1. It was only when I reread "The Confessions" for the second time that I felt that Rousseau, who dared to openly disclose his privacy and expose his scars, was truly a person in the human sense, worthy of respect and admiration. Shouldn't contemporary Chinese biographical literature learn a bit from Rousseau's spirit?

2. After reading this book, moved as I was, I thought that without combining our own unspoken secrets to understand Rousseau's courage to admit, it would never be understandable. Some have criticized Rousseau as an extremely neurotic person, a misogynist, and an impractical, confused thinker. But it is this neurotic person who has created wealth and sparked thoughts that have continuously influenced us. It reminded me of many people and events from the past that I had forgotten, as the sentence in this article goes: Perhaps at that time, we would not have felt pain for our own despicable actions, we would convince our conscience, but as time goes by, they will eventually torment our innermost feelings. Maybe we dare not admit our own sins, but we can change ourselves, let there be a piece of light in our hearts, treat everyone around us with kindness and love, give more warmth to others with our hearts, and I believe that this world will be filled with sunshine.

3. The greatest secret of education is to balance physical exercise with mental exercise.

4. That trace of memory is like the belly of the soul, happiness or sorrow like sweet or bitter food; when memory retains something, it is as if the food enters the belly, is stored there, and the taste of the food is no longer felt. — Rousseau, "The Confessions"

5. We advocate for freedom, "even if I don't agree with you, I will defend your right to speak," but often end up using foul language when disagreeing with netizens.

6. In the book, Rousseau imagines himself as an ideal teacher, while Émile is an ideal student. Rousseau uses his interactions with Émile to expound on the concept of age-appropriate education.

7. With such great works, we would naturally assume that in real life, Rousseau's educational achievements with his children must have been abundant and fruitful.

8. In the solitude and boredom, one can truly feel the benefits of living with people who are concerned about thoughts.

9. Thank God, I have finally dared to express the unspeakable丑事 in plain language.

10. The union of marriage requires both husband and wife to be faithful; faithfulness is the most sacred of all rights.

11. Vanity and self-protection may be a trait that humans are born with. At least, as one of the basic features of biology, self-protection is definitely rooted in the cells of each and every one of us. However, here, the boundary between vanity and self-protection seems to be blurred. On the surface, these two concepts appear unrelated, but they are actually interconnected. By self-protection, I am not referring to physical protection, but rather a form of spiritual self-protection. When a person is attacked, which of course includes spiritual attacks, the brain usually sends out a signal to respond. In the Confessions that I have read by Rousseau, he even used his writings to counterattack those who attacked him.

12. Memory is not a terrible thing, but only a small fraction of the brave dare to make it public.

13. In the latter half of his life, Rousseau achieved fame and success, but behind the glitz was more exploitation and deception, eventually leading him down the path to destruction.

14. The person who lives the most meaningful life is not necessarily the one who lives the longest, but the one who feels life the most deeply.

15. Where teachers lack love, neither character nor wisdom can develop fully or freely.

16. For law enforcers, they must exercise the powers entrusted to them by the principal according to the principal's will, and in any case, they must place the public interest above personal interests.

17. To instill truth into his mind is solely to ensure that he does not fill his heart with errors.

18. Li Dan broke through to the essence of the matter with humor, systematically refuting Huang Zhizhong's arguments, with the most important one being a direct rebuttal to the view of the distant cry.

19. Virtue is a **state**, and we live within it, we must often struggle with ourselves.

20. Heavy rain may delay our arrival time, but it cannot stop us from moving forward.

21. A person with good will finds it easy to express his politeness towards others.

22. It is only in these moments of solitude and contemplation that I am truly myself, the me that aligns with my true nature, free from worry and restraint.

23. Self-esteem comes from reason and is strengthened by thought, as reason makes one focus on oneself, away from everything that causes him pain or discomfort.

24. Reading Rousseau, I cannot sleep; reading him, my soul is deeply moved. I have entered Rousseau's inner world, and thus, my world has lost its peace for a long time. Because in Rousseau's world, I found too much, too much that resonated with my own soul! What a wonderful thing that is. Rousseau instructed that this book should only be published long after his death. Yet, I believe that the great genius Rousseau, even with the strongest psychic intuition, could never have foreseen the wealth and value his "Confessions" would leave behind for humanity. Two hundred and more years have passed, Rousseau, you and I live in different eras, in different worlds. If I could, I would like to say to you: I have been secretly crying for your tragic fate, I love your great and pure soul so much. Can we embrace across the wheel of time? Even if you only have a skeleton or a heap of earth, I would still want to hold you in my arms, like a mother embracing her beloved son, like a lover embracing their intimate partner.

25. All our wisdom is inescapably stained by the bias of slavery. All our habits enslave us, bind us, and suppress us. Civilized people are bound by the shackles of slavery from birth to death.

