2. The beautiful thing is, the slender and elegant nobleman in straight robes. A lovely maiden, deliberately not wearing that skirt, but just a shirt with many openings, hanging a sachet, with a long cord dragging, standing beside the stage with a fan covering her face. A young and beautiful woman, hanging the bottom of the summer curtain on the curtain pole, wearing a white silk single garment, with a light blue gauze robe over it, practicing her calligraphy there. A notebook made of thin paper, beautifully bound with village-dyed silk thread. Young willow twigs with sprouts tied with letters written on thin blue paper. In the amusingly dyed beard cage, there is a five-leaf pine tree.
3. However, what does "Makura no Sōshi" mean? There have been many interpretations over the years. Some people associate the character "makura" (pillow) with "makura no kotoba" (a fixed type of modifying word in Japanese poetry, usually consisting of five sounds, similar to an epithet in English), and consider it to mean "the grass of pillow words"; others believe that "makura" implies the meaning of "beside the pillow," making "Makura no Sōshi" a personal notebook kept beside one's pillow or something that people can flip through at will. Additionally, there are other various interpretations. But in any case, when comparing it to the content, it seems generally appropriate to consider "Makura no Sōshi" as a personal essay, miscellaneous notes, diaries, or hand-written records and the like.
4. Play should be done at night when the people across are not known.
5. –- Tagore
6. Spring is the 'best' time at dawn. The top of the hill, gradually lightening, begins to glow a bit, with purple clouds delicately hanging in the air, which is quite interesting.
7. In autumn, the water is as cool as the blue sky. There are a few wisps of clouds in the sky and a few ripples on the water. Between the sky and the water, there is clarity and warm air, carrying a hint of osmanthus fragrance. The shadows of the mountains are also more real. The mountains and waters of autumn are embracing each other in an ethereal manner. The mountains remain still, while the water makes a faint sound. That ancient city with its own charm, carrying this autumn color and sound, is Jinan, a poem.
8. "The Pillow Book" is a collection of essays from the Heian period of Japan. Together with "The Tale of Genji," it is hailed as a pair of masterpieces in the history of classical literature, and also represents the pinnacle of essay literature in contemporary literary history. Its refreshing and straightforward writing style, characterized by its diverse forms and free-flowing prose, has had a significant impact on the development of prose literature that followed.
9. (Wang Yizhu, excerpted from "Selections from Ancient Japanese Essays: Preface," People's Literature Publishing House, 1988 edition.)
10. Upon waking up in the morning, brew a bowl of strong tea, sit in the courtyard, and you can see an extremely high and emerald sky, and hear the flight of pigeons under the blue sky. From beneath the locust leaves, counting the thin threads of sunlight filtering through, or in the middle of a broken wall, quietly facing the blue flowers of the trumpet creeper (Chao Rong) like a trumpet, you can naturally feel the fullness of autumn.
11. Women who have no hope for the future, yet stubbornly adhere to a phantom happiness and live a life of complacency, are frustrating to the heart and should be scorned. Perhaps everyone has such a period in their life, feeling a bit like a Mary Sue, believing that they are always the exception, the special one. The difference lies in the timing when one recognizes the facts. You can be an exception, a special case, but the premise is whether you have put in equal effort.
12. Like many ancient works, the famous classic "The Pillow Book," which has been passed down for nearly a thousand years, still has some issues regarding its title, author, the time of its composition, and the circumstances of its creation that are yet to be further determined.

14. Living together, treating each other with politeness, praising each other as outstanding talents, yet finally not seeing each other. Such people are indeed rare. Whether men or women, wizards or monks, even if they make solemn promises and love each other, it is rather rare for them to remain good to the end.
15. Each season in a year has its own charm. ... Old age is the autumn of life. Even autumn has its own enchanting aspects, its own advantages.
16. Embrace the changing seasons of life's spring, summer, autumn, and winter, and learn to appreciate the beauty of autumn. In doing so, one will not be so deeply infatuated with the intensity of summer.
17. A woman who is not deeply loved, is in a bad mood, and has been suffering from a long-term illness, her man would definitely feel troubled.
18. Among the four seasons, I have a special preference for autumn, so I might as well talk about it. Autumn represents maturity, having surpassed the bright and lovely spring and the lush and dense summer, it is no longer surprising. Therefore, its colors are light, and the leaves are mostly yellow, exuding an ancient and rugged charm, not just vying for fame with lush greenery. This is what I mean by the essence of autumn.
