4. It is estimated that Ji Xiaolan must have been experiencing a mixture of emotions in his heart at the time, feeling uncomfortable, but also indirectly pointing out that the autocratic thinking of the Qing emperors was too severe, and the entire country was decided by the personal consciousness of the emperor. 8. With my life, and by the vow of my deceased mother, I swear to you... (What a heavy vow this is) Ziqi: Your Majesty, being so exalted, have you not become accustomed to the most ordinary filial piety in the world? The Ministry of Works is to undertake major construction projects, and the Minister of Works, Jin Shangshu, has requested for funding from He Sen. He Sen, taking this as a topic, posed a couplet to Ji Xiaolan: The Water Ministry is on fire, and Minister Jin is undertaking major construction. This couplet contains the five elements of wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. Ji Xiaolan thought for a moment and replied: The northerners are southern in appearance, what does the Zhongtang have? This immediately angered He Sen to the point of near death.

10. When he was young, he particularly loved to read the stories of Liu Yong, Ji Xiaolan, Li Daoyuan, and Ji Gong.

11. To put it in today's language, it would be: Ji Xiaolan, you don't have a clue! I see you have some literary talent, so I let you lead the compilation of the "Four Books and Five Classics"; in reality, it's just like keeping you as an actor to amuse me! What资格 do you have to discuss national affairs in front of me?

12. Ji Xiaolan was a civil official during the Qianlong period and served as the chief editor of the "Four Books and Five Classics." As everyone knows, it is believed that Ji Xiaolan was highly favored by Emperor Qianlong. However, in reality, this was not the case. Historically, he was far less favored than He Shen, and even had little weight in the eyes of Emperor Qianlong.

13. Er Kong: "All my fault, all my fault. I shouldn't have watched the snow, stars, and moon with her, talking about poetry, songs, and odes, and philosophy of life... I promise you that from now on, I will only watch the snow, stars, and moon with you, and discuss poetry, songs, odes, and philosophy of life..." Your Majesty, do you still remember Xia Yuhe by the Daming Lake from back then? Meng Dan ran away with Han Xiang, and her father led his troops to chase after them. They blocked the two in the desert, where the soldiers beat Meng Dan while dragging Han Xiang away. Han Xiang was dragged on the ground, but she fought back with all her might, tears in her eyes, shouting, "Meng Dan! You are the wind, and I am the sand!" Then she recited a poem: "The wind is howling, the sand is fluttering; the wind is blowing, the sand is flying. The wind flies over the Tianshan Mountains, and the sand chases after it over the Tianshan Mountains!" From now on, there is only your place on my horseback, no room for anyone else, I发誓!

First met in the midst of flower memories, her red sleeve half-hiding, the peach skirt trailing, she stealthily twists her slender jade fingers, intertwining with golden threads of two phoenixes; deep in the courtyard with green paulownia trees, who would have thought that their deep affection would ever intertwine so intimately?

17. Once, Ji Xiaolan interceded for his friend Yin Zhuangtu, who was the Minister of Rites, due to his straightforward criticism of the silver penalty system, which he believed was detrimental to the court, leading to punishment from Emperor Qianlong. It should be noted that the system of silver penalties was initiated by Emperor Qianlong himself as a method to replenish the national treasury, and it was not permitted for others to oppose it.

18. I dare not take life; I dare not indulge in lust for the life I give. As for the rest, I am indifferent!

19. Qianlong actually knew the situation abroad at that time, but he always had a resistance in his heart, not wanting to change. Because once you change or carry out political reforms, your wealth will be shaken. Although the Qing Dynasty also had an emperor who promoted reforms, it was Emperor Guangxu, but it was of no use and he was quickly overthrown by Empress Dowager Cixi. Perhaps Qianlong did indeed achieve something during his early years, otherwise there would not have been a "Kang-Qian Flourishing Era" in history. However, Qianlong's later years were a turning point for the entire Qing Dynasty, marking the beginning of its rapid decline.

20. You're a rascal! You're nothing but a thorough-going scoundrel of a literati!

21. Emperor Qianlong is a controversial emperor. Some say he was a wise ruler, while others call him a ruler of ignorance. Regardless, he was at least an extremely autocratic emperor. What does it mean to be extremely capricious, self-respecting, and unwilling to listen to the opinions of his ministers?

22. Emperor Qianlong is well-known to the masses, largely due to their knowledge from television. Among the numerous emperors in ancient Chinese history, Emperor Qianlong is the one who has been photographed the most. He is also the one who actually held power for the longest period of time (of course, including the years when he was the Emperor Emeritus).

23. Unexpectedly, Ji Xiaolan came to beg for mercy, and Emperor Qianlong was extremely angry: "I appointed you to lead the Four Treasuries because of your literary talents, but it's actually just to keep you as a pet, why do you talk nonsense about national affairs!" What does this sentence mean?

24. As is widely known, the Qianlong period was a key period in the Qing Dynasty. At that time, the Industrial Revolution was rising overseas, accelerating the changes in the world order. Yet, Emperor Qianlong continued to isolate the country, content with his own state.

