Self-management, do not help others with your heart. In the bustling world, we are like solitary boats, and only by mastering ourselves can we reach the shore. Today, let us set sail and embark on a journey of self-exploration.
1. >> Zeng Guofan read his friend's letter, repeatedly recalled the past, and increasingly clearly saw his own fatal weakness: too proud, too eager, always stubborn, always inflexible.
2. >> The extent to which a person's abilities are utilized is closely related to their own expectations of themselves. In other words, the degree of exertion of one's spiritual power directly determines the extent of realization of one's physical potential.
3. Chapter 6: Why is the Hunan Army so formidable?
4. >> Do not give up in times of difficulty, as enduring through this period will lead to progress. With each further effort, you will encounter more difficulties, and with each endurance, you will strive harder. There will come a day of prosperity and advancement. This is not limited to calligraphy practice; every endeavor has its most challenging times. Those who can break through are the true heroes.
5. Chapter 12: "A Little Bit of Giving Up the Titles of Power and Rank"
6. He summarizes his own shortcomings; he is restless, has an irregular lifestyle; he is proud and lacks修养; he pretends to understand when he doesn't, and is lascivious (likes to look at beautiful women).
7. Success: Quitting smoking. Once he made up his mind, he never backed down. He realized that to break old habits, one must have a resolute and forceful spirit. Without a bit of "cutting through the crowd" resoluteness, a person cannot walk firmly or travel far. The success of quitting smoking bolstered his confidence in "learning to become a sage."
8. Practice: Learning traditional culture, self-improvement, and managing the family are my next goals.
9. Jiujiang is located at the confluence of the Yangtze River and Poyang Lake, an important city in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, with a strategically crucial location. After several consecutive major victories, General Zeng became overly proud and believed that victory was within reach. However, although the Xiang Army had achieved victory after victory, their troops had actually become weary due to their headlong advance. The Taiping Army, taking advantage of the Xiang Army's urgent desire for battle, used small boats to harass them. They managed to tightly block more than 120 ships in the lake, trapping over a hundred "light and swift boats" and two thousand "strong and vigorous soldiers" in Poyang Lake, thus shifting the initiative of the war into the hands of the Taiping Army. In the surprise attack, Zeng Guofan's personal boat was also captured. Reflecting on the fact that his water army, which he had spent years meticulously nurturing, had met such a fate, he was humiliated and ashamed, and in a critical moment when the Taiping Army was approaching, he drowned himself, only to be saved by others.
10. >> On this outing, Zeng Guofan's friends were surprised to find that he had changed so much that they almost didn't recognize him.
11. >> This is because he "dares not be tired of the hardships" and carefully ponders. He can endure more hardships, be more solid, and more ruthlessly push himself than others. Zeng Guofan is not necessarily smarter than others, but his work is extremely skillful. The skillfulness of Zeng Guofan is built on simplicity, on the exhaustive thinking and meticulous efforts. "Stupidity" to the extreme becomes "intelligence," and "clumsiness" to the limit becomes "cleverness." Isn't a powerful computer also built on the most simple binary system based on only two digits, "1" and "0"?
12. Zeng Guofan's grandfather, Zeng Yuping, was originally a common farmer. In his youth, he had not studied, was idle, and did not pursue a serious career. He bought a good horse and spent the whole day hanging out with a group of idle young men in the city. While he was carousing and singing, an old man said to his grandson, "Don't follow in his footsteps. He has no money at home but runs around the city pretending to be a big shot. This family will surely be ruined by him!" Upon hearing this, he immediately sold the horse and walked home. From then on, he went to bed early and got up early, worked in the fields, and vowed to revitalize the family and establish a career. He told Zeng Guofan that the vegetables he grew with his own hands tasted the best, and the money he earned through hard work was spent with peace of mind.
