1. 若使天下兼相爱,爱人若爱其身,犹有不孝者乎?

1. If all people in the world loved each other, and loved others as they love themselves, would there still be anyone who is not filial?

2. 夫尚贤者,政之本也。

2. To honor the virtuous and the talented is the essence of good governance.

3. 商之道我有利,客无利,则客不存;我利大,客利小,则客不久;客有利,我无利,皮之不存,毛将安附?客我利相当,则客久存,我则久利!然双赢!

3. The way of business is that if I benefit but the customer does not, the customer will not survive; if I gain more but the customer gains less, the customer will not last long; if the customer gains but I do not, if the skin does not exist, where can the fur attach itself? If the customer and I both benefit equally, then the customer will last long, and I will gain long-term benefits! It's a win-win situation!

4. 是故君子自难而易彼,众人自易而难彼。

4. Therefore, a gentleman finds difficulty in himself and ease in others, while the common people find ease in themselves and difficulty in others.

5. 志不强者智不达,言不信者行不果。据财不能以分人者,不足与友。守道不笃,偏物不博,辩是非不察者,不足与游。

5. Those who are not resolute in their will cannot reach great wisdom, and those who do not speak with sincerity cannot act decisively. Those who cannot distribute wealth fairly are not worthy of friendship. Those who do not firmly adhere to moral principles, those who are not broad-minded in their appreciation of diverse things, and those who do not discern right from wrong are not worthy of companionship.

6. 名不可简而成也,誉不可巧而立也,君子以身戴行者也。

6. Names cannot be simplified to be established, reputations cannot be artificially acquired, and a gentleman upholds his conduct through his own actions.

7. 爱人者必见爱也,而恶人者必见恶也。

7. He who loves will be loved, and he who hates will be hated.

8. 节俭则昌,淫佚则亡。有能则举之,无能则下之。

8. Frugality brings prosperity, while excess leads to ruin. Those who are capable should be promoted, and those who are not capable should be demoted.

9. 言则称于汤文,行则譬于狗豨。

9. In words, they praise the virtue of Tang Wen, but in actions, they are likened to dogs and swine.

10. 勇,志之所以敢也。

10. Bravery is the reason why one dares.

11. 染于苍则苍,染于黄则黄。

11. It turns blue when dyed with indigo, and turns yellow when dyed with yellow.

12. 染千苍则苍,染于黄刚黄。

12. If dyed with blue, it turns blue; if dyed with yellow, it turns yellow.

13. 天欲人之相爱相利,而不欲人之相恶相贼也。

13. The heavens desire that people should love and benefit each other, and do not desire that people should hate and harm each other.

15. 诌谀在侧,善议障塞,则国危矣。

16. The waters of rivers are not from a single source; the fur of a thousand ounces of robe is not from the white fur of a single fox.

17. 赖其力者生,不赖其力者不生?>

17. He who relies on his strength shall live, but he who does not rely on his strength shall not live?

18. 天下之人皆不能相爱,强必执弱、富必侮贫、贵必敖贱、诈必欺愚。凡天下祸篡怨恨其所以起者以不相爱生也。

18. All people in the world cannot love each other; the strong must subdue the weak, the rich must mock the poor, the noble must disdain the humble, and the cunning must cheat the foolish. All the disasters, rebellions, and grudges in the world arise from the lack of love among people.

19. 虽天亦不辨贫富贵贱远迩亲疏,贤者举而尚之,不肖者抑而废之。

19. Whether it be heaven or earth, they do not differentiate between rich and poor, noble and humble, distant and close, nor between the virtuous and the unworthy; the virtuous are promoted, and the unworthy are suppressed and discarded.

20. 人不分幼长贵贱,皆天只臣也。

20. All people, regardless of age, status, or wealth, are merely subjects of heaven.

21. 良弓难张,然可以及高人深;良马难乘,然可以任重致远。

21. It is difficult to draw a good bow, yet it can reach the profound; it is difficult to ride a good horse, yet it can carry heavy loads to distant places.

22. 民有三息:饥者不得食,寒者不得衣,劳者不得息。

22. The three fundamental needs of the people are: those who are hungry cannot eat, those who are cold cannot wear clothes, and those who are exhausted cannot rest.

23. 不胜其任,而处其位,非此位之人也。

23. Unable to胜任 the responsibilities, yet occupying the position—it is not someone who belongs in this position.

24. 心无备虑,不可以应卒。

24. Without careful preparation, one cannot respond to emergencies.

25. 少见黑曰黑,多见黑曰白,则以此人不知白黑之辩矣;少尝苦曰苦,多尝苦曰甘,则必以此人为不知甘苦之辩矣。

25. If someone sees a black color only when it is rare and calls it black, and sees a black color often and calls it white, then it can be said that this person does not know the distinction between black and white; if someone tastes something bitter only when it is infrequent and calls it bitter, and tastes something bitter frequently and calls it sweet, then it must be concluded that this person does not know the distinction between sweet and bitter.

26. 善无主于心者不留,行莫辩于身者不立。

26. Virtue that does not take root in the heart will not endure, and actions that cannot be justified by oneself will not stand.

27. 列德而尚贤,虽在农与工肆之人,有能择举之。

27. Respect for virtue and talents, even among farmers and workers, will enable them to be selected for their abilities.

28. 为其所难者,必得其所欲焉;未闻为其所欲,而免其所恶者也。

28. If one endures what is difficult, they will surely attain what they desire; but I have never heard of someone avoiding what they dislike by pursuing what they desire.

29. 夫知者,必尊天事鬼,爱人节用,合焉为知矣。

29. A wise person must respect heavenly matters and ghosts, love people, and be thrifty. When these are harmoniously integrated, it constitutes wisdom.

