1. Let's first talk about the prerequisites for cultivating Qi. Kou Zongxi in the Song Dynasty, in his book "Explanation of the Compendium of Materia Medica," said: "The essence of human life lies in Qi and blood, and no illness can occur without first harming the Qi and blood." This means that only when there is a problem with a person's Qi and blood will diseases follow. Therefore, it is said in "Channel of the Spiritual Pivot": "Qi must flow continuously, just like water flowing." This means that Qi, like water, must flow; otherwise, it will become polluted and rotten, becoming a source of disease. "The Canon of Internal Medicine" says: "Channels are the means to determine life and death, to treat various diseases, to adjust excess and deficiency, and they cannot be blocked." It also says: "Obstruction of Qi and blood leads to the birth of disease, and the flow of Qi and blood restores health." This shows that Qi must rely on meridians and Qi channels for movement. If the meridians are blocked, the movement of Qi and blood will be obstructed, so opening up the meridians is the primary task of cultivating Qi. Of course, opening up the meridians requires specific external forms. The first system of Yi Taiji emphasizes the accuracy of channel畅通, as the obstruction of meridians makes it difficult to carry out tasks such as absorbing and circulating Qi.
2. Every movement should reflect the principle of "gradual progression," as this is the most distinctive characteristic of Tai Chi. Many people are aware of the phrase in the " Boxing Treatise " that reads, "Its root is in the feet, originates from the legs, is controlled by the waist, and manifests in the fingers." However, to truly embody this principle in action is not an easy task. Firstly, one must understand the true meaning of these two sentences. The root is in the feet, but the key is how to establish a firm foundation. If the posture of the拳架 does not align with the optimal stress distribution of the bones, it will be difficult to establish a root. Moreover, since the bones and joints are not aligned, it is impossible to progress through each section, and thus, the principle of "gradual progression" cannot be demonstrated. Additionally, the key to practicing "gradual progression" is to progress through each section sequentially, meaning that there are changes in the concept of "yinyang" (the interplay of emptiness and substance) during the practice. For instance, when progressing from the shoulder to the elbow, the elbow becomes substantial, while the shoulder should transition from substantial to empty, and when progressing to the hand, the elbow should again transition from substantial to empty. In one arm, there is a blend of substance and emptiness, with substance within emptiness and emptiness within substance. This aligns with the principles of Tai Chi, as the saying goes, "There is no place where Tai Chi is not present," meaning that Tai Chi is constantly changing between substance and emptiness. This also aligns with the concept that Tai Chi is a movement that is both contradictory and unified.
3. Abstractly speaking, when the opponent strikes with a horizontal force, according to the mathematical formula: horizontal force × COS90° = 0, therefore, the vertical force can break the horizontal force, and it is possible to defeat a strong force with a weak force. Of course, frictional force is ignored and not taken into account here.
4. Comparative Medicine: "Tai Chi" shares the same principles as medical science. By practicing the martial art, the internal organs and limbs receive self-massage, thereby achieving the effect of activating the vital energy, unblocking the meridians, adjusting the nervous system, and enhancing the body's immunity. Practicing Tai Chi is more taxing but less harmful, leading to the benefits of strengthening the body and extending longevity.
5. All the classic treatises of Tai Chi say that Tai Chi was founded based on the theory of Tai Chi's yin and yang, combined with the theory of the meridians and bones in traditional Chinese medicine, and integrated with the techniques of Qigong and breathing exercises from Taoism. Therefore, the true core of Tai Chi is a martial art that practices both physical and spiritual cultivation, with the theory of Tai Chi's yin and yang as its theoretical basis, the theory of the meridians and bones in traditional Chinese medicine as its physiological basis, the techniques of Qigong and breathing exercises from Taoism as the method of cultivating Qi, and the martial arts form as its carrier. Furthermore, if we look at the classic theories in Tai Chi literature, the characteristics of Tai Chi's movements include: the continuity of each movement, not losing nor opposing, overcoming the hard with the soft, avoiding the strong and seeking the weak, and so on.
