1. 言无务为多而务为智,无务为文而务为察。
1. Words should be many but action should be wise, words should be literary but action should be observant.
2. 今士之用身,不若商人之用一布之慎也。
2. Today, the use of one's body by the common scholar is not as careful as the use of a piece of cloth by a merchant.
3. 故备者,国之重也;食者,国之宝也;兵者,国之爪也;城者,所以自守也。
3. Therefore, those who are prepared are the backbone of the nation; those who provide food are the nation's treasure; those who fight are the nation's claws; and cities are for self-defense.
4. 天下之百姓皆上同于天子,而不上同于天,则菑犹未去也。
4. If all the people in the world are united under the Son of Heaven but not united under heaven itself, then the calamities have not yet been removed.
5. 欲人之处高爵禄则以让贤也,多财则以分贫也。
5. If someone desires a high position and wealth, they should offer them to a virtuous person; if they have wealth in abundance, they should distribute it among the poor.
6. 不胜其任,而处其位,非此位之人也。
6. Unable to bear the responsibility, yet occupying this position, one is not fit for this position.
7. 选天下之贤可者,立以为天子。
7. Choose the most capable and virtuous among the people of the world and establish them as the Son of Heaven.
8. 以德就列,以官服事,以劳殿赏,量功而分禄。?>
8. Be virtuous in one's position, serve one's duty with one's official attire, reward with honors based on merit, and distribute salaries based on the measure of one's achievements.
9. 近者不亲,无务来远。
9. If someone is nearby, they are not close; there is no need to seek out those who are distant.
10. 顺天意者,兼相爱,交相利,必得赏;反天意者,别相恶,交相贼,必得罚。
10. Those who comply with the will of heaven will love each other mutually, benefit each other reciprocally, and will certainly be rewarded; whereas those who go against the will of heaven will be mutually hostile, steal from each other, and will certainly be punished.
11. 夫以奢侈之君御好淫僻之民,欲国无乱不可得也。
11. It is impossible for a luxurious ruler to govern a people who have a penchant for licentiousness and eccentricity and still expect the country to remain without chaos.
12. 甘瓜苦蒂,天下物无全美。
12. Sweet melon has bitter roots, and no thing in the world is perfectly beautiful.
13. 诚信者,天下之结也。
13. Honesty is the bond of the world.
14. 是故置本不安者,无务丰末。
14. Therefore, if the root is not stable, do not strive to enrich the branches.
15. 凡其为此物也,无不加用而为者,是故用财不费,民德不劳,其兴利多矣。
15. For all things that are thus made, they are all produced with additional use in mind, hence the use of wealth is not wasteful, and the people's virtues are not exhausted, thus yielding numerous benefits.
16. 且夫义者政也,无从下之政上,必从上之政下。
16. Moreover, righteousness is politics; there is no politics that goes from the bottom to the top, but only from the top to the bottom.
17. 而义可以利人,故曰,义天下之良宝也。
17. And righteousness can benefit others, therefore it is said, righteousness is the fine treasure of the world.
18. 凡言凡动,利于天鬼百姓者为之;凡言凡动,害于天鬼百姓者舍之。
18. For all words and actions, those that benefit the gods, spirits, and the people should be pursued; those that harm the gods, spirits, and the people should be abandoned.
19. 君子战虽有陈,而勇为本焉;丧虽有礼,而哀为本焉;士虽有学,而行为本焉。
19. In battle, though a gentleman may have a strategy, bravery is the foundation; in mourning, though there are proper rites, sorrow is the foundation; for scholars, though they may have knowledge, their actions are the foundation.
20. 故时年岁善,则民仁且良;时年岁恶,则民吝且恶。
20. In times of prosperity, the people are benevolent and kind; in times of adversity, the people are greedy and malevolent.
21. 告子为仁,譬犹跂以为长,隐以为广,不可久也。
21. Gaozi talks about benevolence and compares it to stretching one's leg to become taller or hiding something to make it appear broader; it is not something that can last long.
22. 虽使鬼神请亡,此犹可以合欢聚众,取亲于乡里。
22. Even if ghosts and spirits are requested to attend the funeral, this can still be a reason for joy and gathering with a sense of community, fostering relationships within the village.
23. 暴乱之人也得活,天下害不除,是为群残父母而深贱世也,不义莫大也。
23. Even those involved in riots must live; if the harm in the world is not eradicated, this is to deeply degrade the world as the parents of the multitude of the wicked, and it is the greatest injustice.
24. 上之为政,得下之情则治,不得下之情则乱。
24. As a ruler, if one gains the trust and understanding of the people below, the country will be in order; if one does not, chaos will ensue.
