15. 陈平害怕，就脱掉衣服裸了上身帮助撑船，船夫知道他没有财物，就消了杀念。陈平到了修武归顺汉军。通过魏无知求见汉王，汉王召他入见。当时，万石君石奋任中涓职，引陈平进见。陈平等十人一同进见，受汉王赐予饮食。

The ruler said, "You, son, can be called one who does not betray his roots!" He then rewarded Wei Wu again.

20. 平曰：“嗟乎，使平得宰天下，亦如此肉矣！”陈涉起王，使周市略地，立魏咎为魏王，与秦军相攻于临济。平已前谢兄伯，从少年往事魏王咎，为太仆。说魏王，王不听。人或谗之，平亡去。项羽略地至河上，平往归之，从入破秦，赐爵卿。项羽之东王彭城也，汉王还定三秦而东。
20. Ping said, "Alas, if Ping could rule the world, it would be as good as this meat!" Chen She rose to power and sent Zhou Shi to conquer territory, establishing Wei Jiu as the King of Wei and fighting against the Qin army at Linji. Ping first thanked his elder brother Bo and then followed the young men to serve King Wei Jiu as the Grand Eunuch. He tried to persuade the King, but the King would not listen. Some people slandered him, and Ping fled. Xiang Yu conquered territory to the Yellow River, and Ping went to join him, participating in the defeat of the Qin army and being granted the title of Marquis. When Xiang Yu became the Eastern King of Pengcheng, the Han King returned to stabilize the Three Shaanxi regions and moved east.
21. 高帝问诸将意见，诸将说“：赶快发兵活埋了这小子。”高帝不吭声，又问陈平，陈平再三推辞问“：诸将说什么？”皇上如实告知，陈平问：“那人上书告发韩信谋反，有人知道此事吗？”回答“：没有。”又问：“韩信知道这事吗？”“不知道。”陈平再问：“陛下军队与楚相比谁的精锐？”皇帝说“：我的比不过。”

Chen Ping repeatedly declined and asked, "What did the generals say?" The emperor truthfully told him. Chen Ping asked, "That person wrote a letter accusing Han Xin of rebellion; does anyone know about this?" The answer was, "No." He then asked, "Does Han Xin know about this?" "He doesn't know," was the response. Chen Ping asked again, "Whose elite troops are superior, yours or the Chu's?" The emperor replied, "Mine are not as good."
22. 顾问御史：“曲逆户口几何？”对曰：“始秦时三万余户，间者兵数起，多亡匿，今见五千余户。”于是诏御史，更封平为曲逆侯，尽食之，除前所食户牖。平自初从，至天下定后，常以护军中尉从击臧荼、陈豨、黥布。凡六出奇计，辄益邑封。奇计或颇秘，世莫得闻也。
22. Advisor御史: "How many households are there in Quinu?" The reply was: "At the beginning of the Qin Dynasty, there were more than 30,000 households. In recent years, there have been frequent military uprisings, resulting in many people fleeing and hiding. Now there are more than 5,000 households." Then the emperor issued an edict to the御史, changing the title of Ping to Marquis of Quinu, and allowing him to govern all the territory, excluding the households he had previously governed. Ping, from the very beginning, until the peace was restored after the world was unified, always served as the Commander-in-Chief of the Guard from the central command, accompanying the emperor in battles against Zhang Tu, Chen Xi, and Qing Bu. In all, he came up with six ingenious plans, which always resulted in an increase in his land and titles. Some of these plans were very secretive, and the world did not hear of them.
23. 绛侯、灌婴等都向汉王说陈平的坏话“：陈平虽外表俊美，犹如帽上玉石，腹中未必有实才。听说陈平在家时和嫂子私通，投奔魏国不见容，就逃亡归属楚国，在楚不合意，又逃亡投奔汉王。如今大王授他高官，让他监督诸将。听说陈平对待诸将，送他金钱多的就能得到善待，送金钱少的就待遇差些。
23. But he was not well-received in Chu either, so he fled again to seek the Han King. Now that the King has granted him a high position, allowing him to supervise the generals. It is said that Chen Ping treats the generals according to the amount of money they give him. Those who give more money are treated better, while those who give less are treated worse.
24. 大王若舍得出几万斤黄金，用反间计，离间他们君臣，使他们心有怀疑，项王为人好猜忌容易相信谗言，必然使内部互相残杀。那时汉趁势发兵进攻，必定能攻破楚国。”汉王认为有道理，于是拨出黄金四万斤交给陈平，由他任意使用，不再过问黄金的进出。
24. If the Great King were to spare a few tens of thousands of jin of gold and use the strategy of "turning against the enemy within," he could sow discord between their ruler and his ministers, causing them to doubt each other. Since Xiang Yu is a man who is suspicious and easily believes in slander, it is certain that internal strife would break out among them. The Han King considered this to be reasonable and thus allocated forty thousand jin of gold to Chen Ping, allowing him to use it at his discretion without further inquiry into the in and out of the gold.