6. Taijiquan is a form of boxing, and in ancient times, boxing was a technique used for combat. There are internal and external schools of boxing; there are many types of boxing, but in the past, they all shared a common point that they had to have a combat significance. That which cannot be used for combat cannot be called boxing. Boxing is a carrier, which can carry different ideas and cultures to become a unique boxing style. In today's society, boxing is more about a spirit and a culture. Boxing is a technique, not just postures or routines. It must be distinguished from exercises or dances. It must have a very perfect movement curve that is in harmony with the human body's physiological foundation in order to reflect the charm of boxing techniques. Therefore, there is a saying about any boxing style that "a difference of a hair's breadth can lead to a mistake a thousand miles away."
7. Walk as a cat, exert force as if pulling silk.
8. Everyone knows that Tai Chi is an internal martial art, and internal martial arts must generate internal energy. However, almost all books on Tai Chi barely discuss the methods for generating internal energy. Therefore, many practitioners are lost and even after a lifetime of practice, they don't know what "Qi" (vital energy) is. Below, I will focus on elaborating on the principles and practice methods of Tai Chi's "refining essence into Qi, and refining Qi into spirit":
9. If the joints are not loose, the soft strength will not come.
10. Tai Chi Chuan integrates the essence of Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, medicine, and martial arts, organically blending them into a unified whole. It is the crystallization of the tireless research and practice of generations.
11. Boxing skills are based on composure.
12. The elbow should not leave the rib, and the hand should not leave the heart.
13. Psychology: "Tai Chi" can also achieve the cultivation of both body and mind. By practicing calmness and composure, not being moved by honor or disgrace, being composed and calm, adapting to changing situations, one's potential can be fully realized.
14. Tai Chi comes from nature, and one should not force one's will against it.
15. The hands are two doors, relying solely on the legs to kick others.
16. In Tai Chi push hands, the skill of "adhering, connecting, and following" is employed, without losing or opposing, which reflects the existence and application of frictional force.
17. It doesn't matter how many moves you know; what matters is mastering one move.
18. By examining the ancient Taoist concept of health preservation in China, "refining essence into qi, refining qi into spirit, and refining spirit into emptiness," this cultivation formula reveals that: cultivation can change the essence, qi, and spirit. In other words, the composition and function of essence, qi, and spirit are different from each other; essence is not equal to qi, and qi is not equal to spirit. It also tells us that through cultivation, essence can be transformed into qi, and then qi can be transformed into spirit. Observing from the text, this formula contains two key points:
19. If you don't flex your waist while practicing martial arts, your skills will never be high.
20. It must be clarified here that Tai Chi Chuan is not the "Number One Martial Art in the World." Every martial art has its unique characteristics, and it is absolutely not right to judge the value of martial arts based on the style. All martial arts have been passed down through countless trials and refinements.
21. The key to boxing is not in the number of punches, but in their skillfulness.
22. Still as mountains, dynamic as rivers.
23. 饭后散步,不进药铺 ;
23. Take a walk after meals; don't enter the pharmacy.
24. In Tai Chi Pushing Hands, the operation of "spiral entanglement" utilizes various directional forces, which change at any moment during the movement, and can achieve the effect of "easing energy to attack."
25. 上床萝卜下床姜,不劳医生开药方 ;
25. When you get into bed, eat radish; when you get out of bed, eat ginger; no need for a doctor to prescribe medicine.
26. In actual combat, the angle of force between the two parties is constantly changing, and it is impossible to precisely and completely express the entire process of operation using mathematical formulas. However, one can feel it with the body and mind, and react subconsciously.