19. Wash your hair, apply makeup, dress in clothes imbued with fragrance; even in places where no one sees, you feel extremely joyful in your heart.
20. The rain fell softly, with only a faint sound of dripping. The orange-colored houses, like resplendent old monks clad in robes, bowed their heads and closed their eyes, undergoing the baptism of the rain. The damp red bricks emitted a stimulating color reminiscent of pig's blood, contrasting sharply with the lush green leaves beneath the wall. The gray toads hopped around in the soggy, moldy mud; in the heavy net of autumn rain, they were the only things brimming with joy and vitality.
21. After the period of youth has passed, there will emerge a period of mature grace akin to autumn. At this time, the fruits of life await harvest in a beautiful, serene atmosphere, much like ripe rice waiting for the harvest.
22. Those who do not cherish autumn will not truly love spring; those who do not value the fruits will not truly love the flowers.
23. — Alighanov
24. Firstly, the current title of the book, "Makura no Sōshi," is unclear whether it was the original title by the author or was added by later generations. In the past, some only recorded the name of the author, Sei Shōnagon, while others called the book "Sei Shōnagon Makura no Sōshi," and some referred to it as "Sei Shōnagon Shū," among others. It was only later that the author's name was dropped, and it was simply called "Makura no Sōshi." As for the word "sōshi," it is written in different Chinese characters in Japanese: sometimes it is written as "sōshi," sometimes as "futaba," sometimes as "futabashi," and some say it is a phonetic transformation of "kikaku" (booklet). There is no definitive conclusion. "Sōshi" can be understood as a general book, as well as a draft or manuscript.
25. This is a very deep autumn, with a blue sky that is serene and distant. The sunlight is bright and piercing, soft and charming, and also pure, as if filtered.
26. Autumn is the best time in the evening. The setting sun shines brilliantly, and as it gets close to the mountains, crows start to head back to their nests, flying in pairs or small groups, all in a hurry, which is quite fascinating. Moreover, there are geese flying in formation, which, as you watch, seem to get smaller and smaller, truly amusing. After the sun sets, the sound of the wind and the chirping of insects, needless to say, are also particularly interesting.

28. It is the same person, but without emotions, it seems almost like a different person.
29. The spring dawn is beautiful. The mountain peaks gradually lighten, the sky beginning to brighten. The purple and red彩clouds become slender, stretching long and lying horizontally across the sky.
30. It is difficult to bring up the rumors about her accident in front of the grown-up girl, even if she hears them.
31. Everything about the author, even her name, is difficult to ascertain. To this day, people can only make some speculations about her background from her works themselves. There are not a few ancient great writers from both China and the West who fall into this category. Mr. Zhou Zuoren wrote an article titled "On Sei Shonagon" for this very purpose, which provides a comprehensive introduction to the author herself. It can be referred to; therefore, it will not be repeated here.
32. The abandoned house was overgrown with vines, and the brambles grew densely, bathed in the bright moonlight that shone upon them.
33. —— Proverb
34. Life on earth is like the changing seasons; one must go through this period of maturity... It should be known that the scenery of autumn is more magnificent and more surprising, and the joy of autumn is ten times more heroic, surprising, and magnificent.
35. The most charming is the autumn forest reflecting the setting sun. The blush of red is intoxicating, contrasting with the deepening dusk at the horizon. The evening breeze carries a clear coolness, as the dusk deepens, it is a very brilliant and melancholic beauty that makes you want to shed a few tears of sentimentality over your life experiences, yet you are captivated by the gradually fading intoxicating red, and are willing to condense your overflowing emotions.
36. Perhaps what I love is not the late autumn, but the early autumn, when the warmth begins to fade, the moon is full, the crabs are plump, the osmanthus is bright and clean, and it has not yet fallen into a cold and desolate state. This is the most enjoyable time. The mildness of that time, like the red ash on my cigarette, is just a warm fragrance that has been smoked. Or like a scholar who has shed the style of being astonishing with his pen, and gradually approaches maturity and skillfulness, his writing is profound and meaningful. This is the solid meaning of what Zhuangzi said, "The autumn is right and all treasures are accomplished."
