17. 德为本,威济之。德而不威,其国外削;威而不德,其民内溃。
17. Virtue is the foundation, and might is its support. Without might but with virtue, the country's borders will be eroded; without virtue but with might, the people within will be undermined.
18. 旧有三军,今又添二军,共是五军,亚于天子之制。

19. 仁者虽怨不忘亲,虽怒不弃礼。

24. Birds that fly high die from fine food; fish that dwell in deep springs perish from alluring bait.
25. 君臣以义合。君待臣如手足,则臣待君如腹心;君待臣如犬马,则臣待君如路人。
25. The ruler and the subject are united by righteousness. If the ruler treats the subject as a hand or a foot, then the subject treats the ruler as his heart and soul; if the ruler treats the subject as a dog or a horse, then the subject treats the ruler as a stranger.
26. 夫忠臣不进阿顺之言,明主不蹈狂悖之行。主有悖行而臣不言,是臣负其君也;臣有忠言而君不听,是君负其臣也。
26. A loyal minister does not promote insincere praise, and a wise ruler does not engage in foolish and rebellious behavior. If a ruler has rebellious behavior and the minister does not speak up, it is the minister who betrays his ruler; if a minister has loyal advice and the ruler does not listen, it is the ruler who betrays his minister.
27. 富贵多士,贫贱寡交,事之常也。
27. It is a common phenomenon that the wealthy have many friends, while the poor have few, and this is as it should be.
28. 为将者,受命之日,即忘其家;临君约束,则忘其亲;秉枹鼓,犯矢石,则忘其身。
28. A leader, upon receiving his commission, should forget his family; when facing the ruler's commandments, he should forget his parents; when wielding the drumstick and facing arrows and stones, he should forget himself.
29. 贱不能临贵,贫不能役富,疏不能制亲。
29. The lowly cannot approach the noble, the poor cannot enslave the rich, and the distant cannot control the close.
30. 赏罚不明,百事不成;赏罚若明,四方可行。
30. Lack of clarity in rewards and punishment leads to the failure of all endeavors; when rewards and punishment are clear, all things can be accomplished in the four directions.
31. 惟有德义者,方能恤民。能恤民者,方能用兵。
31. Only those with virtue and righteousness can show compassion to the people. And only those who can show compassion to the people are qualified to use military force.
32. 仁者不乘危以邀利,智者不侥幸以成功。
32. The benevolent do not take advantage of peril to seek profit, and the wise do not rely on chance for success.
33. 忧在外者攻其弱,忧在内者攻其强。
33. Those who worry about external matters attack their weaknesses, while those who worry about internal matters attack their strengths.
34. 虎卑其势,将有击也;狸缩其身,将有取也。

35. 欲人勿恶,必先自美;欲人勿疑,必先自信。

36. 桃树有华,灿灿其霞,当户不折,飘而为直,吁嗟复吁!桃树有英,烨烨其灵,今兹不折,证无来者?叮咛兮复叮咛!
