9. In the process of reading, one should read book by book. Do not switch between books without finishing one, as flipping through various books aimlessly is due to being influenced by external factors. Moreover, scholars also emphasize cultivating one's qi, which means maintaining a peaceful and calm mind, having nothing untoward to say to others, and keeping one's qi stored in the dan tian (the lower part of the abdomen), being open and straightforward. They also advocate for preserving one's health, which includes temperance in desires, moderation in work, and restraint in diet. Excessive desires can only bring烦恼 (trouble), and overexertion can lead to physical and mental exhaustion, causing one to lose all hope. Thirdly, one should be cautious in speech. 19. Since ancient times, the officialdom has been treacherous, accompanying a ruler is like accompanying a tiger. Most officials merely seek to curry favor and take advantage of opportunities, and those who are honest and upright are as rare as phoenix feathers. However, Zeng Guofan dared to rectify the ills of the times at the time of the new ruler's ascension, spoke candidly and gave advice, placing personal gains and losses, blessings and misfortunes out of consideration, forgetting personal interests for the public good, and forgetting the family for the country. 40.
40. The ancients once said, "The beginning of one's troubles in life is when one learns to read and write, and the initial recollection of one's name can bring peace." This means that once a person begins to read and write, the troubles and hardships of their entire life begin. Zeng Guofan believed that there are two types of worries: the worries of the gentleman and the worries of the common man. The gentleman has a broad胸怀 that encompasses all things and all people, with the ability to introspect internally and support the ruler externally. Only then can one's parents not regard their child's upbringing as a shame, and only then can one truly be worthy of being a person under heaven. Therefore, the gentleman worries about not being as virtuous as Yu the Great or as wise as the Duke of Zhou, about not making progress in their moral cultivation or studies, about the common people's stubbornness, the cunning of the border people, and about the presence of the unrighteous in power and the absence of the righteous. Of course, these are the worries of superior individuals, and a compassionate and sorrowful attitude towards the world. The common man worries about their own daily trivial concerns for food and clothing, the honor and dishonor of the world, and the value of their reputation. In Zeng Guofan's view, the worries of the common man are not worth worrying about. Upon careful reflection, this is indeed the case. In a person's life, one day is just three meals, and a lifetime is no more than seven feet in height. "Even if one has a thousand years of iron gates, in the end, it all returns to a heap of earth." Why worry about trivial fame or the tiny profits of a tiny corner, or be troubled by them?

48. Knowledge requires the greatest tension and the greatest enthusiasm from people. — Pavlov
49. Suddenly, I remembered something. On that day, I visited my uncle and aunt's house, only to find that the classic Chinese literature that my uncle once loved, such as "The Family Letters of Zeng Guofan," "The Treatise on the Cultivation of the Will," and "The Great Learning," which carry the excellent traditional Chinese culture and national classics, were all piled up and neglected on a shelf. I was puzzled and asked my uncle about it, but he replied, "I'm busy with work, and my nephew doesn't like to read them." Looking at the stack of educational textbooks on my nephew's desk and the laptop on my uncle's desk, I also remembered the scene when my uncle used to come to my house to tell me about national classics as bedtime stories. In an instant, I felt a sense of loss for the study of Chinese national classics. The national classics should be the carrier of Chinese traditional culture. In these classics, I deeply felt the gentleness and softness of Chinese culture, which is different from the modern fast-food reading culture and foreign culture. The classics are not accepted by the younger generation, and they are gradually forgotten behind the busy people. All these reflect a signal: Chinese traditional culture is facing an embarrassing situation of marginalization. I read "The Family Letters of Zeng Guofan," where Mr. Zeng encourages his brothers to read more classics for self-cultivation. I think this is indeed the case, and I admire Mr. Zeng's daily practice of writing letters and reading history, even when he is busy. He truly sets an example of inheriting Chinese culture through personal practice.

53. Zeng Guofan believed that for scholars to study, the first requirement is to have ambition. Those with ambition will not be content to be of the lower strata; the second requirement is to have insight. With insight, one knows that knowledge is limitless and does not dare to be satisfied with what one has gained, just like the river god looking at the sea or the frog peering at the sky, all of whom are lacking in insight. "Life is finite, but knowledge is infinite" – this is the very essence of the matter; the third requirement is perseverance. With perseverance, there is no task that cannot be accomplished.

59. Since the Ming and Qing dynasties, the system of the imperial examination for selecting officials has become increasingly corrupt and deplorable, suppressing talents, wasting youth, and causing immense harm. Zeng Guofan's participation in the imperial examination went relatively smoothly, but he clearly realized that "many people have been misled by this throughout their lives." His expectations for his younger brothers were not about whether they would obtain the title of scholar-official or not, but rather that filial piety and fraternal respect should be a good omen, that literary works should be timeless, and that true talent and knowledge should be sought after, not just the empty reputation of passing the imperial examination. These profound insights reflect his style of thinking and working that emphasizes grandeur, long-term vision, and practicality.
60. The rise and fall of all things are predetermined. In the correspondence between Zeng Guofan and his family, there was an incident: Zeng Guofan sent 1,000 taels of silver to his family, instructing them to use 600 taels for household expenses and to pay off debts, and 400 taels for gifts to relatives and friends. The Zeng family was not wealthy. As the eldest son, Zeng Guofan had to pay for all the family's expenses and the tuition fees for his younger brothers to study. Zeng Guofan himself often had to borrow money to make ends meet. But in such a situation, why did Zeng Guofan still manage to squeeze out money to help his relatives? The reason, as he himself put it, was that he believed his family's fortune was too prosperous and that it was necessary to be particularly cautious, to follow the path of maintaining prosperity and stability.