13. The last rule is not to go out at night. Don't go out to chat with friends when it gets dark.
14. Writing. Spend half an hour writing after meals. Treat all writing and correspondence as part of your own study. Do not leave anything for tomorrow; the more you accumulate, the harder it will be to clear up.
15. >> Throughout the countless billions of years, there is no end in sight. Within this span, a human life spans only a few decades, which is just a fleeting moment. ... There are myriad changes and countless paths to a good name, but what a person with talent can achieve is no more than a single grain in an immense granary.
16. Chapter 3: The惊人的Progression Path
17. >> Throughout history and across countries, military strategists with great talent and vision have all been able to consistently grasp issues from a strategic perspective, to see the main points through temporary chaos, to understand the essence amidst intertwined benefits and losses, and to firmly grasp the relationship between the long-term and the immediate, the overall and the local.
18. >> The first key to Zeng Guofan's lifelong success was his aspiration for greatness. This aspiration propelled him throughout his life to not be deterred by small temptations or goals. It motivated him not to compromise or retreat in the face of any great difficulties.
19. >> Bloody battle
20. "If we walk a mile in another's shoes, we will understand why they behave as they do." --- Louise Hay
Chapter 13: The Purity and Pollution of the Grand Director of the Two Rivers
22. >> One should strive for self-improvement and not easily become angry. Without the actual efforts of self-improvement, but merely having the words of contention, it is not only futile but also harmful.
23. >> Zeng Guofan spent his entire life fighting without seeking trivial gains or seeking fancy strategies, being steady and solid in his approach. He never fought without preparation or without confidence. Each time he went to war, he invested immense effort in studying the situation of both sides, the deployment of the battle, logistics supply, and how to rescue in case of unfavorable conditions, until every detail was accounted for and thoroughly calculated, only then would he make the decision to engage in battle.
24. The most foolish behavior of adults,
25. >> Foolish and stubborn
26. >> When Zhao Liewen was bidding farewell to Zeng Guofan, he noticed that Zeng was in a very poor mental state, described as "his spirit was waning," like leaves beaten by autumn frost. Consequently, he felt "deeply concerned," worried about Zeng's health. In fact, it was because of the constant guilt over dealing with the Tianjin Incident that Zeng Guofan suffered a great mental blow. Soon after he returned to his post as the governor of the two Jiangs provinces, he died in a melancholic state.
27. In real life, how many people can put their own safety and well-being aside and prioritize family, company, and social responsibility? This quality of considering the overall situation is invaluable even today!
28. Referring to the definition of strategy by management master Peter Drucker, strategy is not about thinking what we will do in the future, but rather what we need to do now to have a future.
29. The first point is Zeng Guofan's strict self-management. Starting from the age of 30, he has consistently woken up early to read books every day and kept a diary for reflection. This laid a solid foundation for his future path of self-improvement. Looking back, I actually have the good habit of waking up early, but I haven't specifically summarized it. Starting from May, I demanded myself to wake up at 6 o'clock every day, without fail for 30 days, regardless of the weather. Later, my body clock even adjusted to waking up at 5 o'clock, or even earlier. I also forced myself to ensure 6 hours of sleep every night, so that I could listen to books or immediately start reading upon waking up. This is a very good time to calm down and read, and it sets off a beautiful day. Waking up at 5 o'clock, I can allocate 3 hours for studying before going to work every day. Over time, the compound interest of time is astonishing. Moreover, every night I reflect and review the day's words and actions, checking for any inappropriate behavior. If there is any, I actively explain and apologize to avoid unnecessary misunderstandings.
30. In fact, the main purpose of keeping a diary is self-reflection. Firstly, treat the diary as a major event in your life. Secondly, the role of the diary is to "investigate the smallest things," to study details. By changing yourself through every detail, if one detail falls apart, the entire self-management will collapse. Therefore, when writing a diary, it is necessary to reflect on the entire day's activities, not only to reflect on your own actions but also to reflect on every thought that crosses your mind (in a single day, a single misstep, a missed opportunity, a word spoken or not spoken are all written down), so every evening he carefully reviews what he did that day, what he said, and records the mistakes, engaging in profound self-reflection.
