The years are peaceful, and the world is bustling with prosperity. A light veil cannot hide the smile in the corner of my eye.
1. I've been exhausted all day, my body is at its limit of fatigue, but I feel very sad in my heart. At this point, lying in bed, I still have no desire to sleep!
2. My mind is in disarray, and the fatigue of my body intertwines with the irritation in my heart, truly leaving me physically and mentally exhausted. I can't find words to describe how I feel at this moment!
3. Early in the morning, my mother called me. Seeing her number on the screen, I was startled, because I knew she had been back at my grandmother's house for two days already. My grandmother is 98 years old now, and it's currently my mother, a few aunts, and my uncle taking turns taking care of her. These days happen to be when my mother is looking after my grandmother there. As expected, my mother asked me and my younger sister to go back to my grandmother's house tomorrow, because today is the 19th day of the lunar calendar. It's said that returning to visit the elderly on the 9th of any day is not good, especially for the sick elderly!
4. My mother said that my grandmother's condition has been very poor these days. This time when she went back, she couldn't even recognize her. Moreover, she has only been sleeping, and couldn't be woken up by shouting or shaking. She also doesn't eat anything; even when food is forced into her mouth, she won't swallow it. She can't take in any water either...
5. I still feel very sad in my heart, even though my grandmother is already 98 years old, and even though she is unable to take care of herself. Sometimes, I see her unable to get onto or off her bed, unable to move around, sitting is tiring, and lying down is tiring too, sighing with a heavy heart. I feel that she is suffering a lot, but I still prefer to let her live. Now, my mom says she can't eat her meals, and I feel particularly distressed in my heart...
6. A series of past events flashed before my eyes. I grew up with my grandmother, who was sold as a child bride to my grandfather's family at the age of 13. She never really enjoyed much happiness in her life. She gave birth to six children, and my grandfather passed away in his 40s. It was my grandmother who raised these six children, struggling through difficult days!
7. When I was little, since no one was watching me, my mother sent me to live with my grandmother. I stayed there until I was 10 years old before coming back. After returning, during school hours aside, the holidays were still spent at my grandmother's house, and the majority of my childhood memories are from my grandmother's place!
8. Later on, I went to college, got married, had children, and had to go back home several times a year, sometimes staying for a couple of days. It might be because I grew up there as a child, but every time my sister and I arrived in the village, a lot of people recognized us. For both of us, the neighbors near our grandmother's house were very familiar! Our familiarity with the place was even greater than with our own village!
9. Grandma was so capable when she was young. She would take me, my sister, and the two older brothers from my uncle's family to the fields to pull weeds and hoe the soil. She was both diligent and capable, very ambitious, and absolutely would not allow her crops to grow poorly and lose to others. At that time, most of the work in the village relied on manual labor, and mechanization had not yet been achieved. Grandma would take us to do the field work, and then we would have to rush home to light the fire and cook. She worked hard and tirelessly, never complaining!
10. Can she not be tired? Saying she's not tired is a lie. Her back is already straightening up early, and there's a big pot on her back. What's not tiring about that?
11. I always felt that my grandmother would never grow old. Just a few years ago, she used to steam buns every day to feed a whole family, and now she is a great-grandmother with five generations in the family!
12. Used to think that days were long and time was slow; now I know what it means for time to slip away and for years to pass swiftly.
13. Life, by nature, is like a book that one hasn't had time to read, and the most urgent moments are those beautiful times; not all past experiences can settle into beautiful stories, and there are always some memories that one wants to erase but just can't.