25. 人不分幼长贵贱,皆天只臣也。
25. All people, regardless of age, status, or rank, are solely subjects to heaven.
26. 上之所以使下者,一物也;下之所以事上者,一术也。
26. The reason why the superior exerts authority over the inferior is one thing; the reason why the inferior serves the superior is one method.
27. 良马难乘,然可以任重致远;良才难令,然可以致君见尊。
27. It is difficult to ride a good horse, but it can carry heavy loads to distant places; it is hard to command a talented person, but it can bring about the ruler's recognition and respect.
28. 故君子力事日强,愿欲日逾,设壮日盛。
28. Therefore, a virtuous person's abilities in matters become stronger day by day, their desires grow increasingly, and their aspirations are at their zenith.
29. 非独国有染,士亦有染。
29. Not only the state is corrupted, the scholars are also corrupted.
30. 讲话不求多而求智,不求文采而求明察。
30. The speech seeks wisdom rather than length, and clarity rather than eloquence.
31. 刀受其利,试者受其不祥。
31. The knife benefits from its sharpness, but the one who tries it endures its ill fate.
32. 故其乐逾繁者,其治逾寡。自此观之,乐非所以治天下也。
32. Therefore, the more extravagant the joy, the fewer the ways of governance. From this perspective, joy is not the means to govern the world.
33. 良弓难张,然可以及高人深;良马难乘,然可以任重致远。
33. It is difficult to draw a good bow, yet it can reach great heights and profound depths; it is difficult to ride a good horse, yet it can carry heavy loads and reach distant destinations.
34. 然则不在古服与古言矣。且子法周而未法夏也,子之古非古也。
34. Therefore, it is not about ancient attire and ancient language. Moreover, you follow the laws of the Zhou Dynasty but not those of the Xia Dynasty; your "ancient" is not truly ancient.
35. 吏不治则乱,农事缓则贫。
35. If officials do not govern properly, chaos will ensue; if agricultural affairs are delayed, poverty will result.
36. 死则即以葬矣,生者必无久哭,而疾而从事,人为其所能,以交相利也。
36. When one dies, they should be buried immediately. The living should not mourn for too long and should quickly resume their duties. People should do what they are capable of, and thus mutually benefit each other.
37. 贫家而学富家衣食多用,则速亡必矣。
37. If a poor family studies as much as a wealthy family and spends on clothing and food, they are sure to decline rapidly.
38. 教人学而执有命,是犹命人葆而去亓冠也。
38. To teach others to learn and yet hold onto the belief in destiny is like commanding someone to preserve their virtue while taking off their hat.
39. 繁饰有命,以教众愚朴之人。
39. There is a commandment of adornment, to teach the simple-minded multitude.
40. 是故江河不恶小谷之满己也,故能大。圣人者,事无辞也,物无违也,故能为天下器。
40. Therefore, the great rivers do not detest the filling of themselves with the small valleys, thus they can become great. The sage does not shun any task, nor does he resist any thing, thus he can become the vessel for the world.
41. 譬犹使人负剑,而求其寿也。
41. It is as if one were to ask someone to carry a sword while seeking longevity.
42. 名不可简而成也,誉不可巧而立也,君子以身戴行者也。
42. A name cannot be simplified into existence, and a reputation cannot be established by cunning. A gentleman is one who leads by example.
43. 善无主于心者不留,行莫辩于身者不立。
43. Goodness that does not take root in the heart will not linger, actions that cannot be justified by oneself will not be established.
44. 天下之为君者众,而仁者寡。
44. There are many who act as rulers in the world, but few are benevolent.
45. 特上不以为政,而士不以为行故也。
45. It is because the superior does not govern according to policy, and the scholars do not act according to conduct.
46. 以此亏夺民衣食之财,仁者弗为也。
46. To appropriate the people's food and clothing through this means is not something benevolent people would do.
47. 江河之水,非一源之水也;千镒之裘,非一狐之白也。
47. The waters of rivers and streams are not all from the same source; a thousand-yuan robe is not made from the fur of a single fox.
48. 天下兼相爱则治,交相恶则乱。
48. If all under heaven love each other, there will be harmony; if they hate each other, there will be chaos.
49. 是故天地不昭昭,大水不潦潦,大火不燎燎,王德不尧尧者,乃千人之长也。
49. Therefore, if the heavens are not resplendent, great waters are not flooding, great fires are not raging, and the king's virtue is not as noble as Yao, then he is the leader of a thousand people.
