1. 日出而作，日入而息。

9. The joy is as light as a feather, yet no one knows how to carry it.

10. 人之貌有与也。

10. People have similarities in their appearance.

11. 大道不称，大辩不言。

11. The great path is not named, the great orator does not speak.

12. 道隐于小成，言隐于荣华。

12. The Tao is hidden in small achievements, words are hidden in glory and wealth.

13. 一尺之捶，日取其半，万世不竭。

13. A rod one chi long, if you take half of it every day, it will never be exhausted in ten thousand generations.

14. 其嗜欲深者，其天机浅。

14. The deeper one's desires and cravings, the shallower their natural vitality.

15. 人皆知有用之用，而莫知无用之用也。

15. Everyone knows the use of what is useful, but no one knows the use of what is useless.

16. 众人重利，廉士重名。

16. The masses value material gain, while frugal gentlemen value fame.

17. 临大难而不惧。

17. Fear not in the face of great adversity.

18. 真者，精诚之至也，不精不诚，不能动人。

18. The true is the ultimate in sincerity and honesty; without sincerity and honesty, one cannot move others.

19. 游于羿之彀中。

19. Staying within the bow's range of the archer Yi.

20. 至人无己，神人无功，圣人无名。

20. The superior person has no self, the divine person has no merit, and the sage has no name.

21. 螳螂之怒臂以当车轶，则必不胜任矣。

21. If the mantis' angry arm is used as a carriage whip, it will surely be unable to bear the weight.

22. 仁义之端，是非之途。

22. The beginning of benevolence and righteousness, the path of right and wrong.

23. 刀刃若新发于硎。

23. The blade is as sharp as newly emerged from the whetstone.

24. 寡不道以欢成有德者能之。

24. "It is rare for a person who lacks virtue to achieve happiness; only those with virtue can do so."

25. 形如槁木，心如死灰。

25. Like withered wood, the heart as cold as dead ashes.

26. 众人重利，廉士重名，贤人尚志，圣人贵精。

26. The multitude seek profit, the upright value fame, the wise cherish their aspirations, and the sage esteems the refinement.

27. 见笑于大方之家。

27. Be laughed at by the learned in the great house.

28. 螳螂捕蝉，黄雀在后。

28. The mantis catches the cicada, and the magpie is waiting behind.

29. 相濡以沫，不如相忘于江湖。

29. It is better to forget each other in the vast river and lake than to help each other with the little water we have.

30. 不知其所以然。

30. Not knowing the reason why.

31. 来世不可待，往世不可追。

31. The next life cannot be awaited, and the past life cannot be pursued.

32. 两喜必多溢美之言，两怒必多溢恶之言。

32. When two are pleased, there will be many words of praise; when two are angry, there will be many words of blame.

33. 得鱼而忘荃，得意而忘言。

33. Fish caught, forget the fishing net; success achieved, forget the words.

34. 相嘘以湿。相濡以沫。

34. Wetting each other with mutual sighs. Lathering each other with mutual droplets.

35. 不忘其所始，不求其所终。

35. Not to forget where one comes from, and not to seek where one will end up.

36. 名也者，相轧也；知也者，争之器。二者凶器，非所以尽行也。

36. A "name" refers to mutual confrontation; "knowledge" refers to a tool of contention. Both are dangerous tools, not what should be used to completely govern.

37. 悲乐者，德之邪；喜怒者，道之过；好恶者，心之失。

37. Sorrow and joy are deviations from virtue; anger and happiness are excesses of the Tao; good and evil are the mistakes of the heart.

38. 生有涯而知无涯。

38. Life has limits, but knowledge has none.

39. 以火救火，以水救水。

39. Use fire to extinguish fire and water to quench water.

40. 无所逃于天地之间。

40. There is no escape between heaven and earth.

41. 丘山积卑而为高，江河合水而为大。

41. Mounds of earth accumulate to become high, and rivers and streams converge to become great.

42. 遁天倍情，忘其所受。

42. Abandon oneself to the heavens and amplify one's emotions, forgetting where one's sufferings come from.

43. 鉴明则尘垢不止。

43. If clarity is not achieved, dust and dirt will not cease.

44. 君子之交淡如水。

44. The friendship between gentlemen is as pure and light as water.

45. 鸟兽不厌高，鱼鳖不厌深。

45. Birds and beasts never tire of high places, fish and turtles never tire of the deep.

46. 举世而誉之而不加劝，举世而非之而不加沮。?>

46. To be praised by the whole world and not to be moved by it; to be criticized by the whole world and not to be discouraged by it.

47. 朝菌不知晦朔，蟪蛄不知春秋。

47. The mushrooms do not know the lunar changes of winter and summer, the cicadas do not know the changes of spring and autumn.

48. 名也者，相札也；知也者，争之器也。

48. "Name" refers to a sign; "knowledge" refers to a tool for contention.

49. 以管窥天，以锥刺地。

49. Look at the sky through a tube, and pierce the earth with a needle.

50. 大块载我以形，劳我以生，佚我以老，息我以死。

50. The large block carries me in form, exhausts me in life, relaxes me in old age, and rests me in death.

51. 形莫若就心莫若和，意有所至爱有所亡。

51. The form should be as close as the heart; harmony should be as close as the mind. Where the mind reaches, love is lost.

52. 以其知之所知，以养其知之所不知。

52. With what he knows, he nourishes what he does not know.

53. 只可意会，不可言传。

53. It can only be felt but not expressed in words.

54. 窃钩者诛，窃国者为诸侯。

54. Those who steal hooks are punished, but those who steal a country become feudal lords.

55. 大而无当，往而不返。

55. Vast and without purpose, going forth and never returning.

56. 盖之如天，容之如地。

56. Cover it like the sky, embrace it like the earth.
