1. Su Shi once had a maid named Chao Yun in Hangzhou, whom he later took as a concubine and served him for twenty-three years. Chao Yun was beautiful and virtuous, skilled in singing and dancing, accompanying Su Shi through his turbulent life, the ups and downs of officialdom, and countless hardships. She bore countless setbacks, becoming Su Shi's most beloved companion in adversity. In Huizhou, one day, while sitting leisurely with Chao Yun, "The young autumn came, the fallen leaves rustled, and there was a sense of melancholy for the autumn." Su Shi then asked Chao Yun to sing the lyrics of "Butterfly Lovers." After a few lines, she suddenly choked up, tears brimming in her eyes. When Su Shi asked why, she replied, "What I cannot sing is 'The willow branches scatter their down, where in the world is there no fragrant grass?'" After saying this, she could not help but burst into tears, sobbing uncontrollably. From then on, Chao Yun was melancholic all day long and soon fell ill and passed away. It truly is: "A song of spring's sorrow, breaking the heart of a loving woman." After this, Su Shi was also melancholic and never listened to this song again. This is the "Butterfly Lovers in Spring." The first part of this poem focuses on the sorrow of spring. The spring flowers wither, the fallen petals fall to the ground, and the green apricots are just beginning to appear. The spring swallows fly low over the houses surrounded by green water. The willow catkins flutter and drift away to distant lands, where is there fragrant grass for them to rest? Everything is just the passing spring scenery; what it evokes in the heart is the sorrow of the passage of time. Thinking of the wandering and drifting with Su Dongpo, how could Chao Yun not be heartbroken and weep, unable to suppress her sorrow? However, Su Shi laughed and said, "I am mourning the autumn, and you are mourning the spring." The sorrow for autumn and spring also reflects a deep fear of the passing of time. In the context of Su Shi's writing, one can feel his regret for his unfulfilled ambitions and his sorrow for the passage of time. Having gone through hardships, like the withered petals and scattered catkins, Chao Yun's desolate and even despairing state of mind can be imagined. The second part of the poem focuses on the sorrow of love. Su Shi skillfully seized a detail in life to create a tragicomedy full of meaning. "The wall" symbolizes separation. There is a beauty inside the wall and a passerby outside, separated by a wall. The beauty laughs, the passerby is moved. The laughers do not know there is someone outside the wall, while the moved one only hears the laughter and does not see the person. The laughter gradually fades away, but the affectionate passerby is left with endless worries. This lingering sorrow is, on the surface, a description of a love story that happens in life; from a deeper level, it reflects Su Shi's depressed state of mind in politics during his days in Miyi. "Holding a post in the clouds, when will the day come to send Feng Tang?" This shows Su Shi's desire for the understanding of the court, but "the floating world, everything is hard to predict," and there is also a wall between Su Shi and the court. Isn't the metaphor of "the beauty" reminiscent of Qu Yuan's "fragrant grass and beautiful people"? Chao Yun's despair may be a tragedy born out of this separation.

13. Learn to let go. Giving up is not about abandonment; it is a form of waiting, waiting for a better opportunity. The martial sage Guan Yu, who embodies the virtue of righteousness, also had the experience of submitting to Han but not to Cao. Although he was in Cao's camp, his heart was in Han, always thinking of supporting Liu and restoring the Han. Ultimately, this led to his heroic act of traveling a thousand miles alone on horseback!
14. These are the two most praised lines in the poem. The willow catkins, floating away with the wind from the branches, become fewer and fewer; everywhere under the sky, where is there no lush green grass? "Liu mian" refers to the willow catkins. The flying willow catkins symbolize the waning of spring, which naturally brings a sense of sadness; while the green grass represents a different realm. Su Shi's breadth of mind is evident here. The line "in the distant land" is derived from Qu Yuan's "Li Sao" – "Where does not have fragrant grass, why do you miss your hometown?" It is the words of the diviner Ling Feng advising Qu Yuan, and its thought is consistent with what Su Shi said in "Ding Feng Bo" – "Where my heart is at peace, that is my hometown." Even so, these two lines still contain much bitterness and sadness. According to the records in "Word Talk Under the Trees": "Zi Zhan was in Huizhou, sitting leisurely with Chao Yun. It was the time when the Qing Nü (Frost Goddess) had just arrived, the fallen leaves rustling, conveying a melancholic feeling of autumn. He ordered Chao Yun to hold a large cup and sing 'The flowers have shed their red petals.' As Chao Yun sang, her voice was about to break, and tears were wetting her clothes. When Zi Zhan asked the reason, she replied, 'What I cannot sing is that the willow catkins are blowing away and becoming fewer, and everywhere in the distant land there is fragrant grass.' "Connecting this with Su Shi's experiences at the time is quite thought-provoking. Su Shi spent his life in wandering, and in the end, he was exiled to the distant south of the country. At this time, he was in his later years, looking longingly at his hometown, almost at the edge of the world. This situation is so similar to the willow catkins flying away with the wind!"

Carrying them around only serves as a burden to oneself. Therefore, we need to learn to choose and understand the importance of letting go.