50. 投我以桃。报之以李。即此言爱人者必见爱也。而恶人者必见恶也。
50. "Give me a peach, and I will repay with a plum." This saying implies that those who love will be loved in return, and those who hate will be hated in return.
51. 所信者不忠,所忠者不信。
51. Those who are trusted are not loyal, and those who are loyal are not trusted.
52. 爱人不外己,己在所爱之中。
52. To love is not to love oneself, for oneself is within what is loved.
53. 为义犹是也,能谈辩者谈辩,能说书者说书,能从事者从事,然后义事成也。
53. It is still the case for righteousness: those who can debate, debate; those who can recite, recite; those who can engage in their respective fields, engage in them. Only then can righteous actions be achieved.
54. 出则无衣也,入则无食也,内续奚吾,并为淫暴,而不可胜禁也。
54. When outside, there is no clothing; when inside, there is no food. Within, we continue to indulge in licentiousness and violence, which cannot be restrained.
55. 染千苍则苍,染于黄刚黄。
55. Dye it with azure, and it turns azure; dye it with yellow, and it turns yellow.
56. 利人乎即为,不利人乎即止。
56. To do good to others is to continue; to harm others is to stop.
57. 老而无妻子者,有所侍养,以终其寿;幼弱孤童之无父母者,有所放依,以长其身。
57. The elderly without a spouse, if they have someone to support them, will live out their days; the young and weak orphans without parents, if they have someone to take care of them, will grow up healthy.
58. 官无常责而民无终贱,有能刚举之,无能则下之。
58. The officials have no constant responsibility and the people have no ultimate worthiness; those who can firmly elevate them are elevated, and those who cannot are demoted.
59. 故父母、学、君三者,莫可以为治法。
59. Therefore, neither parents, scholars, nor rulers can solely serve as the basis for a method of governance.
60. 有能则举之,无能则下之。举公义,辟私怨,此若言之谓也。
60. If someone is capable, promote them; if someone is incapable, demote them. Upholding justice and resolving private grievances is what this saying refers to.
61. 爵位不高,则民弗敬;蓄禄不厚,则民不信;政令不断,则民不畏。
61. If one's title is not high, the people will not respect; if the salary is not generous, the people will not trust; if the political orders are not consistent, the people will not fear.
62. 而天下皆曰其力也,必不能曰我见命焉。
62. Yet all the world would say it was due to his power, but none would say, "I see it as an appointment."
63. 节俭则昌,淫佚则亡。有能则举之,无能则下之。
63. Economy leads to prosperity, indulgence leads to ruin. Those who are capable should be promoted, and those who are incapable should be demoted.
64. 此圣王之法,天下之治道也,不可不务也。
64. This law of the sacred king is the way of governance for the world, which cannot be neglected.
65. 心无备虑,不可以应卒。
65. Without preparation and foresight, one cannot cope with emergencies.
66. 天之行广而无私,其施厚而不德,其明久而不衰,故圣王法之。
66. The course of the heavens is vast and无私, its benevolence profound without expecting gratitude, and its brightness enduring without fading. Hence, the sage kings follow its example.
67. 君子不镜于水而镜于人。
67. A gentleman does not take a mirror in water but in people.
68. 官无常责而民无终贱。
68. The officials do not hold permanent responsibility, and the people do not have a perpetual low status.
69. 是以美善在上,而怨雠在下;安乐在上,而忧戚在臣。此翟所谓忠臣也。
69. Thus, beauty and goodness are above, while resentment and enmity are below; comfort is above, while sorrow and distress are among the ministers. This is what Zhi said about loyal ministers.
70. 利之中取大,害之中取小。
70. Choose the greater good from benefits, and the lesser harm from dangers.
71. 非独染丝然也,国亦有染。
71. It's not just silk that is dyed, the country also has its 'dyeing.'
72. 以德就列,以官服事,以老殿赏,量功而分禄。
72. With virtue in their position, serving with their official attire, respecting the elders in awards, and distributing salaries according to their achievements.
73. 是与天下之所以察知有与无之道者,必以众之耳目之实知有与无为仪者也。
73. This is the way in which the people of the world discern the existence or non-existence of things: they must rely on the actual knowledge obtained through the collective eyes and ears.
74. 故翟以为虽不耕织乎,而功贤于耕织也。
74. Therefore, Zhai believed that even though he did not engage in farming or weaving, his contributions were superior to those of farming and weaving.
75. 是犹三军北,失后之人求赏也。
75. It is as if the three armies are moving north, and the people who have lost seek rewards.
76. 是犹倮谓撅者不恭也。
76. It is as if Laozi said that to be rebellious is to be disrespectful.
