32. The first two lines of the third poem "Returning Home" depict the innocence and cuteness of a child, which is used to contrast the serious contemplation of the latter two lines of the poem. The latter two lines are actually the poet's self-questions, reflecting on his own ups and downs in the official world, struggling for a living and for fame and fortune, and realizing that he has gradually aged, with his temples gradually graying. The poet expresses a faint sense of melancholy for the sun setting in the west. The word "win" further portrays the poet's serene yet slightly bitter smile. This five-character poem describes a poignant fact, that the road to success in officialdom is fraught with danger, leading to a prematurely white head. However, the poem does not directly describe the event, but expresses the poet's sorrowful mood in the form of a child's questioning - the child tugging at my clothes asks, why do you return so late? Who are you fighting with out there for the years, winning two temples of white hair? The child's innocent curiosity contrasts sharply with the poet's inner sadness. The questioning is both peculiar and pointed, to the point where the person being asked is at a loss for words, even feeling embarrassed. Behind the questioning lies the poet's profound sadness and bitterness.