Zhang Nü replied, "How could someone as talented as Chen Ping remain poor and lowly for long?" In the end, she married her granddaughter to Chen Ping. Since Chen Ping was poor, she borrowed money to help him with the betrothal expenses, and also provided the costs for the wine and meat needed for the wedding.

27. 早年的陈平可谓是生活非常凄惨，经常连饭都吃不饱，只能去哥哥家蹭饭吃还被嫂嫂嫌弃。后来陈平用了招婚的计谋娶到了曾嫁过五次丈夫家身亡的张氏美女。从此仰仗让张家家大业大的特点从乡里分肉的小官做起一步一步参加革命。开始时在魏王手下服役，但是他上述的真知灼见非但不能被为王采纳而且还屡遭小人陷害，为了保命只能辞别投靠项羽。后来看不惯项羽的所作所为，转而投到了刘邦麾下才开始了自己建功立业的生涯。

34. 盗嫂、受金又安足疑乎？”汉王召平而问曰：“吾闻先生事魏不遂，事楚而去，今又从吾游，信者固多心乎？”平曰：“臣事魏王，魏王不能用臣说，故去事项王。项王不信人，其所任爱，非诸项即妻之昆弟，虽有奇士不能用。臣居楚闻汉王之能用人，故归大王。裸身来，不受金无以为资。

I came with nothing but my bare body, and without accepting gold, I had no means to support myself."
35. 此后吕须女的谗言就不能得逞。樊哙送到，即被赦免，恢复爵位封邑。惠帝六年(前189)，相国曹参去世，安国侯王陵任右丞相，陈平为左丞相。王陵是沛县人，原是县里豪俊，高祖贫微时拿王陵当兄长待。

36. 朋友共苦，除非同命相怜，不然总有高低，雪中送炭，贵在送真炭，而不只是语言的劝慰。

37. 汉王仁孝宽厚，不要因我而存二心。我以死为使者送行。”于是伏剑而死。项王恼怒，烹煮了王陵母亲。王陵终于追随汉王平定天下。因为和雍齿关系好，雍齿是高祖痛恨之人，王陵又原本没有归从汉王之意，因此迟迟才受封为安国侯。王陵秉性质朴，纵任意气，好说直话。当右丞相二年，惠帝去世。

Wang Ling was honest and straightforward, fond of speaking his mind. In the second year of the Marquis of You, Emperor Huai died.

Ping said, "If陛下 decides to wage war, is there anyone who can match Han Xin's abilities?" The sovereign replied, "No one can compare." Ping then commented, "Now, the soldiers are not as skilled as the ones in Chu, and neither is the general, yet to launch an attack against them would be to court battle, and I secretly worry for陛下."
42. 陈平提的建议，魏王不曾采纳。又有人在魏王前进谗言，陈平离开魏王。项羽攻战到黄河边上，陈平前去投奔他，跟随入关破秦，受赐爵卿。项羽东归彭城为王时，汉王回师平定三秦再向东进。殷王背叛楚国，项羽就封陈平为信武君，统率魏王咎在楚的旧部前去攻打，殷王投降后回来。
42. The suggestions made by Chen Ping were not accepted by King Wei. Moreover, someone spoke ill of King Wei in his presence, and Chen Ping left King Wei. When Xiang Yu's army reached the Yellow River, Chen Ping went to join him, followed him into the pass to defeat the Qin, and was granted the title of Marquis. When Xiang Yu returned to Pengcheng to be king, the Han King returned to his army to pacify the Three Shaan provinces before moving east. When King Yin betrayed the Chu, Xiang Yu appointed Chen Ping as the Marquis of Xinwu, leading the former troops of King Jiao of Wei in the Chu to attack, and upon King Yin's surrender, Chen Ping returned.
43. 顾楚有可乱者，彼项王骨鲠之臣亚父、钟离<目末>、龙且、周殷之属，不过数人耳。大王能出捐数万斤金，行反间，间其君臣，以疑其心，项王为人意忌信谗，必内相诛。汉因举兵而攻之，破楚必矣。”汉王以为然，乃出黄金四万斤予平，恣所为，不问出入。