31. What impressed me deeply is that Zeng Guofan did not hold any past grudges and treated people with tolerance. In the face of Shen Baoding and Zuo Zongtang's difficulties, his betrayal and throwing people under the bus, he remained indifferent, and when they needed help, he put aside his grievances and gave them a helping hand. This is the realm of having a broad mind and a grand vision.
32. While observing filial piety, he could not bear to neglect the country's peril, so he came out to organize militia training, only to suffer the humiliation of Changsha, which was heart-wrenching to read. Not to mention his own situation, the key point is that if the country were to lose to the Taiping Army, the country's culture would also be rewritten, which was the last thing Zeng Guofan wanted to see. Moreover, he was someone who either did not fight or fought to win. As a man of letters, he made the most dangerous yet most patriotic choice: to establish something new in a barren land. The process of organizing his Xiang Army was incredibly arduous, without funds, without connections, and without any relevant institutional guarantees. However, the humiliation of Changsha made him firmly believe that it was necessary to succeed. In this regard, to accomplish something, one needs not only unwavering faith but also an extraordinary level of perseverance. It is also essential to think diligently and wisely. I feel that if I were to summon this courage, I don't know how many of my own problems that exist only on the level of thought and have not yet entered action could be resolved. In daily life, my focus is often on trivial matters, often leading to internal耗损. In the future, I need to learn to look at things from a broader perspective. Once you have a macro perspective, there are solutions to current issues.
33. The moon does not forget its abilities. Each month, compose several poems and essays to test the abundance of accumulated knowledge and the richness of one's spirit. One should not indulge in it excessively, as this is most likely to lead to a loss of focus and purpose.
34. >> Secondly, he no longer spoke as openly to the emperor, but instead learned to practice Tai Chi.
35. Chapter 2 Why "Learn to Be a Saint"
36. In the midst of extreme suffering, he began to read the works of Laozi and Zhuangzi. The words of the sages from thousands of years ago unexpectedly gave him enlightenment, as if he had been transported to another realm. Zeng Guofan gradually calmed down and reflected on his own demeanor and conduct, realizing that he spoke too impulsively and dealt with matters too directly, with his sharpness and ambition fully exposed. Therefore, Mr. Zeng actively wrote to his friends, asking them to offer more advice and help him summarize his experiences and lessons. Zeng Guofan realized that "great gentleness is not gentle, and great firmness is not firm." Sometimes, it is necessary to blend with the mundane and be smooth and supple, only then can one successfully navigate through each difficult bottleneck. Only by embracing the vastness of the sea and absorbing all things can one mobilize the power of all sides and reach the shore of victory.
37. Reflection after reading: Zeng Guofan actually took seven years to pass the imperial examination and become a scholar. This kind of perseverance truly impresses me to the utmost. I can't help but imagine how many cold glances, sarcastic remarks, and indifferent looks he and his father and family had to endure at that time, which makes me feel heartbroken. I myself come from a rural background, and I deeply feel that not everyone in my hometown is kind-hearted. There are many people who gossip, spread idle talk, picking on the bad when you're good, and saying even more malicious things when you're bad. So, being able to shield the noise from the outside world and instead turning it into some kind of motivation is a rare and valuable asset. Zeng Guofan had great ambitions; others might have stopped after passing the imperial examination. But his aspirations were far beyond that, so he later smoothly entered the Hanlin Academy, which was the highest academic institution of the time. This shows that if we have long-term ambitions, the trivial matters in front of us are not a problem. If we have mountains and seas in our eyes, then...