30. 仓无备粟,不可以待凶饥。

30. There is no stored grain, and it is not possible to wait out a severe famine.

31. 君子战虽有陈,而勇为本焉;丧虽有礼,而哀为本焉;士虽有学,而行为本焉。

31. A gentleman, in battle, may have plans, but bravery is the essence; in mourning, he may follow rituals, but genuine sorrow is the essence; a scholar, though educated, should prioritize practical action as the essence.

32. 力,形之所以奋也。圆,一中同长也。

32. Force is the reason why shapes can be activated. A circle, in the middle, is of uniform length.

33. 钓者之恭,非为鱼赐也;饵鼠以虫,非爱之也。

33. The humility of a fisherman is not because of the fish's favor; using insects to bait a mouse is not because of love for it.

34. 若是上利天,中利鬼,下利人,三利而无所不利,是谓天德。故凡从此事者,圣知也,仁义也,惠忠也,慈孝也。是故聚天下之善名而加之。

34. If it benefits the heavens above, the spirits in the middle, and the people below, and brings advantage in all three realms without any disadvantage, this is called the virtue of heaven. Therefore, anyone who engages in this matter is wise, benevolent, righteous, generous, loyal, compassionate, and filial. Hence, all the good names of the world are gathered and bestowed upon them.

35. 利人乎即为,不利人乎即止。

35. If it benefits others, then proceed; if it does not benefit others, then stop.

36. 其友皆好矜奋,创作比周,则家日损,身日危,名日辱。

36. All of his friends are fond of boasting and competing. If they engage in creating alliances, the family will gradually diminish, their own safety will be at risk, and their reputation will be tarnished day by day.

37. 视人之身,若视其身。

37. Behold the body of others as you would behold your own body.

38. 甘井近竭,招木近伐,灵龟近灼,神蛇近暴。

38. The sweet well is near exhaustion, the inviting tree is near being cut down, the spiritual turtle is near being burned, and the divine snake is near being violent.

39. 吏不治则乱,农事缓则贫。

39. If officials do not govern properly, chaos will ensue; if agricultural affairs are delayed, poverty will result.

40. 听其言,迹其行,察其所能而慎予官。

40. Hear their words, trace their actions, assess their abilities, and carefully grant them offices.

41. 天子唯能壹同天下之义,是以天下治也。

41. The Son of Heaven is the only one who can unify the righteousness of the entire world, and therefore the world is governed in order.

42. 利之中取大,害之中取小。

42. Take the greatest good from benefits, and the least harm from disadvantages.

43. 官无常贵,民无终贱。

43. There is no permanent nobility among officials, and no permanent lowliness among the people.

44. 江河不恶小谷之满己也,故能大。圣人者,事无辞也,物无违也,故能为天下器。

44. Rivers do not begrudge the filling of the small valleys, hence they are able to be grand. The sage does not turn away from any task, nor does he resist any thing, thus he can be the instrument for the world.

45. 良马难乘,然可以任重致远;良才难令,然可以致君见尊。

45. It is difficult to ride a good horse, but it can carry heavy loads and travel long distances; it is challenging to command a talented person, but it can lead to a ruler's recognition and respect.

46. 库无备兵,虽有义不能征无义。

46. Without a reserve force, even with righteousness, one cannot summon the unrighteous.

47. 志不强者智不达,言不信者行不果。

47. A person with weak will is intellectually limited, and one who lacks trustworthiness is indecisive in action.

48. 志不强者智不达,言不信者行不果,仁人之所以为事者,必兴天下之利,除天下之害。

48. Those who lack ambition cannot achieve wisdom; those who do not speak with integrity cannot act decisively. The reason why a benevolent person undertakes tasks is to promote the benefits of the world and eliminate its harms.

49. 故大人之务,将在于众贤而已。

49. Therefore, the duty of the wise and learned is to seek the company of many virtuous individuals.

50. 甘井近竭,招木近伐。

50. The sweet well is near depletion, the inviting tree is near to be cut down.

51. 虽天亦不辨贫富、贵贱、远迩、亲疏,贤者举而尚之,不肖者抑而废之。

51. Even the heaven does not distinguish between the rich and the poor, the noble and the humble, the distant and the near, the close and the distant; it elevates the virtuous and suppresses the unworthy.

52. 无不让也,不可,说在殆。

52. Not to be left undone, not permissible, as it is said in danger.

53. 古之圣王之治天下也,其所富,其所贵,未必王公大人骨肉之亲、无故富贵、面目美好者也。

53. In the governance of ancient wise kings, those who are rich and those who are honored are not necessarily the blood relatives of princes and nobles, nor are they those who have wealth without cause or those with beautiful appearances.

54. 老而无妻子者,有所侍养,以终其寿;幼弱孤童之无父母者,有所放依,以长其身。

54. Those who are old and childless, if they have someone to support them, will live out their lives; and those young orphans without parents, if they have somewhere to seek refuge, will grow up.

55. 而天下皆曰其力也,必不能曰我见命焉。

55. Yet when all the world says it is due to his strength, one must necessarily not say, "I see my fate in it."

56. 天下之人皆相爱,强不执弱,众不劫寡,富不侮贫,贵不傲贱,诈不欺愚。

56. All people in the world should love each other, the strong should not oppress the weak, the many should not oppress the few, the rich should not insult the poor, the noble should not be haughty towards the humble, and the cunning should not deceive the naive.

57. 繁饰有命,以教众愚朴之人。

57. Adorned with commandments, to instruct the simple-minded folk.

58. 志不强者智不达。

58. Those who are not resolute cannot attain great wisdom.

59. 士虽有学,而行为本焉。

59. Even though scholars have knowledge, their actions are rooted in practicality.
