1. However, psychological collapse can accelerate the progression of cancer. After receiving a cancer diagnosis, the vast majority of people will experience symptoms such as anxiety, insomnia, and even some form of mental disarray. While these symptoms may not pose a long-term problem, for cancer patients, most will persist until the day of their death. These mental and psychological disturbances can lead to physical fatigue, poor appetite, insufficient sleep, and can lower immunity, all of which can accelerate the progression of cancer.

2. I will briefly introduce the process of the Buddha's cultivation. The main purpose is to tell you all that like us, Shakyamuni was an ordinary person. He was able to realize enlightenment through cultivation, and all the countless human beings can also follow suit and imitate him. By practicing according to the teachings he imparted, they can also achieve fruition.

3. In front of you is a cup of water. If you continue to heat the water, it will turn into steam and you will no longer see the trace of water. However, this does not mean that the water actually disappears into 'nothingness.' When the steam cools down, it will revert back to 'water' again.

4. When patients are diagnosed with cancer, they often find it difficult to accept the judgment of a countdown to death, which indeed requires a strong psychological quality to bear. It's absolutely overwhelming for most people, and the psychological impact of such a death sentence is tremendous. Even the most ruthless murderers would feel their legs weaken upon hearing the court's death penalty sentence with a suspended execution, and there are not a few who would be so scared that they would wet their pants. Therefore, if you haven't faced such a desperate situation, you can't understand this kind of despair. As doctors, because we have seen and communicated with many patients, we are able to understand their inner world.

5. Life is short and uncertain. If you still insist on nitpicking, then by the time you haven't found the answer to the 'first cause of the universe', you may already be dead.

6. The answer given by the foreign teacher was like this, without citing theorems or known assumptions, they directly wrote the answer: X = God.

7. We were originally laughing and talking among ourselves, but we all went home in a gloomy mood, heavy-hearted. After we got home, we couldn't sleep all night, flipping back and forth like a griddle cake, worrying that we really had thyroid cancer and wondering what to do with our children. The next day, everyone went to a top-tier hospital for checks with their husbands, but I went alone. The result was that none of us had thyroid issues. We all cursed the hospital, calling it a fraud, for causing us unnecessary panic. The person in charge of the check lived downstairs from me. I showed her the reports from both hospitals, and only then did she reveal the truth. It turned out that the equipment in her hospital was all discarded from top-tier hospitals, and this hospital was using it to check patients' health. Isn't this playing with people's lives?

8. The third is death caused by cancer itself. Besides those who are cured, many cancer patients ultimately die due to the progression of the cancer, just like everyone will eventually die, it's inevitable. However, if the cancer patient's tumor cannot be controlled, death is inevitable. But this is different from dying of fear, which refers to death caused by fear itself upon learning about the cancer diagnosis, not from the spread or metastasis of cancer, nor from the destruction of various organ functions leading to death.

9. In the past few years, some experts have said that cancer should be screened and treated early, which led to lowering the age range for physical examinations. As a result, the cancer mortality rate increased, as these people would collapse once they found out they had cancer, leading to premature death. If it had not been detected early, they might have lived a few more years. One group is those who have good conditions and receive active treatment but actually die prematurely due to over-treatment, which everyone may have heard about. Some wealthy cancer patients die earlier than those without money, as over-treatment further destroys their immune system. There are also a few people who, due to limited conditions, are not too concerned about it and live for the day, which may give them a longer life. The last part is what we call the "anti-cancer stars." They did not receive any treatment; it is these people who encourage and support each other, forming a group to warm each other up. It was found that they live well, and if they learn to regulate their emotions and enhance their immunity, they can live longer. For example, Li Kaifu and Zhou Yiping are all examples.

10. Buddhism has three baskets and twelve divisions, with eighty-four thousand methods (the methods are the ways of practice). These methods of practice are all created to accommodate the different capacities of sentient beings and to counteract the烦恼 of sentient beings. If there were no sentient beings, there would be no need for Buddhism. Just like medicine, if sentient beings have no 'disease' of烦恼, there is no need for the medicine.