26. When a person dedicates themselves wholeheartedly to doing good, they are bound to achieve success in the end.

27. All my talents come from my love for the subjects I have to handle. Only love for the great, the true, and the beautiful can ignite my genius.

28. "The Confessions" is the product of Jean-Jacques Rousseau's turbulent and wandering old age, an authentic and true autobiography, which is a completely unprecedented and perhaps never-to-be-repeated portrait of a person depicting their true self and all the facts of their life. Halfway through, I was already torn between whether to continue reading. No one can be perfect all the time, but it takes immense courage to admit one's own shortcomings. Rousseau's character was passionate, upright, and kind, a very typical "artsy young man," all of which stemmed from his father's influence and love during his childhood, as well as the carefree life in the countryside. However, he was also sensitive, pessimistic, and sarcastic, a "愤青," which all came from his experiences after returning to the city following his father's death. Starting as an apprentice at the age of twelve, the tyrannical and autocratic nature of his master, and the rudeness, all subtly influenced him to develop bad habits such as lying, greed, and deceit. But just like Mencius' theory of "the inherent goodness of human nature," Rousseau's essence was still noble, upright, and bold. In his eyes, the world of the common people was far more noble and superior than that of the upper class. While denouncing the people of the upper class, he also openly expressed his admiration for the lower class. There are many articles like this, but what I found most striking about "The Confessions" was the courage to face oneself and reflect on oneself. If one is dirty, one is dirty; if one is noble, one is noble. In this era of immense pressure, everyone has some unknown shame, but how many people are willing to reflect, think deeply, and face up to it? No one, because it is shameful to face it. It is not necessary to talk about the big picture; even simple issues like giving up a seat on a bus for an elderly person, how many people pretend to be asleep with their eyes closed? I don't believe they don't feel ashamed deep down, otherwise they wouldn't close their eyes. They know they are ashamed, but they are also selfish, cowardly, and even though they know they are wrong, they are not willing to admit it. If these people were to deeply reflect on themselves, such incidents would not happen again. However, they continue to happen over and over again, to the point of numbness. People are bound to make mistakes, but the key is to reflect, ensure that one won't make the same mistakes again, and don't let some immoral behaviors tarnish one's life. Rousseau was great, and behind his baseness was reflected the utmost glory and pride. It is also praiseworthy to be ashamed to face one's own dishonor, and one will still be respected after reflection.

29. Surrendering to power is merely a necessary behavior, not a choice of will, at most it is a clever behavior!

30. Virtue is like a battlefield; in order to live a good life, we must often struggle with ourselves.

31. The first time I heard Professor Luo Xiang say this, I didn't feel anything, or rather, I didn't understand what he was saying.

32. It is very easy to shout slogans, and it makes us feel very noble, very grand, and very upright.

33. On this day, when I read this sentence by Rousseau, I was still very moved. He said: "At the time, I was what kind of person, I wrote what kind of person: if I was mean and cunning at the time, I wrote about my mean and cunning; if I was kind, honest, and morally noble at the time, I wrote about my kindness, honesty, and moral nobility. Oh, almighty God! My innermost self is completely exposed, just as you see it yourself, please call those countless beings to come to me! Let them listen to my repentance, let them sigh over my various declensions, and let them be ashamed of my various misdeeds. Then, let each one of them, before your throne, disclose their innermost self with the same sincerity, and see who dares to say to you: 'I am better than this person!'". This passage is very much like the words of Jesus to the Pharisees who maliciously accused a prostitute: "Among you, if any of you have not sinned, let him throw a stone at her." As a result, one by one, the crowd dropped stones and left with bowed heads.

34. Admiration for a woman is usually centered around her current appearance; admiration for a young man often focuses on his future potential.

35. Adversity is undoubtedly a good teacher; however, the tuition this teacher charges is very high, and what the student often gains from him does not always match the tuition paid.

36. If you can't even see the suffering around you, what's the point of talking about the suffering that's far away?

37. In summary, Teacher Luo looks down on this behavior, believing it to be a typical case of falling in love with an abstract person imagined in one's own mind, while ignoring the tangible, concrete people around them.

38. If there is anyone in this world who dares to expose all of their innermost thoughts and feelings, to the extent that it seems terrifyingly honest, it is the cultural giant of French history – Rousseau!

39. Rousseau's emotions were so delicate and his personality so sensitive that Hume described him as "a person who has not only been stripped of his clothes but also of his skin." His clear self-awareness led him to view "sentimentality" as a natural gift, and in order to affirm the path unique to himself, he had to consider emotions as the highest value.

40. I am engaged in an endeavor unprecedented by any predecessor and unparalleled by any successor. My goal is to fully expose the true nature of an individual to the world, and that individual is none other than myself.