27. Embrace the great by starting with the small, and seek to resolve difficulties through ease.
28. While "Taiji" is a philosophical concept, it is the crystallization of the civilization of the Chinese nation and the foundation of traditional Chinese culture. The Taiji diagram is a vivid and accurate summary of the Taiji image. From the Taiji diagram, it can be seen that Taiji takes the form of a circle, with black and white parts inside, commonly known as the "Yin and Yang fish," which embrace each other in a cycle; the white fish has a black eye, and the black fish has a white eye, representing "Yin contains Yang, and Yang contains Yin." It maintains the balance of Yin and Yang. Therefore, in Tai Chi, it is necessary to embody the principle of Taiji's Yin and Yang, to know how to maintain the changes and mutual transformations of Yin and Yang in various parts of the body during the movement of the actions, to know how to achieve "Yin contains Yang, and Yang contains Yin." Tai Chi integrates this Taiji thought into the boxing, becoming Tai Chi, which uses boxing as a carrier and actions to demonstrate Taiji culture and thought. That's why calling Tai Chi "Philosophical Boxing" is not without reason. Therefore, since it is called "Tai Chi," it must contain the two meanings of "Taiji" and "boxing," which means that Taiji's principle of Yin and Yang must be integrated into the boxing to be truly called Tai Chi. It is not enough to simply perform slow movements that look like boxing to be considered Tai Chi.
29. When it is said that "the refinement of essence transforms into Qi," what is "essence"? In life, when our physical condition is good, we call it "full of vitality," and when our physical condition is poor, we call it "exhausted," which indicates that "essence" is the energy that supplies the body's vitality. It can increase or decrease, and it is an element that is often consumed and in need of replenishment. The Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon says, "When a person is first born, essence is formed first." It also says, "Essence is the foundation of the body." Furthermore, it points out, "Life has form and is inseparable from Yin and Yang." From the interrelation of these three statements, we understand that essence is the fundamental element that constitutes the body; essence is the product of the combination of Yin and Yang; essence is the element that strengthens the body; and essence is the basic element for constructing the five internal organs, six bowels, limbs, bones, and muscles and skin. In traditional Chinese medicine, it is believed that essence exists in all the five internal organs, so "essence" is a type of Qi that is related to the health of the limbs and five internal organs and the acuteness of the six senses. The Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon says, "True Qi is the Qi received from heaven, which, along with grain Qi, fills the body." This means that humans can absorb "true Qi" from the heavens and earth, which can merge with the "grain Qi" in food to replenish the essence and Qi in our bodies. The Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon also says, "True Qi is the Jing Qi." This means that the essence and Qi flow through the blood vessels and meridians, containing kinetic energy, which has the driving force to propel. Therefore, this kind of Qi is classified as essence.
30. Here, I will simply elaborate on the functions of Tai Chi Chuan based on my own personal experience.
31. Tai Chi Chuan encompasses various disciplines such as philosophy, psychology, mechanics, and aesthetics.
32. In comparison with Buddhism: Practicing Tai Chi requires an extraordinary, transcendent mindset, akin to an elderly monk "entering a meditative state." With no thoughts and no sense of self, one sits in meditation and enters tranquility, adjusting the body, adjusting the mind, adjusting the breath, where tranquility gives rise to vitality. Within the body, natural, orderly internal energy flows along the conception and governing meridians, with the flow of energy ensuring good health.
33. To practice boxing, one must understand the principles; when the principles are understood, the boxing techniques become refined.
34. Strike a thousand times, and the divine principle will manifest itself.
35. Philosophy: Tai Chi Chuan is filled with rich philosophical ideas. For example, the phenomenon that movement divides yin and yang, the correspondence between inner and outer, the connection between left and right, the following of the upper and lower, and the reversal of extremes, etc. This is exactly the embodiment of the unity of opposites.
36. If you don't eat green food for three days, your eyes will see stars. To attain longevity, keep your intestines clean.