11. At the same time, Buddhism advocates ' boundless mercy without any cause' and ' boundless compassion with the same body,' and further promotes the meaning of equality to an even higher level.

12. Where did this statistical data come from? How could such statistics exist? In fact, it's impossible to collect such data. What do you call being frightened to death? As soon as someone hears they have cancer, they collapse and die immediately? Well, it can be considered as being frightened to death, but I've never seen anyone collapse and die immediately upon hearing they have cancer, unless they have heart disease or other underlying conditions that can't withstand any kind of stress. For example, some patients with hypertension might collapse and die after arguing with someone, which can be considered as being killed by anger. However, essentially, it is still his hypertension problem. The blood pressure is not controlled well, and the blood vessels burst during anger, leading to cerebral hemorrhage and death. Or some people may not know they have an aortic aneurysm or an aortic dissection, and it is discovered by accident during medical check-ups for other diseases. Some people have never known about this condition and suddenly die one day after being excited or angry. Is it the excitement and anger that killed them? It can be considered so, but the fundamental reason is still the underlying aortic aneurysm, which is like a time bomb in their body. Therefore, you cannot conclude that anger or excitement can kill, as normally healthy people generally would not.

13. 'You shall love your enemies.' Although it comes from the Bible, Buddhism undoubtedly acknowledges it as a truth with virtue (similar to Buddhism's 'boundless kindness towards those without connection' and 'great compassion with oneness').

14. These tangible things that we can see, we can all simply refer to them as 'form,' because they are merely 'temporary gatherings of causes and conditions,' not truly unchanging. Therefore, we say they are 'empty'—they do not possess an eternal, unchanging substance. This is the simple truth of the Buddhist scriptures that 'form is emptiness.'

15. "Winning the Triple First" refers to achieving the top position in the local examination (xiangshi), the national examination (huashi), and the imperial examination (dianshi) all in a row. Throughout the 300 years of the Ming Dynasty, there were only two people who achieved the Triple First. Tang Baohu made such a boastful statement, which led many to believe that he had cheated in the imperial examinations. As a result, they wrote a joint letter to the imperial court requesting a thorough investigation.

16. My partner told me that Old Zhong can't eat his meals anymore, not even congee. After just a few sips, he shakes his head and waves his hands, refusing to eat more. I guess his heart is heavy, and he can't eat. Not only eating, but even the hydration maintenance method he is proud of has been interrupted, and he now relies on intravenous infusion to replenish fluids.

17. However, in many cases, this is unnecessary. Getting a diagnosis at the best local hospital and following the treatment plan of an authoritative expert is enough. For example, if I am in Tianjin, and it can't be treated in Tianjin, it is also very difficult in Beijing and Shanghai, and it's all talk about Japan and the United States. It is obvious that getting treated in another city will definitely increase the cost due to transportation, accommodation, and medical insurance, which could lead to bankruptcy.

18. Although the Buddhist scriptures mention so-called pure lands such as the "Western Pure Land" and the "Eastern Crystal World," and encourage people to recite Buddha's name to be reborn in those lands, anyone who has a slight understanding of the true essence of Buddhism knows that this is a temporary expedient method by the Buddha and bodhisattvas to lead sentient beings. The ultimate goal of Buddhism is to "transform the human world into a magnificent pure land and turn hell into a paradise." This is the true purpose of Buddhism, not to have people escape this world and seek happiness in the Western Pure Land.

19. A counter employee at the bank downstairs was scared to death by cancer. He was in his thirties that year, with a fair and clean appearance, very elegant and handsome. His wife was a civil servant at an institution. She was feeling unwell, and after checking at a local top-grade hospital, nothing was found wrong with her. She wanted to get checked at a provincial hospital. The bank employee took a leave of absence to accompany his wife to the city hospital for a check-up. After his wife's examination, nothing was found wrong with her. He thought it was not easy to come to the city, so he decided to get himself checked as well. The hospital's examination report showed that he had liver cancer, but he had no symptoms at all, and he was in very good health. How could he have cancer? So his wife accompanied him to another hospital in the city for a check-up, and the result was still liver cancer. This completely broke his spirit. He thought, if his condition couldn't be cured, what would his wife and children do? Due to the immense pressure he carried in his heart, which he couldn't let go of, it further exacerbated the development of his illness, and he passed away within two months.

