19. A handful of hometown soil. The Song Dynasty poet Yan Shuh has a poem titled "Pai Zhen Zi" which reads: "When swallows come at the time of the new sacrifice, the pear blossoms fall after Qingming. On the pond, there are three or four spots of green moss, and a couple of orioles sing under the leaves, the flying willow catkins are light in the long day. The eastern neighbor's girl friend, with a graceful smile, meets on the mulberry path. She wonders why last night's spring dream was so good, it turned out to be today's victory in the grass fight, and laughter springs from both cheeks." "Swallows" and "orioles" serve as signs of the time of year, indicating the arrival of spring. "New sacrifice" refers to the Spring Sacrifice. According to ancient customs, there are two sacrifices in a year: the Spring Sacrifice and the Autumn Sacrifice. "Spring Sacrifice" day (the fifth day after the Spring Equinox) is when the spring light is at its best and the spring spirit is at its peak. Farmers take off their clothes and go to the fields, busy with spring farming. At this time, swallows return gracefully, orioles sing melodiously, the earth is lush with grass, the pondside moss is green, and girls are playing the grass fight (a game) outdoors, a scene full of vitality.