41. I never feel bored when I am alone; chatting is the one thing I can't stand all my life.

42. If a person is satisfied with just being able to live, he will live a very happy life. The less we know how to endure, the more we feel pain.

43. The inevitable consequence of luxury is the disintegration of morals, which in turn leads to the corruption of taste.

44. However, people have grown accustomed to a life of dependence, comfort, and ease, and they no longer have the ability to break the chains weighing them down. To maintain their peace, they would rather bear heavier chains upon themselves.

45. I always think that the hearts of great artists are sincere and transparent, capable of connecting with the hearts of ordinary people. Although I am not an artist, I possess a very artistic soul. Reading the works of great writers, I feel that my soul resonates harmoniously with that of the authors. What is time? It can never truly separate the heart-to-heart communication that passes through books. Two hundred years have passed since the time of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and after just finishing his "Confessions," my heart still hasn't fully emerged from the depths of his soul. As I walk alone on the noisy streets, I reflect on Rousseau,感知ing his essence.

46. I haven't finished reading this book yet, and I've already felt something halfway through. I'm also reflecting on myself, how many times have I deceived myself by telling myself everything is fine, only to find myself speechless when I recall it. It's time to face myself and learn to be excellent. Every time I make a mistake, I should learn to record it, and reward myself when I correct it. Years later, will I be proud of myself!

47. Ignorance is not harmful; it's only confusion that is harmful. People who are confused are often not because they don't know, but because they think they do.

48. The great question of learning is to find a form that places law above humans, a problem that is as difficult as the problem in geometry of turning a circle into a square.

49. Leisure in social settings is detestable because it is forced; leisure in the life of solitude is delightful because it is free and voluntary.

50. What Huang Zizhong said, that we need to understand the cries from afar, means that we should be able to comprehend the sufferings that have not happened to ourselves, those sufferings that should have moved our sympathy but have been ignored.

51. I have never intended nor been willing to read a very thick book, even if the author or the protagonist is highly intriguing to me. I have bought many books, which have always been stacked on the bookshelf. For a long time, they were neglected, quietly breathing on their own, and continually covered by new dust or sunlight. However, one weekend afternoon, with nothing to do on a rainy day, I stood in front of the bookshelf again, driven by some strange thoughts. I took out some small books that I liked, among which was Rousseau's "Confessions."

52. Rousseau's "Confessions," this autobiography with a total of 550,000 words, is a declaration of an emotional person. Rousseau wishes to elucidate a fact through his review of his entire life, as he stated in the preface: "Whether a person is noble depends solely on whether their emotions are great and noble, and whether their thoughts are rich and agile." In the beginning of the first chapter, Rousseau loudly proclaims, "I know my own heart well, and I also understand others. I am inherently different from anyone I have ever seen; even I dare to believe that there is no one in the world born like me. Although I am not better than others, at least I am different." His realization of being "different" is correct.

53. If a person fears pain, fears all kinds of diseases, fears unexpected events, fears the dangers of life and death, then he cannot bear anything.

54. Rousseau, in his "Confessions," spoke of his entire life, thoughts, feelings, and all aspects of his personality and character with an honest and straightforward attitude. He boldly exposed his private secrets that he could not bear to see in public, admitting that he had had some base thoughts in certain situations and even engaged in vulgar behavior. He had told lies, deceived, flirted with women, stolen things, and even had a habit of stealing.

55. The revenge that each person takes for the humiliation they suffer is proportional to the level of respect they have for themselves, thus making revenge a terrifying act and turning people into cold and cruel beings.

56. Decoration is also at odds with virtue, because virtue is the power and vitality of the soul.

57. Rousseau began writing this autobiography when he was already in his fifties, but his memories of his childhood were still very clear. Childhood, not only was the source of Rousseau's spirit, but more importantly, it had become the Garden of Eden in his life. After the fall, what remained was a wistful glance back and an unconscious imitation of his feelings for his childhood.

58. The inevitable consequence of luxury is the disintegration of decorum, which in turn leads to the corruption of taste.

59. Imagination is most pleasingly present in the mind when circumstances are at their most unfavorable; when everything around is joyful, it loses its charm.

60. The most important thing in human life is labor training. Without labor, there can be no normal life.

61. It cannot be said that Li Dan's views are right and Huang Zizhong's views are wrong. It's just that Li Dan excels Huang Zizhong in the skills of articulating his views, his unique sense of humor, and vivid examples, which are slightly superior to Huang Zizhong's simple depth. This is a victory of skill, not of views.

62. The person who lives the most meaningful life is not necessarily the one who lives the longest, but the one who experiences life the most deeply.

63. The nouns "virtue" and "vice" are concepts that are aimed at the collective, and can only arise through frequent interaction among people.