20. Sakyamuni - he is only one of the countless prophets and sages in human history, while we are the latecomers. The difference between the Buddha and us is not in terms of personality or status, but merely in the difference of the concept of 'enlightenment'. As Han Yu said, 'Understanding the way comes in sequence.'

21. The issue merely lies in the fact that some religions can only provide短暂的 (short-lived), 少数 (few) happiness, while others can offer永恒的 (eternal), 多数 (majority) happiness. Buddhism is one of the few religions that belongs to the latter category.

22. I replied to him like this: "If all cancer patients are frightened to death, then there are also quite a few cancer patients who can stabilize their mindset. Does this mean that these patients won't be taken away by cancer either?"

23. In Buddhism, 'truth' is considered to have no borders, and it does not require any religious 'branding'. It does not belong to any particular religion or to any individual in any era. Therefore, the truth spoken by the Buddha is not exclusively his, because the Buddha is merely a ' discoverer of truth,' just like the 'gravitational pull' discovered by Newton was not exclusively Newton's. Thus, Buddhism believes that all rational, eternal, and unchanging principles are part of 'Dharma' (the teachings of the Buddha).

24. There are some cancers, once diagnosed at an advanced stage, even without fear, the patient will not live for more than three months, such as pancreatic cancer, which is the king of all cancers. Once diagnosed, the life expectancy is rarely more than three months. And the patient is tortured by pain to the point of near death.

25. However, God's words are always right, and the consequences of defying God's words are always so tragic. But God himself does not reflect on his own 'words' - are they reasonable? Are they self-contradictory? Are they too arbitrary? Too authoritarian?

26. Even Shakyamuni Buddha cannot turn stones into gold like a magician. He advocates, "What you harvest, you must first plant." He cannot make a mango tree grow apples. If you want to harvest apples, you must first plant the seeds of apples. Shakyamuni Buddha merely tells you how to cultivate so that you can reap abundant harvests in the future, but the actual cultivation work still has to be done by yourself.

27. The "Addition to the Exemplary Selections" says: "While others ride horses and I ride donkeys. Upon careful reflection, I find myself not as good, but looking back, there are still those who carry loads on their backs."

28. In fact, walking so fast, it's not an exaggeration to say that the old clock died of cancer. However, one can't truly understand the difficulty of the situation until they have experienced it. It's easy to advise others to be strong, but it's much harder to face it without fear for oneself. When an unexpected disaster strikes, no one can be prepared for it with a long process of thought, and it's unlikely that anyone can face death with calmness. Those who say they are not afraid are just saying lies. And those who were not scared to death are just lucky.

29. 5, Clinical. Essentially, there are very few cases of schizophrenia patients developing cancer. I have seen several cancer patients who became vegetative due to other reasons, and their cancer did not progress; the final cause of death was not cancer.

30. The direct cause of death for cancer patients is not directly related to mental health, but psychological factors have a significant impact on the progression of cancer. Therefore, in clinical practice, doctors will not directly inform the patients of their cancer condition. We usually inform the patient's family, allowing them to decide whether the patient can endure it, as only the closest family members truly understand the patient's psychological tolerance. Sometimes, doctors may cooperate with the family in telling "kind lies," which, at its core, is also aimed at making the patient happy and joyful, benefiting the recovery from the disease. That is why many studies now focus on the psychological health treatment of cancer patients.

31. "Huh? Oh, no, I'm sorry, of course God knew that Eve would not withstand the temptation beforehand. After all, He is the omnipotent and omniscient Lord! I really should be cursed for just now, when I dared to say that He didn't know beforehand." My friend turned the situation around, but he didn't realize that the other side was also a dead end!

