10. "The Lives of Great Men" consists of "The Life of Michelangelo" by Romain Rolland, "The Life of Tolstoy," and "The Life of Beethoven." The first two biographies were translated by my father in 1934 and published by the Commercial Press in 1935; the latter biography was translated during his stay in France in the spring of 1931, retranslated in 1942, and published by the Camel Bookstore in 1946. After 1949, my father regarded these three biographies as outdated translations from his youth, with a mix of literary and colloquial language and many flaws. Due to various other reasons, they were not republished until the 1980s, when they were included separately in "Five Biographies Translated by Fu Le" and "The Collection of Fu Le's Translations." In 1994, the Commercial Press again included the first two biographies in the series "World Famous Biographies," and published them in separate volumes. In the 1990s, Anhui Literature and Art Press published these three biographies under the title "Three Biographies of Giants" as part of the series of Fu Le's famous translations, and distributed over 100,000 copies. Now, Yilin Publishing House has published "The Lives of Great Men" as one of the recommended reading books for extra-curricular reading in the middle school Chinese language teaching syllabus, which is of great significance. To facilitate reading for the majority of young readers, during the editing process, this edition has adopted the current translation methods for some common names or places, and has tried to translate foreign names or places mentioned in the text into Chinese as much as possible. Some misprints have also been corrected. The preface of "The Lives of Great Men" is the foreword written by Mr. Yang Zhaogeng for the Sanlian bookstore edition of "Five Biographies Translated by Fu Le." For the convenience of layout and reading, this edition has included all annotations in the main text. Annotations with an asterisk (*) indicate translations, those with double asterisks (**) indicate new annotations by the author, and the rest are original annotations. In addition, due to their age, the reference books at the end of "The Life of Beethoven" are not of much value to today's readers, so they have been arbitrarily omitted.
