In the long river of time, each sentence of Buddhist wisdom and Zen thought is like the morning bell and evening drum, awakening the slumbering soul. On this tranquil afternoon, we turn the pages of a chapter about "Buddhist wisdom and Zen thought in everyday life," exploring those who, even on their sick beds, at the edge of life and death, still maintain a peaceful Zen heart. They, with their lives, interpret what true cultivation is, and what is the wisdom that transcends suffering. Let us walk into this story full of Zen, and feel the enlightenment brought to us by Buddhist wisdom and Zen thought.
1. The friendship between gentlemen is as pure as water.
2. The bodhisattva fears the cause, while the ordinary person fears the result.
3. The Taoist is not like an ordinary good person; he stands out like a crane among chickens, upright and self-assured, not conforming to human sentiment, transcending the ordinary and the mundane.
4. Do not be elated by possessions, do not be saddened by oneself.
5. Those who are good at making use of time always find it a good opportunity to practice Zen meditation.
6. The past can only be used for reminiscing, don't get lost in its shadows, or you will never be able to see the path ahead clearly; don't expect everyone to understand you, and you don't need to understand everyone either. The coming together and parting apart are the laws of life, and there is no need to be concerned or sorrowful about them. Looking up requires confidence, while bending over requires courage. Each person's living space is limited; if you keep your head high all the time, you are bound to get your head broken. The ability to bend down at the right time is true wisdom in life.
7. What is the difference between the Buddha and ordinary people? The difference lies in the ability to protect one's own thoughts and intentions.
8. Suffering and gain come with their respective causes and conditions.
9. Engage in what is real when you are involved, perceive what is real when you see, use what is real when you employ, and prove what is real when you verify. If there is the slightest bit of unreality, it falls into emptiness.
10. It took 500 lifetimes of glances in the past to be able to exchange just one fleeting encounter in this life.
11. On this grand stage of life, each person plays different roles of joy, anger, sadness, and sorrow due to the varying karma from their past lives. But no matter how skillfully or importantly you perform, there will come a time when you must take your curtain call. So, life itself is a play; why be unable to bear a loss or see through it when it's all over?
12. Because of arising from the mind of attachment, there is the attachment to differentiating and being stubborn, which leads to dust of desires, turmoil, and trouble. If one has a strong and vigorous root, body, and mind, and directly cultivates to the point where no thought arises, that is the original face.
13. The Buddha said: Year after year, how many things have you seen through? Day after day, how many things have you let go of? By all means, how much have you gained? Through careful calculation, how much have you lost? How much worry have you experienced in seeking but not obtaining? How much enmity have you accumulated through meticulous calculations? How much evil have you created due to unquenchable greed? How much have you enjoyed in life? At the time of your final moment, how much will you take away with you? A generous heart can contain what is difficult to tolerate in the world, and a smile with words can mock the ridiculous people in the world.
14. The nature of bodhi is inherent, purity of nature is bodhi, neither can be cultivated, nor can it be shaped.
15. Those who cultivate the bodhicitta are not for their own benefit, but rather to be the refuge for all sentient beings suffering greatly throughout the ten directions and the entire Dharma realm.
16. If one can recognize one's own true mind and continually refine it through each thought, then there is no need to stop; one will naturally see the Buddha nature.
17. If one's heart is moved, then one's actions become impulsive, harming their body and causing pain to their bones, and thus they come to understand the various sufferings of the world.
18. Just when one is careful, one is actually careless; when one is not careful, one is actually being careful; when one is being careful, it is actually without intention; and when one is without intention, it is actually being careful.
19. Being with cheerful people, the corners of your mouth often carry a smile; being with ambitious people, your actions will not lag behind; being with generous people, you will not be stingy in dealing with things; being with wise people, you will not be confused when faced with difficulties; being with clever people, your actions will become more agile. Borrow others' wisdom to perfect yourself. Learn from the best others, and be the best version of yourself!
20. Be sincerely in tune with things, without generating any distinctions.
21. Engaging in the practice does not evoke ordinary emotions nor does it arise with any sanctimonious understanding. It is said that when the practice begins, understanding should be extinguished, not allowing any knowledge or realization to linger in the mind.
22. Take things as they come, often content.
23. Life is short and all things are impermanent. Why should we care so much about everything, and even more so, why should we be so meticulous in every detail? In a lifetime, which is just over a hundred years, there's no need to be overly demanding or have excessive expectations. Just do what you want to do, love who you want to love, strive to live each day well, leisurely watch the flowers bloom and fall in the courtyard, and look afar as the clouds roll in and out. The more you demand, the more烦恼 you'll have; the more expectations you have, the greater the suffering will be.
24. Seeking outwardly without knowing how to gather one's mind, reflect inwardly, and turn one's light back within, such a way of studying Buddhism is particularly difficult to achieve its real benefits.
25. If one has the deluded intention of practicing diligently, it is false diligence; if one can maintain a mind that is not deluded, there is no limit to diligence.
26. Buddhism has no many offspring, long-term determination is hard to find, studying the path as with a beginner's mind, becoming a Buddha is still sufficient, it remains unchanged from beginning to end, truly a great man.
27. More indifference, less vanity.
28.6 Buddha said, many things in life are things that can be encountered but not sought after. Things that are sought after with all one's effort cannot be obtained, and what is not anticipated often arrives unexpectedly. One should possess a peaceful mind, without resentment, without haste, without pushing too hard, without pessimism, without confusion, without losing one's composure, not being joyful because of external things, not being sad because of oneself, letting everything be as it is by fate, and following the natural course.

33. Do not expect everyone to be friendly to you, nor should you expect life to be fair to you. No one's life is smooth sailing; pick up the pleasant moments and put down the unpleasant ones, and then live well.
34. In life, there are wins and losses. When in a favorable position or in a prosperous situation, do not become overconfident and indulge in excesses; when in a disadvantageous position or facing adversity, do not become despondent or give up on yourself. Define your successful life yourself; create your happy life yourself!