32. This point also represents a fundamental difference between Buddhism and other religions. Other religions can only acknowledge their 'unique and only' god and strive to attack and deny the gods of other religions, calling them 'false gods'.

33. 2, Anxiety. This is also a common psychological state among the vast majority of cancer patients. The whole family being in chaos, running around between several hospitals, seeking medical treatment and remedies from all over the country, are all reasons that can trigger anxiety in the patients.

34. 3, Collapse. At the beginning, the patient experiences fear and anxiety. In the final stage of the illness, the most deadly psychological change is a mental collapse. Once it occurs, the patient can only maintain this state for a few days.

35. Let's talk about cancer. If the patient does not have other diseases such as severe malignant hypertension, cerebrovascular disease, or aortic aneurysm, then cancer patients will not die of fear alone just because they hear that they have cancer. Some people might say that cancer is so terrifying and incurable that everyone would be frightened half to death upon hearing it. If it's half to death, that means they are still alive and didn't die of fear. In fact, this is just a metaphorical way to describe the extent of fear and anxiety. It is necessary to admit that many people will experience obvious psychological stress after hearing they have cancer, some will become angry and frustrated, some may become depressed and anxious, lose their appetite, eat poorly, have difficulty sleeping, and so on. All these are possible. Some people may have psychological problems, while others may have stronger psychological resilience. Although they may feel sad and upset, they can still handle it well. Some people may be completely unable to understand and a very few may even resort to extreme measures like suicide, but this is clearly an isolated case, and the most fundamental reason is actually the individual's ability to cope with stress. People like this may not only commit suicide due to cancer but also due to other unexpected events, so it is fundamentally incorrect to say that most cancer patients die of fear. The so-called statistics showing that Chinese cancer patients do not die directly from cancer but from fear are purely imaginative and unfounded.

36. Adam and Eve were thus confusedly driven out in this manner. We have also suffered in confusion following them.

37. Under their doctrine, no matter how hard humans strive, they can never be on an equal footing with God, nor can they ride side by side with Him (they will always be in a master-servant relationship). Because God is the Creator, and humans are merely one of the 'creatures' created by God.

38. Siddhartha Gautama was an ordinary person. His surname was Gautama, and his name was Siddhartha. He was born in the 6th century BC in northern India, which is now about 200 kilometers from the southern border of Nepal, in a place called Lumbini, near Kadman.

39. This statement makes sense, otherwise, hospitals would not have a medical protection system and keep cancer diagnoses secret from patients. The author has seen many examples, and a recent case is particularly typical. Li Mou, a 70-year-old male, came to the clinic due to weakness when walking. Physical examination showed no positive signs, and biochemical blood sodium and blood chloride levels were both low. Intravenous fluid maintenance was provided. The patient felt good and would compare his strength before each round of intravenous infusion. He was very satisfied with the treatment. On the fourth day, the patient's sclera suddenly turned yellow, and an MRI of the liver revealed a 3x4 cm mass at the hepatic hilum. After learning about this, the patient refused treatment and died two days later at home. This example is sufficient to show that if the patient is unaware, he may live with the tumor. However, upon learning the truth, the fear, anxiety, and tension caused by cancer can lead to sympathetic nervous system activation and excessive secretion of adrenal hormones, resulting in palpitations, heart palpitations, sleepiness, and fainting, which can accelerate the progression of the disease and lead to death.

40. I really didn't expect it, but Mom managed to live for a full three years. She didn't die from cancer either; it was a fall that caused her to break five ribs. A month later, she fell again, and the drain tube was pulled out completely.

41. There is a significant difference in the perception of death between the Chinese and foreigners, which is related to racial concepts, education, and the regular education on the laws of life, old age, illness, and death. It should be said that the Chinese are relatively afraid of death, and the more afraid they are, the quicker they seem to die. Maintaining an optimistic mood is conducive to extending the lifespan of cancer patients.