35. It also involved the famous historical figures Ji Xiaolan, Lu Jianzeng, and Liu Tongsun.

36. Through the ages, ancient wisdom, and the hall of subtle observations. The next line for the phrase "Iron-jawed and copper-teeth, a sharp-tongued Ji Xiaolan" is "Through the ages, ancient wisdom, and the hall of subtle observations." These two parallel sentences describe the eloquent and articulate Ji Xiaolan, as well as the rich content of his work, "Notes from the Hall of Subtle Observations." The couplets are well-matched in structure, and the composition is ingeniously crafted. "Notes from the Hall of Subtle Observations" (originally titled "Notes from the Hall of Subtle Observations"), is a collection of classical Chinese short tales of the supernatural, written in the form of notes by Ji Yun, a scholar-official of the Qing Dynasty's Hanlin Academy, between the 54th year of Qianlong (1789) and the 3rd year of Jiaqing (1798).

37. In the feudal society, the emperors have always been autocratic. That's true. To maintain long-term stability, one must broaden one's horizons and listen to various opinions. As the saying goes, "Advice that is beneficial is not always pleasant to the ear," so there was not a truly virtuous minister throughout the Qing Dynasty. There were only capable ministers. Whatever the emperor said, the ministers were only required to execute it, rather than to offer opinions, let alone to express any opposition.

May the 'sacred' benefits always belong to you!

43. Once, the Bureau of Works in the capital city caught fire, and Emperor Qianlong ordered the Grand Minister of Works, Jin Jian, to recruit civilian laborers to rebuild it. Among the officials at court, there was one who was bored and idle, so he came up with a couplet on his own: "The Water Bureau caught fire, Minister Jin starts a grand construction." This sentence contained the five elements of "water, fire, metal, earth, and wood," so no one could come up with a matching couplet for a long time. At that time, there was a grand secretary who was tall and muscular, boasting that he had a southern appearance but lived in the north. He was also quite fond of riddles and couplets. However, after much thought, he could not come up with a matching couplet. So he asked Ji Xiaolan for help, wanting him to think of a solution. Ji Xiaolan smiled and said, "It's not difficult to come up with a match for this sentence, but I'm afraid it might offend you, Mr. Minister." The grand secretary said eagerly, "Never mind, just as long as it matches!" Ji Xiaolan then replied: "People with a southern appearance, what is the Grand Secretariat?" Ji Xiaolan used the five directions of "south, north, east, west, and center" to counterbalance the five elements of "water, fire, metal, earth, and wood," which was originally a good match, but put together, it became an offensive remark. For example, there is a well-known joke that we all know: One day, when the court was dismissed, a eunuch wanted to hear Ji Xiaolan tell a joke. Ji Xiaolan pretended to think deeply for a while and said, "Once there was a eunuch..." and then stopped. The eunuch waited for a long time and asked, "What comes next?" Ji Xiaolan replied, "There's nothing below." Those who heard it were overwhelmed with laughter. Once, Ji Xiaolan was in the Southern Study, and an old eunuch who had long heard of Ji Xiaolan's fame came to see him. He saw Ji Xiaolan wearing a fur coat and holding a folding fan as per the habits of contemporary scholars. The eunuch proposed a riddle: "Young scholar, wearing winter clothes, holding a summer fan, have you ever read the Spring and Autumn Annals?" This couplet cleverly weaves in the four seasons of spring, summer, autumn, and winter, and subtly criticizes Ji Xiaolan's attire, making it very difficult to respond. Unexpectedly, Ji Xiaolan answered it easily: "Old supervisor, born in the south, coming to the north, is that thing still around?" This incident quickly became a source of laughter. Here, Ji Xiaolan openly used the eunuch's physical defect as a joke, which was somewhat lacking in decorum. Another story is about when Ji Xiaolan served as the Minister of Rites, one day, the Minister of Rites and the Censor came together to visit. As they chatted, a dog named "Si'er" ran out. Seeing the dog, the Minister of Rites suddenly had an idea to mock Ji Xiaolan and said, "Hey, look, is that a wolf or a dog (the Minister of Rites is a dog)?" Ji Xiaolan knew that the Minister of Rites was teasing him, so he calmly said, "There are two ways to distinguish whether it's a wolf or a dog. One is to look at its tail: tails hanging down are wolves, and those standing up are dogs (the Minister of Rites is a dog)." The Censor laughed and said, "Haha, I thought that was a wolf or a dog, turns out it's a dog with its tail standing up, Haha, Haha." Ji Xiaolan calmly continued, "Another way to distinguish is to see what it eats. Wolves only eat meat, while dogs will eat meat if they see it and eat shit if they see it (the Censor eats shit)." This time, even the Censor was left speechless.

44. In the world of humans, there are causes and effects, and with you, there is me... For this life and this world, wherever you are, I will be there...

45. In life, one should remember to be cautious, as the more one fears, the safer one will be.