37. A thousand healths, ten thousand healths, maintaining a balanced mindset is the key.
38. Tai Chi's "using four ounces to move a thousand pounds" embodies the "tangential force" in the circular motion.
39. The punch can be slow, but it must not be stiff.
40. To practice boxing without training the internal energy, one will find nothing in the end.
41. The hand moves with the hand, and the step changes with the body. Whenever there is a turn, there must be a deep, sinking feeling.
42. It is difficult to form boxing with internal power but no external manifestation, and it is also difficult to master a skill with external form but no internal essence.
43. Every action must fully conform to the principles of classical boxing theory and the principles at the time Tai Chi was founded, meaning that every movement and posture should embody the theory of Tai Chi's yin and yang. The entire body, from head to toe, hands, feet, and back, should all be clearly differentiated between emptiness and fullness, with emptiness containing fullness and fullness containing emptiness, continuously transitioning between the two. Even the simplest action of opening both hands actually contains a combination of opening and closing. If one does not understand the theory of yin and yang, then it cannot be called Tai Chi.
44. Comparison of Martial Arts: The expertise of Tai Chi in the realm of martial arts is well-known. However, it has also faced much criticism. Some say, "Tai Chi is good for physical exercise, but in terms of combat, it may just be a name with a roar but no real substance."
45. The waist carries guests away, while the hip sits in the Marshal's Mansion.
46. Every movement should conform to the principle of the optimal stress points of the human skeletal system to ensure the smooth flow of meridians. Tai Chi master Chen Xing said in his work "Explanation of Chen's Tai Chi Chuan Diagrams" that an important point in practicing Tai Chi is that "the joints must be aligned." "The joints must be aligned" actually refers to matching the optimal stress state of the human skeletal system. Because in the Tai Chi form, matching the optimal stress state of the human skeletal system directly integrates the桩 (stake) practice into the form, which also aligns with the previously mentioned approach of practicing Tai Chi by walking the postures. At this point, the position of the hands, the position of the feet, and the direction of the body, even a difference of one centimeter is not allowed. This is what is called "a little difference can lead to a thousand miles of error." Only after having these specific positions, angles, and directions in the form can it mean that Tai Chi is fundamentally different from calisthenics and dance! The saying "with endless practice, Tai Chi reveals its magic" refers to practicing the Tai Chi form accurately; doing calisthenics for a lifetime will never transform into Tai Chi.
47. The character "练" means to refine or refine further, so we should study the process and methods of refining essence into qi, and qi into spirit.
48. Movement values brevity, intention values distance, and strength values length.
49. Three years of study and you can go anywhere in the world; another three years of study and it's hard to take a single step.
50. Fists are the source of martial arts, and skill is the foundation of all arts.
51. Without a fist, without intention, the true intention lies in the absence of intention.
52. From being accustomed and gradually understanding the strength, one progresses to the level of achieving spiritual enlightenment.
53. To hit is like to embrace, the hand must reach and the step must follow, the step must reach and the body must embrace.
54. The opening and closing of the hard and soft, that is the essence of boxing classics.
55. Best Answer This question...
56. The skill of capturing and releasing in Tai Chi Pushing Hands embodies the principle of leverage.
57. The fist respects the eye, and the eye is the sprout of the heart.
58. According to the above, several principles must be understood when practicing or teaching Tai Chi Chuan:
59. "Failing to bring down, the opponent is immediately sent away" is one of the characteristics of Tai Chi Chuan sparring. When the opponent exerts force to strike, I stick to their incoming force and let go with the momentum. At this moment, my force is in the same direction and speed as the opponent's. When the opponent feels they are about to lose their balance and want to adjust to a central position, due to the effect of inertia, they cannot suddenly stop or change direction immediately. At this point, I take advantage of their force to exert my own, and there is no doubt that the opponent will be sent away by me.
60. Comparing Taoism: Taoists talk about refining the Qi of the丹田, which can be achieved through practicing "standing post" to nourish the primal Qi, making the internal Qi abundant, and guiding the Qi back to the 丹田. Over time, the internal cultivation deepens.
61. Use it or lose it.