42. Finally, what I would like to clarify, which is the most representative of the spirit of Buddhism's 'true equality,' is the concept of equality in Buddhism, which is not limited to sentient beings. Buddhism opposes the notion that "all animals outside of humans are created solely for humans to satisfy their desires for food and drink." The悲鸣哀号 of animals at the moment of death is truly heartbreaking and不忍目睹,更不忍听闻, even Mencius had to express his sorrow with the words: 'Upon hearing their cries, I cannot bear to eat their flesh.'

43. In fact, anyone with a bit of thought can quickly understand that 'God' is also a product of human thought, and humans create gods based on their own ideas and images. One of the purposes of humans creating 'God' is to explain the 'origin of the universe and life', which the Buddhist teachings refer to as 'the first cause'. However, where does 'God' itself come from? Not only do followers of other religions not want to investigate this, but they are very certain in saying: 'God is omnipotent and He exists naturally.'

44. According to some religious beliefs, the universe and all things within it were created by the omnipotent Lord, and their evidence is the "Book of Genesis" in the Old Testament.

45. "The reason is that God wanted to test Adam and Eve to see if they would listen to His words."

46. This allowance and encouragement by Buddhism for believers to freely doubt and question the teachings of the religious leader, and to delve deeper into the spirit of exploration, I believe is unparalleled in the world?

47. For example, if you cannot become an official, it may be that heaven does not want you to endure the intrigues and power struggles in the officialdom, the others' calculations, and the煎熬 of cunning and strife.

48. I think that there are still some students who are not clear about the meanings of ' boundless mercy without discrimination' (yúyuán dàcì) and ' boundless compassion with one's own body' (tóngtǐ dàpì). Here, I should briefly explain them:

49. Although there was no evidence in the end, Tang Boyu was ultimately disqualified from taking the exam and never employed due to the overwhelming public opinion and the great suspicion against him. From then on, he was completely excluded from the officialdom, and his future prospects were utterly dark.

50. 'Well, since the all-knowing and all-powerful Lord knew beforehand that Eve could not withstand the temptation of the serpent, yet He allowed the serpent to entice her without stopping it, and even punished them afterward. Is this not malevolent intention, deliberately leading them into sin?'

51. Siddhartha Gautama attributed his enlightenment, achievements, and expertise entirely to his own efforts and intelligence. Siddhartha believed that a person's fortune or misfortune, success or failure, honor or dishonor depend on their own good or bad actions and whether they exert effort. No one can elevate me to heaven, nor can anyone push me into hell. Praise and adoration cannot lead to the alleviation of suffering and joy; only by walking firmly on the path of cultivating the mind and refining one's nature can one purify and elevate their character, and experience the joy of peace and righteousness.

52. Therefore, the concept of 'beginning' is meaningful only in relation to a specific thing; it has no meaning in the context of the entire intricate, interconnected, and causally linked universe. Time flows ceaselessly; who can find a point that is stationary, what we call 'the present'? Then say that this point is the 'beginning'?

53. What is the principle behind the concept of being scared to death by cancer? It is that the spiritual pillar collapses, leading to extreme tension, fear of death, a sharp decline in the immune system, being distraught, and ultimately, death! There is some truth to doctors keeping secrets from cancer patients, at least in terms of protecting the patient's expectations of prolonging life.

54. Although the direct cause of death for cancer patients is either the symptoms of the cancer itself or some serious complications, almost no one dies immediately upon hearing the news.

55. The news reached the unit, and all the colleagues opened their mouths wide in disbelief. Old Zhong, such a healthy person, doesn't smoke and doesn't cook to inhale smoke, how could it be lung cancer, and even in the late stage?!

56. Friends, truth does not permit coercion in acceptance. To force someone to accept something they do not understand or like is politics, not religion. Truth can only reveal its spirit and value more fully through repeated speculation under the premise of democracy and freedom.

57. As the ancients said, 'A prodigal son who returns is priceless.' Parents in the world always keep their doors open, hoping that their wayward children will turn back, even if their offspring is a sinner and a robber. There has never been a pair of parents who would wish or bear the thought of their children suffering eternally in the dark, fiery, and torturous hell.

