Kuang Heng, known by the character Zhiqui, was from Donghai in the Western Han Dynasty (a county name, located east of Pizhou County in present-day Jiangsu Province, extending to the eastern part of Ziyang County in Shandong Province). He came from a farming family, with both his grandfather and father being farmers for generations. However, Kuang Heng developed a passion for reading. When he was young, his family was very poor, and he had to work as a hired laborer during the day to make a living, leaving him little time to read. Yet, the poverty was so severe that they couldn't even afford to light candles. The neighbors had bright candles, but their light couldn't reach his house. Kuang Heng came up with a clever idea: he drilled a hole through the wall next to his house, "stealing" a bit of light so that the neighbor's candlelight could shine through. He would then hold his books in front of the hole, reading by the light that came through.
