8. The depth and breadth of water, the height and distance of mountains, up and down, high and low - Confucius used this method of contrast to tell us the highest wisdom in dealing with people: to show benevolence while concealing wisdom. A person with benevolence should be as majestic, noble, and steady as a mountain, in order to better spread benevolence throughout the world. A person with wisdom should be as deep and unobtrusive as water, calm and undisturbed, in order to better accumulate and grow in strength, to be as lively and free as water. Since ancient times, many famous Chinese painters have been fond of landscapes. This is because they have deeply understood the profound philosophy contained in mountains and water. Mountains are independent and fearless; as long as they exist, they stand firmly on their own, not depending on or begging others, nor would they bow and kowtow to others for personal gain or for a small sum of money. Mountains are stable, and they know how to maintain themselves. Mountains adhere to principles and uphold their principles, demonstrating the noble sentiment of "knowing that it is impossible and still doing it."

13. Wisdom and benevolence complement each other, neither of which can be absent, just as mountains cannot be separated from water, and water cannot be separated from mountains. We should be as profound and vast as water, and as far-sighted as mountains, wise and knowing how to adapt, benevolent and maintaining a peaceful mind. People from all directions come to the mountains to take what they need, and the mountains generously give without favoritism.