44. 汉王谓平曰：“天下纷纷，何时定乎？”平曰：“项王为人，恭敬爱人，士之廉节好礼者多归之。至于行功赏爵邑，重之，士亦以此不附。今大王嫚而少礼，士之廉节者不来；然大王能饶人以爵邑，士之顽顿耆利无耻者亦多归汉。诚各去两短，集两长，天下指麾即定矣。然大王资侮人，不能得廉节之士。
44. The Han King said to Ping, "The world is in chaos, when will it be stabilized?" Ping replied, "Xiang Yu is a man who is respectful and loving towards others, and many upright and well-mannered scholars are drawn to him. However, when it comes to rewarding merit and bestowing titles and land, he is overly generous, and scholars are also repelled by this. Now, Your Majesty is disdainful and lacks etiquette, so scholars who value integrity and propriety do not come to you. Yet, if Your Majesty can bestow titles and land on others, many of those stubborn, greedy, and shameless scholars will also return to Han. If we truly discard our two shortcomings and gather our two strengths, the world will be stabilized with a mere gesture. However, Your Majesty has the character of belittling others, and thus cannot attract scholars who value integrity and propriety."
45. 高帝从击布军还，病创，徐行至长安。燕王卢绾反，上使樊哙以相国将兵击之。既行，人有短恶哙者。高帝怒曰：“哙见吾病，乃几我死也！”用平计，召绛侯周勃受诏床下，曰：“陈平乘驰传载勃代哙将，平至军中即斩哙头！”
45. The Great Emperor returned from fighting against the rebel army of Bu, suffering from wounds and illness, and slowly made his way to Chang'an. The King of Yan, Lu Wan, rebelled, and the emperor sent Fan Kui, as the Prime Minister, to lead the army against him. After he left, there were some who spoke ill of Fan Kui. The Great Emperor was angry and said, "Fan Kui saw that I was ill and nearly killed me!" He used the plan suggested by Ping, and summoned Marquis Zhou Bo to receive an imperial edict on his sickbed, saying, "Chen Ping will ride in a swift carriage to take command from Kui. Once he arrives at the army, he is to behead Kui!"
46. 乡里社祭，陈平主持分配祭肉，分得很公平，乡里父老说：“好哇，陈家这孩子主宰不错！”陈平说：“唉，要是让陈平主宰天下，我也会像分这祭品一样！”陈涉起义为王，派周攻城略地，立了魏咎为魏王，与秦军在临济交战。陈平在此前就辞别兄长陈伯，和些青年前往投奔魏王咎，被任为太仆。
46. In the village communal sacrifice, Chen Ping was in charge of distributing the sacrificial meat, and he distributed it very fairly. The elders of the village said, "Wonderful, Chen family's child is a good leader!" Chen Ping said, "Alas, if I were to rule the world, I would distribute it just like I distributed these sacrificial offerings!" Chen She rose in rebellion and became king, sending Zhou to conquer cities and territories, and established Wei Jue as the King of Wei. He fought against the Qin army at Linji. Before this, Chen Ping had bid farewell to his brother Chen Bo and, with some young men, went to join King Wei Jue of Wei, and was appointed as the Grand Steward.
47. 于是汉王与语而说之，问曰：“子居楚何官？”平曰：“为都尉。”是日拜平为都尉，使参乘，典护军。诸将尽讙，曰：“大王一日得楚之亡卒，未知高下，而即与共载，使监护长者！”汉王闻之，愈益幸平，遂与东伐项王。至彭城，为楚所败，引师而还。收散兵至荥阳，以平为亚将，属韩王信，军广武。
47. The Han King conversed with him and was pleased, asking, "What position did you hold in Chu?" Ping replied, "I was a Duwei (commander)." That day, Ping was appointed as a Duwei, tasked with being a chariot companion and overseeing the army. The other generals were in an uproar, saying, "The King has gained a former Chu deserter in a day, but he doesn't know whether he is good or bad, and he is already allowing him to ride with him, making him a guardian over the elders!" Upon hearing this, the Han King was even more favorably disposed towards Ping, and so they embarked on an eastward campaign against Xiang Wang. They reached Pengcheng, where they were defeated by the Chu forces, and they led their troops back. After gathering scattered soldiers, they reached Yingyang, where Ping was appointed as a deputy general, subordinate to Han Wang Xin, and stationed at Guangwu.