58. Buddhism fundamentally denies the assumption of "God creating all things" and does not acknowledge that the universe has a first 'beginning.' What is called the 'beginning' of something is merely the 'end' of the previous thing. In a series of causal relationships, the disappearance of one thing constitutes the condition for the arising of another.

59. You feel that you are in pain, but there are people who are suffering even more. You feel that you are tired, but there are people who are more exhausted than you. You feel that your life is not going well, but there are those lying on their beds, facing death, whose lives are even less fortunate.

60. The blessings you are enjoying at this moment may turn into misfortunes in the future. The misfortunes you are suffering now might be the blessings of the future. Do not be obsessed with the blessings or misfortunes of a moment, believe that everything is the best arrangement, and that there is a divine will in the unknown. We cannot escape or bypass it; the only way is to accept it, which is the best attitude towards fate.

61. "There was a person who was injured by a poisoned arrow, and his relatives took him to see a surgeon. If that person had said at the time, 'I do not wish to have the arrow removed, for I want to know who shot me - was it a Kshatriya, a Brahmin, a Vaishya, or a Sudra? What is his name and lineage? Is he tall, short, or of medium height? Is his skin black, brown, or fair? Where does he come from? I will not have the arrow removed unless I know what bow was used to shoot me, what kind of bowstring it had, what type of arrow it was, and what material the arrow feathers were made of?' If he were to pursue such questions, he would surely die before obtaining these answers.' In reality, the issue is that the arrow should be removed first to treat the wound, so that death does not occur while waiting for answers. Therefore, Buddhism does not waste words and time in desperately pursuing the question of 'the first cause of the universe.' For pursuit is futile, and it is also of no benefit to life. These questions have no relation to the sufferings of birth, old age, illness, and death, and cannot lead to the joy of tranquility and liberation."

62. Sakyamuni preached for forty-nine years, discussed the scriptures in over three hundred sessions, all to point out to us a 'path to becoming a Buddha'—the path of creating the most thorough and perfect wisdom and character. However, this path requires that one must walk it themselves with perseverance, wisdom, and constancy. Therefore, the Buddha said, 'You must do the work yourselves, for I only teach you the path to take.'

63. Buddhism is like the vast ocean; it can accommodate all rivers, big and small, on Earth. That's why the Buddhist scriptures say, 'All things are within the Dharma!'

64. In the Buddhist scriptures, there is absolutely no record of the Buddha being angry, nor is there any such cruel and ruthless method of punishment. During the Buddha's forty-nine years of teaching, the disciples always saw their mentor as being amiable, compassionate, and serene. This was true for good people as well as for bad people.

65. But mother has jaundice all over her body, which is extremely itchy, and she has scratched herself until the skin is torn and the flesh is exposed. What should we do? We sought help from the county hospital for a tracheal intubation and drainage surgery. Immediately, mother felt no pain, no itching, no aching, no swelling; she could eat, drink, sleep, and walk. Sometimes, she even carried a drainage bag and could go out to work.

66. In the third point mentioned earlier, it has been mentioned that there is a distinction between the Buddha and sentient beings, which merely lies in the sequence of their awakening. Han Yu said, 'Learning has its own sequence.' This can be used as a supporting explanation.

67. In this world, blessings and misfortunes are interdependent and transform into each other. Where there is blessings, there lies the potential for misfortune, and where there is misfortune, there lies the hidden potential for blessings.

68. Among all the religions in the world, only the Buddha and the Buddhist scriptures are allowed to be questioned, discussed, and investigated.

69. The doctor still performed a blood gas analysis. After waiting for more than an hour, when I finally got the report, I stuck out my tongue: her various indicators were severely abnormal. Clearly, fear, tension, can trigger disorders in the endocrine system and severe metabolic disturbances. Even a healthy person could be scared to death.

70. In fact, we have known for a long time that mental illnesses can cause severe physical diseases. Conversely, good physical health can also promote the improvement of mood.
