1. In our country, ancient people carried out research on halos around the sun and the moon as early as a long time ago. There is an old saying: "A solar halo at midnight indicates rain, and a lunar halo at noon indicates wind." This means that if a solar halo appears, there will be rain at midnight; if a lunar halo appears, it will be windy the next noon. From a modern meteorological perspective, the appearance of a solar halo indicates an increase in water vapor in the atmosphere and the approach of low pressure, which is known as the midnight rain, meaning that rain may fall in the next few days.
2. The halo is an optical phenomenon in nature. It is formed by a colorful ring of light, with the colors arranged from violet to red, when the light of the sun or the moon passes through high and thin clouds (cirrus, cirrostratus, or cirrocumulus) and is refracted by ice crystals. The halo that appears around the sun is called a solar halo, and the halo that appears around the moon is called a lunar halo.
3. The sun halo brings rain at the third watch, the moon halo brings wind at noon. This is a proverb, meaning: When there is a halo around the sun, it will rain at the third watch (midnight), and when there is a halo around the moon, it will blow wind at noon (11-1 PM) the next day.
4. The halo, also known as the circular rainbow, is an atmospheric optical phenomenon formed when sunlight passes through lenticular clouds and is refracted or reflected by ice crystals. When light enters the ice crystals within the lenticular clouds, it is refracted twice and dispersed into various colors of light in different directions. When there are lenticular clouds, countless ice crystals float in the sky. The ice crystals on the same circle around the sun can refract the same color of light into the eyes of people, forming an inner red, outer purple halo (although this is not actually the case). When there are lenticular clouds composed of ice crystals in the sky, often there will be one or more colorful halos centered around the sun, with inner red, outer purple colors. Sometimes, many colored or white light points and light arcs may also appear. These halos, light points, and light arcs are collectively referred to as ice halos.
