said, "Decayed wood cannot be carved, and the walls made of dung cannot be whitewashed. What can I do to him?"

75. 子曰:“饭疏食饮水,曲肱而枕之,乐亦在其中矣。不义而富且贵,于我如浮云。”译文 孔子说:“吃粗粮,喝白水,弯着胳膊当枕头,乐趣也就在这中间了。用不正当的手段得来的富贵,对于我来讲就像是天上的浮云一样。”46~子曰:“其为人也孝悌,而好犯上者,鲜矣;不好犯上,而好作乱者,未之有也。君子务本,本立而道生。孝悌也者,其为人之本与!”译文 孔子说:“如果在家中尊敬父母团结兄长,却在外边经常以下犯上,这种人很少;如果不犯上,却作乱的,从来没有。君子应该守本分,做好自己应做的事才是天地正道。尊敬父母团结兄长,这是做人的根本啊!”

75. Confucius said: "To eat coarse rice and drink plain water, to lean on one's bent elbow as a pillow, and to find joy in such simplicity. Riches and honor acquired through injustice are as fleeting as the clouds in the sky to me." 46~Confucius said: "A person who is filial and respectful to his elders, yet often disobeys authority, is rare; and one who does not displease authority yet loves to cause chaos has never been seen. A gentleman focuses on the essentials; when the essentials are established, the way naturally follows. Filial piety and respect for the elders are the foundation of a person's character!"

76. 有则改之,无则加勉。

76. If there is something to correct, correct it; if not, strive to improve.

77. 子曰:“君子周而不比,小人比而不周。”译文 孔子说:“君子团结而不互相勾结,小人互相勾结而不团结。”

77. Confucius said: "A gentleman unites without colluding, while a small man colludes without uniting." Translation: Confucius said, "A gentleman is united without engaging in mutual intrigue, whereas a small man engages in mutual intrigue without unity."

78. 君子之德风,小人之德草,草上之风,必偃。

78. The virtue of a gentleman is like the wind, the virtue of a small man is like grass. Where the wind blows upon the grass, it must bow.

79. 子曰:“成事不说,遂事不谏,既往不咎。”译文 孔子说:“以前的事不要再评说了,做完的事不要再议论了,过去了就不要再追咎。”

79. Confucius said: "There is no need to comment on past events, no need to argue over completed affairs, and no need to seek blame for what has already happened." Translation: Confucius said, "Do not speak of past events anymore, do not discuss finished matters any longer, and do not seek to hold accountable what has passed."
