10. It's been a long time since we last saw each other, I'm doing well, I've just changed into a different way of existence.
11. In June 1902, I first started working at the whaling station, and I was only 16 years old at that time. Before that, I had heard tales that orcas helped whale hunters catch large whales every year. At that time, I thought it was just a story, but later on, I witnessed it multiple times with my own eyes.
12. When I arrived at the whaling station, in search of a place to stay, I heard a commotion coming from the other side of the bay. We arrived at the shore on time and saw a large animal leap out of the water forcefully on the opposite side, and then fall back into the water. It made a series of grunts and groans, and looked like a fish, but I knew it wasn't one.
13. "That's Old Tom, the orca," a whaler named George shouted to me, "It's telling us there's a whale over there, and it's calling us to hunt."
14. The other whaler shouted loudly, "Hurry up... go, go." This was the call that signaled the immediate start of the whale hunt.
15. "Clancy, hurry up, get on the boat," George said while running in front of me. I had heard before that George doesn't like to wait. So, even though I hadn't put on the right clothes yet, I started running after him.
16. Without pause, we and the other whalers jumped into the boat and set off towards the bay. I looked into the water and saw Old Tom swimming right next to the boat, guiding us. A few minutes later, Tom disappeared, and it was George who was the first to use the paddle to slap the water. Tom popped up, turned back to the boat, and led us to the hunting area again.
17. Through the process telescope, we can see that something is happening far away. Getting closer, we found out that it was a large whale that was being affected by approximately...
18. "Ah, they are working together — those orcas are rushing towards the blowhole of that whale, preventing it from breathing, while the others are blocking it from diving or escaping." George told me, pointing at the hunting scene. At that moment, the most spectacular display unfolded. The orcas chased after our fishing boat and the whale first, like a pack of rabid hounds.
19. So, the whale harpoon was readied. The little one standing at the bow aimed the harpoon at the whale and threw it, hitting the vital spot right on target. The whale was severely wounded and did not live long after that. Soon, the whale's body was swiftly dragged into the deep sea by the orcas. The whalers then turned their ship around and set sail back.
20. Jack replied, "No, we'll come back tomorrow to retrieve the whale carcass. It won't surface within 24 hours."
21. Red added with a smile, "In this time, old Tom and the other orcas will have a feast, and the whale lips and tongue are their delicacies."
22. Although old Tom and the other orcas were fierce, they have never been dangerous to humans or attacked humans. In fact, they even cherish humans. One day, when we were out whaling, James was swept off into the water.
23. George shouted loudly, "Someone is drowning! Turn the bow of the boat back!"
24. That day, the sea was turbulent with waves, making it difficult to turn the ship around. The waves carried James further and further away from us. From James's face, I could see his extreme fear, as if he was afraid of being abandoned by us. Then we saw a shark.
25. Red replied, "Don't worry, old Tom won't let it get close."
26. It took us half an hour to turn the boat around and return to the place where James had fallen into the water. As we approached him, I saw Old Tom holding James steady in the water, and I could hardly believe my eyes.
27. When we hoisted James onto the fishing boat, everyone cheered, "Old Tom, the great hunter! Thank God." Later, Old Tom, cool and composed, returned to the place of hunting and went whale hunting with the other orcas.