38. Volume 1: The Era of the Capital Official
39. b) The beginning of a transformation is to start writing a diary, which is the foundation for entering the path of sainthood. Although there have been times when writing a diary was not sustained, with problems like just recording daily events, and failing to stick to planned routines, under the guidance of Tang Jian, Zeng Guofan learned how to write a diary. The most important purpose of keeping a diary is to reflect on oneself, and no matter what the circumstances, one must not break the habit of writing a diary every day. In addition, Zeng Guofan also shared his diary with friends to read, because only through being stimulated and pressed by others can one achieve success. Through the supervision of others, Zeng Guofan continuously improved himself, and maintained this good habit throughout his life.
40. Chapter 8: Jiangxi's Dilemma and the "Great Repentance and Enlightenment"
41. Read history. In the Bing Shen year, I purchased the "Twenty-three Histories." The elder said, "If you borrow money to buy books, I will not hesitate to go to great lengths for you. If you can annotate the entire set once, then you will not have disappointed me." From then on, I annotated ten leaves every day, but I interrupted this practice due to being disrespectful to my parents.
42. The difficult imperial examination was an excellent self-education for Zeng Guofan, reinforcing his characteristic of "ever more determined after setbacks." It also shaped Zeng Guofan's unique philosophy of life — the value of simplicity (the most simple in the world can overcome the most cunning). Simplicity may seem slow at first, but it actually becomes faster over time, just like building a house; because the foundation is solid, the house can be built higher than others. Throughout his life, he never took shortcuts or detours in his work, always doing things in the most simple and solid manner. He pursued steady accumulation, like water dripping to wear away stone, aiming for thoroughness and leaving a footprint with every step. In his character, he valued "sincere simplicity," treating deception with sincerity and not engaging in cunning. In leading soldiers in battle, he relied solely on perseverance and steadfastness, fighting to the end. A gentleman does not take shortcuts or seek empty fame. He accumulates bit by bit, advancing through hardship. Although a gentleman may achieve success later than others, once he does, it is a great success.
43. "A skilled military strategist should first be an adept strategist. By strategy, we mean organizing and arranging various complex elements according to their importance, urgency, and sequence, based on macroscopic and long-term considerations, and then formulating the most effective action plan."
44. Reading one passage of Zeng Guofan is not enough; there is so much more to share. If you are fortunate enough to read this book review, I strongly recommend that you read Zeng Guofan. Because Zeng Guofan, with his entire life, has proven the heights that human willpower can achieve, while also demonstrating the limitations of a person's willpower. His hopelessly hard work has set up a monument on the path of human spirit that is bound to inspire awe and respect. As a Hunanese, I am proud and自豪 of having such a historical figure, and I also encourage myself to learn from Zeng Guofan throughout my life, to promote the culture of Hunan and the Chinese spirit, and to become a valuable wave for society!
45. Besides his studies, he has a wide range of friends and enjoys a good reputation among the literati. One's acquisition of knowledge and information, as well as seeking help outside, largely depends on friends. The number and quality of friends determine how broad a person's horizons are. In the secluded Hunan, Zeng Guofan's biggest regret was not being able to make friends of quality. 'Lack of friends in the countryside is the first regret.' After moving to Beijing, he quickly made a large number of friends, as evidenced by his diary, which shows that he hardly had a day without socializing. The reason he was able to make so many friends lies in his emulation of his grandfather, his eagerness to do good deeds and his love for helping others. However, he also understands the boundaries between friends, such as when dealing with superiors, he pays attention to maintaining a proper distance and never loses his composure, keeping everything within a normal range, and not being overly frequent in his visits.
46. >> Perhaps Zeng Guofan's heart may have a fleeting trace of jealousy at first, but this trace of jealousy quickly fades away, leaving behind more happiness.
47. Respect. Neat and solemn, always cautious. When there is nothing to do, the mind is focused within. When dealing with matters, it is dedicated and not distracted. Clarity resides within, like the rising sun.
48. >> In Zeng Guofan's view, "failure" is a precious treasure in a person's lifetime. One must thoroughly understand each failure to not waste this cost in vain.
